Expressed emotion: a call for partnership among relatives, patients, and professionals.

The emotional climate within the home is a powerful predictor of relapse and remission in schizophrenic disorders. Research has focused on "expressed emotion" (EE), a measure of relatives' expressed attitudes about the patient. Recently, EE has become a focus of controversy. Correcting a misperception that EE research blames families of schizophrenic patients, we clarify the concepts and data base that underlie EE research, provide an operational definition of EE, and briefly review the history of EE research in schizophrenia and other disorders. Then, methodological and conceptual issues in t

Exploring the "shared" in shared decision-making in the care for children with chronic diseases or disabilities: what are the roles of parents and professionals?

There is a growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of shared decision-making (SDM) in the care for children with chronic conditions and/or disabilities. Although participation in SDM can be more or less active, the tuning between parents and professionals about the way they want to participate in SDM is often an implicit process, limiting parents' optimal involvement. Role definitions may support both partners in the process of SDM. We conducted a scoping review to investigate the available knowledge on the interpretation and variability of different roles of parents and prof

Behavioral health provider training to enhance family partnerships.

OBJECTIVE: Providers' partnership with families of adults with serious mental health and other behavioral health conditions can be a powerful recovery tool. Multiple barriers complicate family partnerships, and providers require training to overcome these obstacles. This article describes barriers to family partnerships, the state of available training in empirically based strategies, provider interest, and an accessible training initiative that can lay a foundation for bridging this gap. METHODS: A national online survey of 357 behavioral health professionals investigated their past training

The reprofessionalisation of community pharmacy? An exploration of attitudes to extended roles for community pharmacists amongst pharmacists and General Practioners in the United Kingdom.

In the light of recent developments within the British National Health Service some sociologists have suggested that the medical profession's status is under threat. They have specified a range of factors contributing to this state of affairs, such as the new consumerism; however, it is thought that attempts by other, related occupations at reprofessionalisation are particularly significant in this trend. It may be possible to understand recent initiatives at extending community pharmacists' role within this framework. This paper suggests that while community pharmacy is developing strategies

Parents as partners in the treatment of childhood stuttering.

Speech-language pathologists involved in treating childhood stuttering have increasingly emphasized the need for parental involvement in intervention. In this article, we review prevailing theoretical models of stuttering and illustrate various ways in which these models can be used to guide practitioners in determining how best to include parents in intervention. We argue that successful parental involvement depends upon the ability of parents and clinicians to reach consensus on issues such as the parents' role in the onset and development of stuttering, the rationale for including parents i

You are safe here: A flyer with re-orientating messages for families of patients with delirium in the intensive care unit.

Patients in delirium require trustful communication and re-orientation. We developed a flyer with positive, re-orientating suggestions for families of delirious patients in intensive care units. Suggestions include creating a safe environment, interpreting unusual behaviours positively and fostering mental resilience. Additionally, families are encouraged to prioritize their own well-being, recognizing their crucial role in supporting their loved ones. This flyer offers practical strategies across four key areas: ensuring security and orientation, reframing noises and body experiences, managin

A young child with a history of wheeze.

The parents of a 3-year old boy are anxious about their son who has recurring episodes of wheezing. They are frustrated that no one seems to be able to give them answers to their questions and would like a referral to a specialist. Does their son have asthma and what is the prognosis; how can the recurrent wheezing be managed and can the risk of asthma be reduced; are there lifestyle changes that could improve the environment and avoid triggers? Communication and support from the family practice team were essential. Listening to the parents' concerns, explaining the diagnostic uncertainty, bei

The Trauma Informed Family Meeting: A New Model of Information Sharing and Family Support During Cardiac Admission.

While best practice guidelines for family meetings in pediatric CICU settings emphasize empathic listening, deliberation, and a focus on family experiences and values, recent research reveals that cardiac care teams face barriers when putting these guidelines into practice. Exposure to traumatic medical experiences impacts the degree to which both family members and cardiac clinicians are able to engage in collaborative conversations during family meetings. Instead, these meetings often become lengthy summaries of the patient's medical history, bringing us no closer to the goal of family cente

[Family management of cannabis in adolescent].

Cannabis is the most frequently used illegal drug in France. In 2007, the average age for a first use was 15.1 years. Most teenagers will limit their use to a few experiences or controlled use. However, for those who do become dependent, the lapse between the first use and dependence is brief (approximately 18 months) with an average of 28 months compared to tobacco (3-5 years) and alcohol (5-9 years). In light of this brief delay, it is crucial to quickly recognize adolescents who have problem cannabis use and to educate parents to warning signs and to teach them how to efficiently discuss th

Exploring End-of-Life Care Team Communication: An Interprofessional Simulation Study.

Effective team communication is necessary for the provision of high-quality health care. Yet, recent graduates from diverse health-care disciplines report inadequate training in communication skills and end-of-life care. This study explored the impact of a withdrawal of life-sustaining measures interprofessional simulation on team communication skills of students representing medicine, nursing, and social work. Importance of education and the role of the patient and family in the care of anorectal malformations.

During this early part of the 21st century online technology has prompted many major advances in medical care. In this section we argue that this is particularly evident in the treatment and care of patients born with Anorectal Malformation (ARM) and Hirschsprung's Disease (HD). Our stories show that anyone born with these complex colorectal conditions in the 20th century was destined to a life of isolation and stigma. Here we explore the lack of understanding and recognition of the psychological effects on children and families which has characterised this period. We show that advances in cli
