BACKGROUND: Non-motor symptoms are recognized to enable the early detection of Parkinson's disease (PD). It remains unknown when those symptoms appear in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB).
METHOD: We investigated the prevalence of 15 non-motor symptoms of PD at the onset of memory loss based on a standardized worksheet in 34 patients with DLB, 32 patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 30 normal controls.
RESULTS: DLB patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of olfactory dysfunction, constipation, increased saliva and signs of rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder at the on

Prospectively collected data on 19 recently hospitalized patients with bipolar disorder were examined for prodromal changes preceding relapse. The 4-month periods before six manic and six depressive relapses were compared with each other and with a comparable period for seven patients who did not relapse. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale was used to assess symptoms. Significant elevations in unusual thought content were found 1 month before manic relapse. Depressive relapsers evidenced higher levels of conceptual disorganization throughout the prerelapse period. Nonrelapsers showed very stab

Functional movement disorder (FMD) is a common manifestation of functional neurological disorder. FMD can occur alongside other neurological conditions, but especially in patients with established Parkinson's disease (PD). An interesting observation emerging across cohort studies and case series is that FMD can precede the diagnosis of PD, suggesting that FMD may itself be a prodromal symptom of neurodegeneration. Such a notion would have significant clinical implications for the assessment and management of people with FMD, particularly with respect to decisions around the use of auxiliary in

Negative symptoms such as anhedonia are associated with psychosis risk and poorer outcomes. The Prodromal Questionnaire (PQ) is a self-report questionnaire used to screen for psychosis spectrum symptoms. However, the convergent and divergent validity and underlying factor structure of the PQ-negative symptom subscale (PQ-N) have yet to be examined. Undergraduates (N = 1,556) completed the PQ, Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale, and measures assessing anxiety, depression, and motivation. An exploratory factor analysis conducted on the PQ-N yielded a two-factor solution, reflecting subdimensi

OBJECTIVE: Depression is associated with more severe cognitive deficits in many neurological disorders, though the investigation of this relationship in Huntington disease (HD) has been limited. This study examined the relationship between depressive symptom severity and measures of executive functioning, learning/memory, and attention in prodromal HD.
METHOD: Participants (814 prodromal HD, 230 gene-negative) completed a neuropsychological test battery and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II). Based on the BDI-II, there were 637 participants with minimal depression, 89 with mild depress

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by dream enactment. The International RBD Study Group developed the RBD Symptom Severity Scale (RBDSSS) to assess symptom severity for clinical or research use. We assessed the psychometric and clinimetric properties of the RBDSSS in participants enrolled in the North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium for RBD.
METHODS: NAPS participants, who have polysomnogram-confirmed RBD, and their bedpartners completed the RBDSSS (participant and bedpartner versions). The RBDSSS contains 8 questio

The clinical high-risk period before a first episode of psychosis (CHR-P) has been widely studied with the goal of understanding the development of psychosis; however, less attention has been paid to the 75%-80% of CHR-P individuals who do not transition to psychosis. It is an open question whether multivariable models could be developed to predict remission outcomes at the same level of performance and generalizability as those that predict conversion to psychosis. Participants were drawn from the North American Prodrome Longitudinal Study (NAPLS3). An empirically derived set of clinical and

OBJECTIVE: This longitudinal observational study investigated the role of prodromal symptoms in predicting headache onset, using electronic headache diaries to assess symptom occurrence and predictive utility in individuals with migraine.
BACKGROUND: Prodromal symptoms are early indicators of migraine that occur 2-48 h before the headache phase. Whereas commonly reported symptoms include fatigue, stiff neck, and sensitivity to light and sound, few studies have assessed their predictive abilities for headache onset. Understanding the relationship and reliability of these symptoms is important

Early identification of behavioral risk markers for anxiety is essential to optimize long-term outcomes in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. This study analyzed attentional avoidance and its relation to anxiety and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) symptomatology during social and nonsocial fear conditions in toddlers with fragile X syndrome (FXS) and Down syndrome (DS). Toddlers with FXS and DS exhibited increased nonsocial attentional avoidance relative to typically developing (TD) toddlers. Attentional avoidance was not related to anxiety symptom severity in any group; however, highe

