Development and Validation of a Hybrid Bronchoscopy Trainer Using Three-Dimensional Printing.

INTRODUCTION: Simulation is an essential component of medical education. Commercially available intubation simulators often lack anatomical fidelity of the lower airway and are therefore not suitable for teaching bronchoscopy or lung isolation. By using a desktop 3-dimensional (3D) printer, we aimed to create and validate a hybrid simulator from an existing mannequin with a 3D-printed lower airway that has anatomical fidelity and is financially affordable compared with commercially available models. METHODS: Using an anonymized computed tomography scan of an adult male patient, we developed a

Effect of sterilization processes on alginate/gelatin inks for three-dimensional printing.

309Sterilization is a crucial step in the process of developing bioinks for tissue engineering applications. In this work, alginate/gelatin inks were subjected to three sterilization methods: ultraviolet (UV) radiation, filtration (FILT), and autoclaving (AUTO). In addition, to simulate the sterilization effect in a real environment, inks were formulated in two different media, specifically, Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) and phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). First, rheological tests were performed to evaluate the flow properties of the inks, and we observed that UV samples showed sh

Giant Circumflex Aneurysm With Arteriovenous Fistula Surgery Guided by Three-Dimensional Printing.

A giant coronary artery aneurysm is an infrequent anomaly encountered as an incidental finding. An even more rare condition is its association with a coronary artery fistula. We report the case of a 61-year-old woman that combines two of the rarest coronary anomalies: a 70-mm giant circumflex aneurysm with an arteriovenous fistula tract draining to the superior vena cava. Considering the unique display of anatomy, the surgery was guided with 3-dimensional printing technology. Direct fistula occlusion near its outflow union, orifice source closure, aneurysmal sac exclusion, and two coronary art

Application of Three-Dimensional Printing Technology for Improved Orbital-Maxillary-Zygomatic Reconstruction.

The reconstruction of orbital-maxillary-zygomatic complex (OMZC) on patients suffering from trauma and space-occupying lesions is challenging due to the irregularity of craniomaxillofacial bones. To overcome the challenge in precise OMZC reconstruction, individual three-dimensional (3D) disease models and mirror-imaged 3D reconstruction models were printed on the basis of the computer tomography. Preoperative planning by rehearsing surgical procedures was made on the 3D disease models and the scaffolds including titanium and absorbable meshes or plates were anatomically premolded using the mir

Three-dimensional printing of large nasal septal perforations for optimal prosthetic closure.

BACKGROUND: Since 1972, patients with large nasal perforations, who were symptomatic, and who were not candidates for surgery, had the option of custom prosthetic closure at Mayo Clinic. Although septal prostheses have helped many patients, 27% of pre-1982 patients chose not to keep the prosthesis in place. Two-dimensional computed tomography (CT) sizing resulted in more of the patients choosing to retain the prosthesis. The introduction of three-dimensional (3-D) printing to the sizing process offered the potential of further improved retention by refinement in prosthesis fit. OBJECTIVE: To
