Persons who have the genetic mutation responsible for Huntington's disease (HD) have been shown to exhibit lower cognitive test scores years prior to manifest HD. Most studies have examined cognitive performance in presymptomatic persons by using estimated times to manifest HD based on published algorithms. We followed 19 gene-positive persons who were presymptomatic using an objective criterion (i.e., Quantified Neurological Exam score ≤ 10) at baseline for up to 21 years (median = 5 years) with periannual neuropsychological assessments until a diagnosis of manifest HD. Results showed that ou

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure has been linked to deficits in processing speed in both infancy and later in childhood. This study was designed to examine prenatal alcohol-related deficits in both processing speed and processing efficiency in four domains of cognitive function.
METHODS: Black children (n=337; age, 7.5 years), prospectively recruited to over-represent prenatal alcohol exposure at moderate-to-heavy levels, were assessed on four processing speed tasks, using a Sternberg paradigm. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to contrast overall processing speed, indicated by react

A free-vision chimeric facial emotion judgment task and a tachistoscopic face-recognition reaction time task were administered to 20 male right-handed subjects. The tachistoscopic task involved judgments of whether a poser in the centrally presented full-face photograph was the same or different poser than in a profile photograph presented in the left or right visual field (LVF, RVF). The free-vision task was that used by J. Levy, W. Heller, M. Banich, and L. Burton (1983, Brain and Cognition, 2, 404-419) and involved judging which of two chimeric faces appeared happier, in which the two chime

Deficits in functioning affect people with first-episode psychosis. Deficits in cognitive performance are common in such individuals and appear to be related to functioning. The present study examined the relationship between the domains of cognitive performance and personal and social functioning, as well as evaluating which cognitive domains are the most closely related to personal and social functioning and whether they explain variations once other clinical and sociodemographic aspects are accounted for. Ninety-four people with first-episode psychosis participated in the study; they were a

A visual attention span (VAS) deficit has been widely reported in the Developmental Dyslexia (DD) literature, however, consensus regarding what underlies this problem and the nature of its relationship with reading ability remains elusive. Thirty-two children with DD (15 females) were compared with 23 age matched (12 females) and 17 reading matched controls (9 females) on the combined Theory of Visual Attention (CombiTVA) paradigm with traditional letter and novel symbol conditions. The DD group performed more slowly than the age matched controls in terms of processing speed, but similarly to

Diffuse gliomas frequently lead to cognitive deficits, including slowed language processing speed at both the lexical and sentence level. Although sentence-level slowing appears to exert the critical influence on linguistic function in this population, the mechanisms underlying this slowing remain even less well characterized. The present study investigated how lesion location and inter-individual differences in brain structure relate to sentence-level language processing speed in patients with diffuse glioma. We assessed sentence-level language processing speed in 28 patients with left hemisp

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment, particularly decreased information processing speed (IPS), is a common symptom of multiple sclerosis (MS). Social cognition (SC) is also affected, but it is less studied, and the influence of personality traits on theory of mind (ToM), a key component of SC, and IPS remains unclear. Therefore, this study examined how IPS and ToM are associated with personality traits, demographic factors, and clinical factors in people with MS (PwMS).
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 PwMS attending a tertiary MS clinic in Isfahan, Iran. Demographic (age, sex,

Cerebrovascular disease is associated with an increased likelihood of developing dementia. Cerebrovascular risk factors are modifiable and may reduce the risk of later-life cognitive dysfunction, however, the relationship between cerebrovascular risk factors, brain integrity and cognition remains poorly characterised. Using a UK Biobank sample of mid-to-old aged adults, without neurological disease, our structural equation mediation models showed that poor cerebrovascular health, indicated by the presence of cerebrovascular risk factors, was associated with slowed processing speed. This effect

Since the birth of cognitive science, researchers have used reaction time and accuracy to measure cognitive ability. Although recognition of these two measures is often based on empirical observations, the underlying consensus is that most cognitive behaviors may be along two fundamental dimensions: cognitive processing speed (CPS) and cognitive processing accuracy (CPA). In this study, we used genomic-wide association studies (GWAS) data from 14 cognitive traits to show the presence of those two factors and revealed the specific neurobiological basis underlying them. We identified that CPS an

