Prevalence and predictors of prolonged grief disorder, anxiety and depression in bereaved ALS family caregivers: a national survey of distress and support needs after bereavement.

OBJECTIVE: The distress of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) family caregivers may not end after bereavement. Yet, the prevalence of psychological distress and support needs after bereavement are unclear. This study examined the prevalence and predictors of prolonged grief disorder (PGD), anxiety and depression, and level of needed and received support after bereavement. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey of a national cohort of bereaved ALS family caregivers recruited through the National Rehabilitation Center for Neuromuscular Diseases in Denmark. Questions included dis

Predicting levels of prolonged grief disorder symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic: An integrated approach of classical data exploration, predictive machine learning, and explainable AI.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies on Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) primarily employed classical approaches to link bereaved individuals' characteristics with PGD symptom levels. This study utilized machine learning to identify key factors influencing PGD symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We analyzed data from 479 participants through an online survey, employing classical data exploration, predictive machine learning, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to determine key factors influencing PGD symptoms measured with the Traumatic Grief Inventory - Self Report (TGI-SR) from 19 varia

Resilience among parents whose child died of cancer - investigating its role on psychological distress and prolonged grief disorder: results from a cross-sectional survey in Switzerland.

INTRODUCTION: The death of a child profoundly impacts parents, often leading to anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress. However, factors such as resilience-defined as the capacity to adapt to adversity-are less explored. Resilience may mitigate grief-related distress. This study aimed to: (a) describe and compare resilience levels between bereaved parents and parents of childhood cancer survivors (CCS parents), (b) identify sociodemographic and cancer-related determinants of resilience among bereaved parents, and (c) investigate resilience's association with psychological distress and p

Pooling data from studies on prolonged grief: the Multi-region Archive of Research data on Bereavement and Loss from Empirical Studies (MARBLES) project.

Introduction: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) was newly included in the 11th edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) and the text revision of the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR). There is a need to increase our understanding of the prevalence, nature, and risk factors of this condition. Research in this area can be advanced by pooling existing datasets. Objective: The MARBLES (Multi-region Archive of Research data on Bereavement and Loss from Empirical Studies) project was initiated to create a consortium of researche

Exploring the Relationship Between Prolonged Grief and Borderline Personality Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is a new diagnosis that is often mistaken for other psychopathologies. We report a case of PGD in a patient who screened positive for personality disorder. Both PGD and personality disorder symptoms were much improved after a course of prolonged grief disorder therapy. CASE PRESENTATION: A bereaved woman in her mid-20s sought treatment for depression 9 months after the death of her father. Her depressive symptoms responded well to antidepressant medication and a brief course of interpersonal psychotherapy. However, prolonged grief symptoms persisted

Performance of DSM-5 Persistent Complex Bereavement Disorder Criteria in a Community Sample of Bereaved Military Family Members.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article was to examine the accuracy of DSM-5 proposed criteria for persistent complex bereavement disorder in identifying putative cases of clinically impairing grief and in excluding nonclinical cases. Performance of criteria sets for prolonged grief disorder and complicated grief were similarly assessed. METHOD: Participants were family members of U.S. military service members who died of any cause since September 11, 2001 (N=1,732). Putative clinical and nonclinical samples were derived from this community sample using cutoff scores from the Inventory of Comp

Prolonged grief in refugees, parenting behaviour and children's mental health.

BACKGROUND: Many refugees experience bereavement, and as a result they suffer elevated rates of prolonged grief disorder. Evidence also indicates that elevated rates of psychological disturbance in refugee children can be associated with parental mental health. This study examined the extent to which prolonged grief disorder in refugees is associated with their parenting behaviour and in turn with their children's mental health. METHODS: This study recruited participants from the Building a New Life in Australia prospective cohort study of refugees admitted to Australia between October 2013 a

Retinal Pigment Epithelium Changes in Pediatric Combined Hamartoma of the Retina and Retinal Pigment Epithelium: Wide-Field Swept-Source OCT Findings.

IMPORTANCE: Although grief-focused cognitive behavior therapies are the most empirically supported treatment for prolonged grief disorder, many people find this treatment difficult. A viable alternative for treatment is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relative efficacies of grief-focused cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to reduce prolonged grief disorder severity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A single-blind, parallel, randomized clinical trial was conducted among adults aged 18 to 70 years with prolonged grief disorder, a

Dynamic networks of prolonged grief symptoms in daily life.

BACKGROUND: According to network theories, mental disorders, including prolonged grief disorder (PGD), comprise networks of dynamically connected symptoms. Examining how prolonged grief symptoms are connected over time could reveal the patterns driving their persistence. This study provides the first empirical investigation of prolonged grief symptom networks using self-reported data on prolonged grief assessed multiple times daily. METHODS: Adults whose partner, family member, or friend died on average 30 months ago (N = 229, 80 % women, Mage = 51) rated prolonged grief symptom intensity usi

Virtual rescripting after loss using deepfake technology in prolonged grief treatment: a study protocol for a multiple baseline design.

