The impaired and/or disabled anesthesiologist.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Impairment and/or disability resulting from any of a number of etiologies will afflict a significant number of anesthesiologists at some point during their career. The impaired anesthesiologist can be difficult to identify and challenging to manage. Questions will arise as to if, how, and when colleagues, family members, or friends should intercede if significant impairment is suspected. This review will examine the common sources of impairment among anesthesiologists and the professional implications of these conditions. We will discuss the obligations of an anesthesiologist

[Failure of a mourning ritual and reactive depression].

In some African societies, mourning rituals are a way of isolating death from the territory of the living and to allow the bereaved to regain, after a certain time, their place in society. However, for a young educated woman confronted with the brutal death of her sister, the traditional ritual to which her family subjected her resulted in a prolonged reactive depression combined with cognitive disorders..

Assessment of Physician Sleep and Wellness, Burnout, and Clinically Significant Medical Errors.

IMPORTANCE: Sleep-related impairment in physicians is an occupational hazard associated with long and sometimes unpredictable work hours and may contribute to burnout and self-reported clinically significant medical error. OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations between sleep-related impairment and occupational wellness indicators in physicians practicing at academic-affiliated medical centers and the association of sleep-related impairment with self-reported clinically significant medical errors, before and after adjusting for burnout. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional s

Cortical/cerebral visual impairment: Assessment to intervention.

Cortical/cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is an emerging cause of childhood visual impairment in developing countries such as India. Drawing on existing literature on global best practices in CVI, available assessment tools, clinical experience, and professional consensus, this paper presents guidelines for the clinical and functional assessment of children with CVI and outlines rehabilitative strategies to guide individualized interventions.

Patient, parent and professional expert perspectives on personalized regenerative implants: a qualitative focus group study.

Background: Perspectives of patients, parents and professional experts on personalized regenerative implants for regenerative medicine purposes are largely unknown.Method: To better understand these perspectives, we conducted four focus groups with professional experts of mixed European nationality (n = 8), Dutch patients with regular implants (n = 8), Dutch and Belgian (n = 5) and Spanish (n = 8) parents of children with cleft palate. Results: Two overarching themes were identified: 'patient-centered research and care' and 'ambivalent attitudes toward personalized regenerative implants'.Discus

Alcohol, Cancer, Neurobiology, and Aviation Safety: Implications for Aerospace Medicine and Pilot Health.

Alcohol use in aviation has traditionally been addressed in relation to acute impairment and operational safety. However, the health implications of alcohol extend beyond intoxication and include carcinogenic risk, neurobiological changes associated with alcohol use disorders, and potential effects on cognitive functioning. This narrative review examines these issues within the occupational and aeromedical contexts of professional pilots. It also considers aviation-specific factors that may influence behavioral health and help-seeking, along with the role of the Human Intervention Motivation S

A Societal Sleep Prescription.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

We are suffering a global sleep-loss epidemic. The health consequences within an individual are well characterized. But does society suffer just as much? Here, I discuss how insufficient sleep erodes our societal fabric as much as it does our biological fabric, and offer some prescriptive remedies.

How do we talk to the children? Child life consultation to support the children of seriously ill adult inpatients.

BACKGROUND: Families with young children often struggle to talk about and cope with a parent's life-threatening illness and potential death. Adult interdisciplinary palliative medicine teams often feel unprepared to facilitate the open communication with these children that has been shown to reduce anxiety, depression, and other behavioral problems. In pediatric settings, child life specialists routinely provide this support to hospitalized children as well as their siblings and parents. Although these services are the standard of care in pediatrics, no research reports their use in the care o

Prevalence and health correlates of gambling problems in substance abuse counselors.

This study examined the prevalence of disordered gambling in substance abuse counselors. Participants (N = 328) completed an anonymous self-report survey assessing lifetime disordered gambling, past two-month gambling behavior, and current mental and physical health. The lifetime prevalence rates of pathological and problem gambling in this sample (11.9% and 6.4%, respectively) were higher than rates reported in general population surveys. Poorer physical health was associated with pathological gambling, but mental health was not. These results suggest that substance abuse counselors may benef

Assessing professional caregiver burden related to patient agitation in dementia: A systematic review of measurement scales.

BackgroundAgitation is a common behavioral and psychological symptom of dementia that places significant burden on caregivers. While its impact on family caregivers is well-documented, its effect on professional caregivers remains underexplored. Additionally, it is unclear whether existing caregiver burden scales adequately capture the International Psychogeriatric Association's (IPA) definition of agitation. Since agitation requires different treatment approaches than cognitive impairment, its distinct burden warrants further investigation.ObjectiveThis systematic review examined scales used

Defining Exposures in Professional Football: Professional American-Style Football Players as an Occupational Cohort.

Studies of professional American football players have shown that football-related activities lead to acute injuries and may have long-term adverse health outcomes including osteoarthritis, neurocognitive impairment, and cardiovascular disease. However, the full complement of what constitutes professional football exposure has yet to be effectively articulated. Most likely, professional football exposure encompasses a multifaceted array of experiences including head impacts and joint stresses, long-term pain medication use, dietary restrictions, and strenuous training regimens.
