Unified Principal Component Analysis for Sparse and Dense Functional Data under Spatial Dependency.

We consider spatially dependent functional data collected under a geostatistics setting, where locations are sampled from a spatial point process. The functional response is the sum of a spatially dependent functional effect and a spatially independent functional nugget effect. Observations on each function are made on discrete time points and contaminated with measurement errors. Under the assumption of spatial stationarity and isotropy, we propose a tensor product spline estimator for the spatio-temporal covariance function. When a coregionalization covariance structure is further assumed, w

Aberration-free digital holographic phase imaging using the derivative-based principal component analysis.

SIGNIFICANCE: Digital holographic microscopy is widely used to get the quantitative phase information of transparent cells. AIM: However, the sample phase is superimposed with aberrations. To quantify the phase information, aberrations need to be fully compensated. APPROACH: We propose a technique to obtain aberration-free phase imaging, using the derivative-based principal component analysis (dPCA). RESULTS: With dPCA, almost all aberrations can be extracted and compensated without requirements on background segmentation, making it efficient and convenient. CONCLUSIONS: It solves the prob

Principal component analysis of coronaviruses reveals their diversity and seasonal and pandemic potential.

Coronaviruses and influenza viruses have similarities and differences. In order to comprehensively compare them, their genome sequencing data were examined by principal component analysis. Coronaviruses had fewer variations than a subclass of influenza viruses. In addition, differences among coronaviruses that infect a variety of hosts were also small. These characteristics may have facilitated the infection of different hosts. Although many of the coronaviruses were conservative, those repeatedly found among humans showed annual changes. If SARS-CoV-2 changes its genome like the Influenza H t

Assessing prescription drug abuse using functional principal component analysis (FPCA) of wastewater data.

BACKGROUND: Wastewater-based epidemiology is an alternative method for estimating the collective drug use in a community. We applied functional data analysis, a statistical framework developed for analysing curve data, to investigate weekly temporal patterns in wastewater measurements of three prescription drugs with known abuse potential: methadone, oxazepam and methylphenidate, comparing them to positive and negative control drugs. METHODS: Sewage samples were collected in February 2014 from a wastewater treatment plant in Oslo, Norway. The weekly pattern of each drug was extracted by fitti

Principal component analysis of gait kinematics data in acute and chronic stroke patients.

We present the joint angles analysis by means of the principal component analysis (PCA). The data from twenty-seven acute and chronic hemiplegic patients were used and compared with data from five healthy subjects. The data were collected during walking along a 10-meter long path. The PCA was applied on a data set consisting of hip, knee, and ankle joint angles of the paretic and the nonparetic leg. The results point to significant differences in joint synergies between the acute and chronic hemiplegic patients that are not revealed when applying typical methods for gait assessment (clinical s

Application of principal component analysis to study topography of hypoxic-ischemic brain injury.

The regions at risk of ischemia following cardio-respiratory arrest have not been systematically analysed. This knowledge may be of use in determining the mechanism of ischemic injury at vulnerable sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the use of principal component analysis to analyse the covariance patterns of hypoxic ischemic injury. The inclusion criteria were: age ≥ 17 years, cardio-respiratory arrest and coma on admission (2003-2011). Regions of ischemic injury were manually segmented on fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and diffusion weighted (DWI) sequences and linearly

Principal Components Analysis of Brain Metabolism Predicts Development of Alzheimer Dementia.

The value of 18F-FDG PET for predicting conversion from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer dementia (AD) is currently under debate. We used a principal components analysis (PCA) to identify a metabolic AD conversion-related pattern (ADCRP) and investigated the prognostic value of the resulting pattern expression score (PES). Methods:18F-FDG PET scans of 544 MCI patients were obtained from the Alzheimer Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database and analyzed. We implemented voxel-based PCA and standard Statistical Parametric Mapping analysis (as a reference) to disclose cerebral metabol

Principal component analysis-based three-dimensional quantitative characterization of cracks on perforated embryo eggs.

During vaccine production using the chicken embryo cultivation method, viruses such as influenza need to be inoculated into 10-day-old chicken embryos for cultivation. Prior to virus injection, perforation on the eggshell may induce cracks, leading to potential cultivation failure. This necessitates identifying and removing unqualified cracked perforated embryo eggs. Traditional two-dimensional methods for egg eligibility judgment, limited by precision and analytical dimensionality, only consider crack presence while ignoring crack acceptability, resulting in erroneous rejection or missing det

Characterizing Auditory Deficits in Veterans With Traumatic Brain Injury: A Principal Component Analysis Approach.

PURPOSE: There is currently no consensus regarding an evidence-based assessment protocol for normal-hearing patients with a history of brain injury who report auditory difficulties. This work used a large test battery to identify measures that explained the most variability across participants with and without a history of head injury, to determine relationships between measures, and to explore patterns of performance across participants, with the aim of identifying measures that should be considered in future research on developing clinical assessment protocols for this unique patient populat

Evaluation of stretch reflex synergies in the upper limb using principal component analysis (PCA).

The dynamic nature of movement and muscle activation emphasizes the importance of a sound experimental design. To ensure that an experiment determines what we intend, the design must be carefully evaluated. Before analyzing data, it is imperative to limit the number of outliers, biases, and skewness. In the present study, a simple center-out experiment was performed by 16 healthy volunteers. The experiment included three load conditions, two preparatory delays, two perturbations, and four targets placed along a diagonal path on a 2D plane. While the participants performed the tasks, the activi

Evaluating principal component analysis models for representing anatomical changes in head and neck radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Anatomical changes during radiotherapy pose a challenge to robustness of plans. Principal component analysis (PCA) is commonly used to model such changes. We propose a toolbox to evaluate how closely a given PCA model can represent actual deformations seen in the patient and highlight regions where the model struggles to capture these changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We propose to calculate a residual error map from the difference between an actual displacement vector field (DVF) and the closest DVF that the PCA model can produce. This was done by taking the inner produ

Principal component analysis and brain-based predictors of emotion regulation in anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Reappraisal, an adaptive emotion regulation strategy, is associated with frontal engagement. In internalizing psychopathologies (IPs) such as anxiety and depression frontal activity is atypically reduced suggesting impaired regulation capacity. Yet, successful reappraisal is often demonstrated at the behavioral level. A data-driven approach was used to clarify brain and behavioral relationships in IPs. METHODS: During functional magnetic resonance imaging, anxious [general anxiety disorder (n = 43), social anxiety disorder (n = 72)] and depressed (n = 47) patients reappraised nega