BACKGROUND: Prodromal symptoms prior to first episode mania/hypomania have been reported. However, the relationship between temperament and manic/hypomanic prodromal symptoms has not been investigated. We hypothesized that subjects scoring higher on cyclothymic and irritable temperament scales show more manic/hypomanic prodromal symptoms.
METHOD: Euthymic patients diagnosed with bipolar-I or -II disorder within 8 years underwent retrospective assessments with the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris and San Diego-autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A) and the Bipolar Prodrome Symptom Scale-Ret

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Glymphatic dysfunction occurs in Parkinson's disease (PD), but its status in prodromal PD (pPD) is unclear. Using the diffusion tensor imaging along perivascular spaces (DTI-ALPS) index as an indirect proxy, this study aims to evaluate glymphatic-related changes in a pPD cohort and to explore their relationship with symptoms, gray matter volume, and risk of phenoconversion.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Parkinson's Progression Marker Initiative, including 51 healthy controls (HC), 83 individuals with pPD, and 202 with de novo PD (dnPD). The pPD cohort underwent

We report a patient experiencing episodes of night terrors who, after 24-h ECG monitoring and polysomnography, was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea-induced atrioventricular block. His symptoms resolved following continuous positive airway pressure therapy. This case may indicate that night terrors can be an atypical manifestation of hypopnoea or arrhythmia. Therefore, it may be reasonable for physicians to conduct appropriate screening and diagnostic tests to diagnose underlying treatable diseases like obstructive sleep apnoea in individuals presenting with suggestive symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Even with reperfusion therapies, the prognosis of patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO) related stroke remains poor. We aimed to test the hypothesis that the presence of prodromal symptoms, an easily available anamnestic data, is a key determinant of poor functional outcome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from patients with BAO treated in Lille, France, with mechanical thrombectomy (MT) between 2015 and 2021 were prospectively collected. The presence of prodromal symptoms was defined by previous transient neurological deficit or gradual progressive clinical worsening precedin

A substantial number of patients who meet criteria for a prodromal syndrome for first psychosis are treated with antipsychotic and/or antidepressant medications. There is suggestive evidence that both classes of medication may reduce prodromal symptoms. This longitudinal study examined the relation of antipsychotic and antidepressant medication with prodromal symptom severity at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Participants met Structured Interview for Prodromal Syndromes (SIPS) criteria for the prodrome, and were evaluated at eight centers as part of the North American Prodrome Longitudinal St

BACKGROUND: The lived experience of Parkinson's disease (PD) includes motor and non-motor symptoms. There is a need to capture the earliest patient experiences in a sensitive and reliable manner for the successful development of interventions that may delay clinical progression in PD.
OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to synthesize published literature about patient-reported symptoms in prodromal and early motor stages of PD and develop a conceptual framework of the earliest lived experiences in PD.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review of the published literature in MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCOPUS, and CINAH

OBJECTIVE: This study explores and documents the patient experience during the prodrome phase of migraine.
BACKGROUND: Migraine attacks can be divided into four stages: the prodrome (or premonitory phase), the aura, the headache phase, and postdrome. Qualitative data on the range of symptoms during the prodrome and their timing relative to headache onset are sparse. Prodromal symptoms may predict the onset of migraine headache pain and provide a clinically useful benchmark for initiation of treatment early in an attack before pain begins.
DESIGN/METHODS: Eligible participants with a clinicia

The diagnostic criteria for adult-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) in patients with Down syndrome (DS) have not been standardised. This study investigated the specific symptoms of AD in the prodromal stage of DS, the mean age at diagnosis at each stage of dementia, and the relationship between intellectual disability (ID) and dementia. PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase were searched for studies on DS, AD, early-stage disease, initial symptoms, and prodromal dementia registered between January 2012 and January 2022. We also performed a meta-analysis of the differences between the mean age at pro
