[Does Alzheimer's disease exist in all primates? Alzheimer pathology in non-human primates and its pathophysiological implications (I)].

INTRODUCTION: Many publications consider that Alzheimer's disease (AD) is exclusive to the human species, and that no other animal species suffers from the disease. However, various studies have shown that some species can present with some of the defining characteristics of the human disease, including both neuropathological changes and cognitive-behavioural symptoms. DEVELOPMENT: In this work, the results published (PubMed) on senile brain changes in non-human primates of different degrees of evolution, are reviewed. The neuropathological changes associated with the accumulation of amyloid

Cerebellar Molecular Signatures in Non-Human Primates.

Cerebellar molecular signatures in primates remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the immunoreactivity of neuroplasticity-related molecular markers, including aldolase C (Aldoc), phospholipase C beta 3 (PLCB3), and phospholipase C beta 4 (PLCB4) in the cerebellar cortex and associated nuclei of rhesus macaque monkeys (Macaca mulatta). Our main findings are as follows: First, the cerebellar vermis in macaques exhibited striped compartmentalization for all markers, with the striped expression boundary of PLCB3 being less distinct than those of Aldoc and PLCB4. Second, the striped patt

The evolution of parietal cortex in primates.

Many of the adaptive changes in the functional organization of parietal cortex of humans emerged in past in the early primates as they depended on visually guided forelimb use to grasp branches and food. Currently, human, apes and some monkeys have four well-defined subdivisions of anterior parietal cortex, areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2 of Brodmann. In some of the smaller monkeys, and in stepsirrine primates (galagos, lemurs, and lorises), especially areas 1 and 2 are less developed, and the existence of an area 2 is questionable. In galagos, area 3b, the homologue of S1 in other mammals, has a more p

African Non-Human Primates Host Diverse Enteroviruses.

Enteroviruses (EVs) belong to the family Picornaviridae and are responsible for mild to severe diseases in mammals including humans and non-human primates (NHP). Simian EVs were first discovered in the 1950s in the Old World Monkeys and recently in wild chimpanzee, gorilla and mandrill in Cameroon. In the present study, we screened by PCR EVs in 600 fecal samples of wild apes and monkeys that were collected at four sites in Gabon. A total of 32 samples were positive for EVs (25 from mandrills, 7 from chimpanzees, none from gorillas). The phylogenetic analysis of VP1 and VP2 genes showed that E

Social inequalities in health in nonhuman primates.

Overall health has been linked to socioeconomic status, with the gap between social strata increasing each year. Studying the impact of social position on health and biological functioning in nonhuman primates has allowed researchers to model the human condition while avoiding ethical complexities or other difficulties characteristic of human studies. Using female cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis), our lab has examined the link between social status and stress for 30 years. Female nonhuman primates are especially sensitive to social stressors which can deleteriously affect reproductive

BSE-associated prion-amyloid cardiomyopathy in primates.

Prion amyloidosis occurred in the heart of 1 of 3 macaques intraperitoneally inoculated with bovine spongiform encephalopathy prions. This macaque had a remarkably long duration of disease and signs of cardiac distress. Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, caused by transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans, may manifest with cardiac symptoms from prion-amyloid cardiomyopathy.

Visuomotor cerebellum in human and nonhuman primates.

In this paper, we will review the anatomical components of the visuomotor cerebellum in human and, where possible, in non-human primates and discuss their function in relation to those of extracerebellar visuomotor regions with which they are connected. The floccular lobe, the dorsal paraflocculus, the oculomotor vermis, the uvula-nodulus, and the ansiform lobule are more or less independent components of the visuomotor cerebellum that are involved in different corticocerebellar and/or brain stem olivocerebellar loops. The floccular lobe and the oculomotor vermis share different mossy fiber in

Age-related endocrine dysfunction in nonhuman primates.

Peculiarities of functioning of some parts of the endocrine system (the pineal gland, pancreatic gland, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis) in an aging nonhuman primate model (Papio hamadryas and Macaca mulatta) are described in this article. It has been established that basal activity of some endocrine functions (glucocorticoid, corticotropic, pancreatic, male estradiol producing) varies little with age. Other functions significantly decrease (DHEA/DHEAS-producing, pineal, testicular) or increase (male gonadotropic) with age. In contrast with basal

Exposure to nonhuman primates in rural Cameroon.