Background: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) is characterized by severe and persistent grief that impairs daily functioning. Cognitive behavioural therapy is the first-line treatment but yields only small-to-moderate effects. Imagery rescripting, which targets distressing loss-related memories, is increasingly used for PGD and related trauma complaints. Incorporating deepfake technology into imagery rescripting, i.e. virtual rescripting, may increase emotional engagement and facilitate processing of the loss, potentially improving treatment outcomes. However, this approach has not yet been empir

[Toward an integrated understanding of traumatic grief - connecting prolonged grief, posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms].

BACKGROUND: Psychological grief symptoms following bereavement have been extensively researched and described, with the distinction, generally speaking, of three sets of disorders: prolonged grief disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. AIM: To investigate the connection and co-occurrence between the symptoms of these three disorders. METHOD: Conducting and combining studies from a categorical, dimensional, person-centered and network perspective on psychopathology. RESULTS: We found a prevalence of 49% of prolonged grief disorder among traumatically bereaved individuals. Of

Prolonged grief and insomnia symptoms in cancer-bereaved parents: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parents who experience the death of a child may develop a range of mental health problems including insomnia and prolonged grief disorder (PGD). Insomnia symptoms predict worsening of prolonged grief symptoms and persons with more chronic insomnia trajectories may be at risk of developing PGD. However, it remains to be established when prolonged grief and insomnia symptomatology co-occur and which potential risk factors heighten the risk of comorbid insomnia and prolonged grief. METHODS: To address these questions, we conducted a cross-sectional, registry-based survey study involvi

My grief app for prolonged grief in bereaved parents: a randomised waitlist-controlled trial.

A minority of bereaved adults experiences prolonged grief disorder, depression, and/or posttraumatic stress disorder, with heightened risks observed among bereaved parents. Cognitive-behavioural therapies, both face-to-face and online, have demonstrated efficacy in treating post-loss mental health problems. Mobile phone applications potentially offer an efficient and cost-effective way to deliver self-help to bereaved adults, yet controlled effectiveness studies are lacking. Therefore, we examined the short-term efficacy of the My Grief app, based on cognitive-behavioural therapy, in 248 berea

Rumination in bereaved parents: Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish version of the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS).

BACKGROUND: Bereaved parents may be at higher risk to develop persistent, severe and disabling grief, termed prolonged grief. Grief rumination, repetitive thinking about the causes and consequences of the loss, is a malleable cognitive process that maintains prolonged grief. Grief rumination can be measured with the Utrecht Grief Rumination Scale (UGRS). The present study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the new Swedish version of the UGRS in a sample of bereaved parents. METHODS: A Swedish nationwide postal survey including measures of demographic and loss-related variables, g

Grief and bereavement: A pre-registered systematic review of neuroimaging studies.

Grief is a universally experienced response to the loss of a significant person, representing a profoundly stressful life event that can have lasting impacts on mental and physical health. Despite its inevitability, the neural mechanisms underlying grief remain poorly understood, hindering the development of effective interventions to improve outcomes for individuals coping with loss. To address this gap, we systematically reviewed functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies related to brain connectivity, structural changes, peripheral physiology, and neuroendocrine, imm

Restricted End-of-Life Care and Mourning During COVID-19: A Longitudinal Study on Grief, Mental Health, and Rumination.

This longitudinal study examined the mental health impact of COVID-19 restrictions on individuals bereaved during the pandemic, focusing on the mediating role of grief-specific rumination. A total of 141 adults who lost a significant person during the COVID-19 pandemic completed questionnaires at two time points, assessing perceived restrictions, psychological impact, trauma, anxiety, depression, prolonged grief, and rumination. Results showed that high levels of restrictions' psychological impact were associated with elevated symptoms of trauma, anxiety, depression, and prolonged grief. Altho

Comparison of proposed diagnostic criteria for pathological grief using a sample of elderly bereaved spouses in Denmark: Perspectives on future bereavement research.

BACKGROUND: A distinct grief-specific disorder is included in the ICD-11. Lack of clarity remains regarding whether different proposed diagnostic criteria capture similar or different diagnostic entities. Our aim was to examine the specificity of four proposed diagnostic criteria-sets for pathological grief in a population-based sample. METHODS: Participants were 206 conjugally bereaved elderly Danes (59% female; mean age = 72.5 years, SD = 4.2; range 65-81) who completed self-report questionnaires six months post-loss. The main measure was the Danish version of Inventory of Complicated Grief

Responding to grief-related needs in older adults: protocol for a community-based matched-care trial (GriefDiff).

BACKGROUND: Prolonged grief disorder (PGD) affects a significant proportion of bereaved people and may be especially burdensome in later life, when cumulative losses, health problems, and reduced social resources can hinder adjustment. Grief support is often reactive, and many older adults do not access timely, appropriate care. GriefDiff will study a differentiated, community-based model that matches intervention intensity and format to individual risk and relational needs. METHODS: GriefDiff is a mixed-methods (QUAN→QUAL) protocol. The quantitative component is a three-arm, tiered, parallel-