Psychomotor disturbance has been identified as a key feature of psychotic disorders, with motor signs observed in upwards of 66% of unmedicated, first-episode patients. Aberrations in the cerebellum have been directly linked to sensorimotor processing deficits including processing speed, which may underly psychomotor disturbance in psychosis, though these brain-behavior-symptom relationships are unclear, in part due to within-diagnosis heterogeneity across these levels of analysis. In 339 psychosis patients (242 schizophrenia-spectrum, 97 bipolar with psychotic features) and 217 controls, we e

OBJECTIVES: The significance of cognitive functioning deficits in schizophrenia is already well acknowledged. The relationships among lower and higher order cognitive skills and symptoms, as well as their relevance to holding a paid job are relatively less researched, though. The purpose of this study was to conduct an analysis concerning these issues.
METHODS: This study included 62 individuals with schizophrenia, 33 of them employed in paid sheltered jobs and 29 attending occupational therapy. They were assessed with tests of cognitive functions including communication skills. Psychopatholo

A controversial question in reading research is whether dyslexia is associated with impairments in the magnocellular system and, if so, how these low-level visual impairments might affect reading acquisition. This study used a novel chromatic flicker perception task to specifically explore temporal aspects of magnocellular functioning in 40 children with dyslexia and 42 age-matched controls (aged 7-11). The relationship between magnocellular temporal resolution and higher-level aspects of visual temporal processing including inspection time, single and dual-target (attentional blink) RSVP perf

Information processing speed (IPS) is a core cognitive deficit in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Previous efforts have associated IPS performance to frontal regions, but were constrained by limited temporal resolution. In this work, we employed a data-driven method, the time delay embedded-hidden Markov model (TDE-HMM), to identify task-specific states that are spectrally defined with distinct temporal and spatial profiles. We used magnetoencephalographic (MEG) data recorded while healthy controls and PwMS performed a cognitive task designed to capture IPS, the Symbol Digit Modalities

The underlying mechanisms for neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis are complex and incompletely understood. Multivariate and multimodal investigations integrating demographic, clinical, multi-omics, and neuroimaging data provide opportunities for nuanced analyses, aimed to define disease progression markers. We used data from a 12-year longitudinal multicenter cohort of 88 people with multiple sclerosis, to test the predictive value of multi-omics, T1-weighted MRI (lesion count and volume, lesion-filled brain-predicted age), clinical examinations, self-reports on quality of life, demographi

Many patients after pediatric cancer suffer from long-term cognitive difficulties. This study investigates the development of cognitive and psychosocial functions between diagnosis and one year after cancer treatment and reveals insight into the association between cognitive and psychosocial development and various risk factors. This retrospective clinical record review included fifty-seven patients, aged 4-16 years, that were examined at the beginning of the cancer treatment (T1) and one year after cancer treatment (T2) to evaluate the development of working memory (WM), processing speed (PS)

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether slow processing speed is associated with risk of sport-related concussion.
DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using computerized neurocognitive assessments (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing [ImPACT]) from the Massachusetts Concussion Management Coalition. Slow processing speed was defined as 2 SD below the sample mean (n = 131) and fast processing speed as 2 SD above the sample mean (n = 259). We used a binary logistic regression model to determine the odds of sustaining a concussion with our main predictor being process

We compared the performance of dyslexic and typical readers on two perceptual tasks, the Vanderbilt Holistic Face Processing Task and the Holistic Word Processing Task. Both yield a metric of holistic processing that captures the extent to which participants automatically attend to information that is spatially nearby but irrelevant to the task at hand. Our results show, for the first time, that holistic processing of faces is comparable in dyslexic and typical readers but that dyslexic readers show greater holistic processing of words. Remarkably, we show that these metrics predict the perfor

Hyperprolactinaemia, a common side effect of some antipsychotic drugs, is also present in drug-naïve psychotic patients and subjects at risk for psychosis. Recent studies in non-psychiatric populations suggest that increased prolactin may have negative effects on cognition. The aim of our study was to explore whether high plasma prolactin levels are associated with poorer cognitive functioning in subjects with early psychoses. We studied 107 participants: 29 healthy subjects and 78 subjects with an early psychosis (55 psychotic disorders with <3 years of illness, 23 high-risk subjects). Cognit