Exposure to nonhuman primates has led to the emergence of important diseases, including Ebola hemorrhagic fever, AIDS, and adult T-cell leukemia. To determine the extent of exposure to nonhuman primates, persons were examined in 17 remote villages in Cameroon that represented three habitats (savanna, gallery forest, and lowland forest). Questionnaire data were collected to assess whether persons kept wild animal pets; hunted and butchered wild game; had experienced bites, scratches, or injuries from live animals; or had been injured during hunting or butchering. While all villages had substant

Different modes of Mhc evolution in primates.

The human major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) is a chromosomal segment approximately 4 million bp long that contains > or = 84 genes. Some of these genes code for the class I and class II molecules, while the remaining genes code for complement components, cytochrome P450, tumor necrosis factor, and many other, unrelated proteins. We demonstrate on three examples (DP, C4-CYP21, and DRB) that different regions of the Mhc have different evolutionary histories. The organization of the DP region, which in humans contains four genes, was established in the ancestral Anthropoidea or earlier and h

[Postnatal development of visual functions in primates].

The author presents the results of experimental investigations performed in apes in which he evaluated the development of the visual system. Immediately after the birth the animal's lids were stitched together, first in one eye than in the second one; at the same time the first one was opened. Electrodes were then introduced surgically to the region of the lateral geniculate bodies and to the brain cortex. The function of the visual pathways and of the visual cortex were evaluated by using differential visual stimuli. Greatest changes were seen by the author in the visual cortex. He feels that

Hypotension produced by vagal block in primates.

In many species, the vagus has been reported to contain afferents that inhibit sympathetic tone. Vagal block (VB) increases blood pressure in both the intact and sinoaortic-denervated (SAD) dog. In the present study, VB was produced in intact and SAD monkeys by infiltrating the vagi with a local anesthetic. This was done in conjunction with blood volume expansion or head-out water immersion. The cardiovascular parameters monitored were heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP), and left atrial pressure (LAP). VB decreased BP (-13 +/- 2.8 mmHg) in the control group and the SAD animals (-47 +/- 6.7 m

Chemical and physical restraint of nonhuman primates.

Numerous publications on primate restraint and anesthesiology have appeared in recent years. This reflects the striking growth of interest in medical primatology and of efforts to improve restraint agents and methods to facilitate humane use of primates in research. For access to earlier literature, readers should consult recent textbooks [12; 29, pp. 469--474], reviews on chemical or physical restraint [3, 4, 16, 27, 30, 37], and other valuable publications on these subjects that have appeared since 1965 [1, 20, 23, 36, 40, 42]. In this brief review we consider publications, principally since

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis: experimental infection in primates.

Measles virus isolated from the brain of a 12-year-old boy with subacute sclerosing panencephalitis caused a chronic, progressive encephalitis in experimentally infected rhesus monkeys. The infection was eventually fatal in spite of pre-existing measles immunity and a vigorous secondary antibody response in serum and cerebrospinal fluid of the infected animals. The findings provide a basis for studies into the pathogenesis and possible treatment of the human disease.

Dental eruption patterns in Parapithecidae (Primates, Anthropoidea).

Radiographic analysis of mandibular fragments of the Oligocene primates Apidium phiomense and Parapithecus grangeri provides sequences of postincisor development and eruption. Although retaining the premolar eruption sequence (P2 leads to P4 leads to P3), the parapithecids possessed the derived feature of delayed canine appearance which, with other characters of cranial and postcranial morphology, aligns them with Anthropoidea and not Prosimii or platyrrhines.

Transmission of human leukaemia to nonhuman primates.

The experiments described show that inoculation of two monkey species, M. arctoides and P. hamadryas, with human leukaemic blood or its filtrates causes a viral disease with the characteristics of malignant lymphoma of mixed type. The disease was passed in subsequent passages. The virus was isolated and identified as an oncornavirus of C-type by its characteristic morphological appearance and buoyant density (1.16 g/cm3 in sucrose and 1.21 g/cm3 in caesium chloride), and by the presence of 60-70S RNA and RNA-dependent DNA polymerase. There is some evidence that it differs immunologically from

Smallpox and monkeypox in non-human primates.

In considering global eradication of smallpox the absence of an animal reservoir is important. Present knowledge of experimental infection of non-human primates with variola virus and of a related virus infection in monkeys, termed monkeypox, is examined. From the literature review and the results of a survey of captive monkeys in 26 major biological institutions it is concluded that outbreaks of supposed smallpox and monkeypox are not frequent and that man may be comparatively insusceptible to monkeypox. A natural reservoir of smallpox in non-human primates is thought to be unlikely although f
