Morphologic indication for proprioception in the human ciliary muscle.

PURPOSE: To search for proprioceptive nerve terminals in human ciliary muscle. METHODS: In 48 human donor eyes, histologic and ultrathin sections cut in different planes and wholemounts of the ciliary muscle were studied. Immunohistochemical staining with antibodies against pan-neuronal antigens and antigens reported as markers for sensory terminals in other organs was performed. RESULTS: Among the markers for proprioceptive terminals, only calretinin was present in the ciliary body. Calretinin-immunoreactive (IR) nerve terminals surrounded the posterior and reticular ciliary muscle tips and

Extraocular proprioception is required for spatial localization in man.

We studied the effect of extraocular muscle deafferentation on the performance of manual pointing to foveated visual targets at different craniotopic locations. Five patients who underwent unilateral thermocoagulation of the trigeminal nerve (V) for trigeminal neuralgia were tested before and after surgery. Only the group of patients with postsurgical corneal anaesthesia, attesting to involvement of the ophthalmic branch (which carries the ocular proprioceptive fibres), presented deficits in accuracy of pointing. The position of initial and final pointing was shifted toward the lesioned side p

Are we Measuring Knee Proprioception Correctly? A Case-Control Study of Joint Reposition Sense and Reflex Latencies for Measuring Proprioception in Knee Hemophilic Arthropathy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Knee proprioception deficits have been found in several types of knee injuries using different measurement techniques. In some cases, such as hemophilic arthropathy, such deficits have been largely inferred from the results of gait and postural stability tests. Hemophilic arthropathy is supposed to produce balance and neuromuscular control impairments associated to knee proprioception deficits. However, there is a lack of studies focused specifically on the measurement of joint proprioception in this group of patients. The aim of this case-control study was to analyze loca

How effective is proprioception exercise on pain, grip force, dexterity and proprioception of elbow joint in patients with tennis elbow? A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with tennis elbow (TE) disorder suffer from proprioception deficits alongside other symptoms, which usually is neglected to be targeted in different physiotherapy protocols. This study aimed to investigate the effects of proprioception exercises on treatment outcomes. METHODS: In this RCT, 14 males and 30 females TE volunteered patients were randomly divided into two intervention (IG) and control (CG) groups, in which CG received routine physiotherapy, while IG underwent further proprioception exercises for 18 sessions within six weeks. Pain, function, grip force, dexteri

Assessing Lower Limb Proprioception in Diabetic Neuropathy: Challenges and Methods.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy often leads to loss of joint position sense, distal weakness, and an increased risk of falls. Since proprioception and somatosensory information from the feet are essential for balance and gait control, assessing lower limb proprioception is crucial in understanding the impact of neurological conditions, injuries, and aging on mobility and quality of life. However, evaluating proprioceptive function in the lower limbs remains challenging due to the complexity of sensory-motor integration. OBJECTIVES: This review discusses various methods for assessin

FRONTAL AND PARIETAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO PROPRIOCEPTION AND MOTOR SKILL LEARNING.

Motor skill learning is the process of developing new movements with practice until they can be performed automatically. This necessitates the interaction of high-level cognitive processes with low-level sensorimotor mechanisms. Skill learning involves not only changes in the motor system but also proprioception (position sense). Proprioceptive deficits increase variability and decrease accuracy of movement. The somatosensory cortex, where low-level proprioception is processed, is known to play a role in motor skill learning, but the involvement of higher-level proprioceptive regions is unclea

Ankle proprioception and the relationship to rigidity in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Proprioceptive mechanoreceptor afferents form the basis for the perception of body position and muscle tone regulation. Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with proprioceptive dysfunction. This study aimed to characterize the extent of ankle position sense dysfunction in PD and its relationship with abnormal muscle tone. METHODS: Sixteen people with PD and 16 controls participated. Using a 2-forced-choice psychophysical paradigm, a participant's ankle was passively rotated to two positions - a reference of 15° plantarflexion and a smaller amplitude comparison position. Subsequen

A Holistic Indirect Contact Identification Method for Soft Robot Proprioception.

Soft robots hold great promise but are notoriously difficult to control due to their compliance and back-drivability. In order to implement useful controllers, improved methods of perceiving robot pose (position and orientation of the entire robot body) in free and perturbed states are needed. In this work, we present a holistic approach to robot pose perception in free bending and with external contact, using multiple soft strain sensors on the robot (not collocated with the point of contact). By comparing the deviation of these sensors from their value in an unperturbed pose, we are able to

Substitutive proprioception feedback of a prosthetic wrist by electrotactile stimulation.

OBJECTIVE: Sensory feedback of upper-limb prostheses is widely desired and studied. As important components of proprioception, position, and movement feedback help users to control prostheses better. Among various feedback methods, electrotactile stimulation is a potential method for coding proprioceptive information of a prosthesis. This study was motivated by the need for proprioception information for a prosthetic wrist. The flexion-extension (FE) position and movement information of the prosthetic wrist are transmitted back to the human body through multichannel electrotactile stimulation.

The Effect of Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex Tear on Wrist Proprioception.

PURPOSE: This study examined the influence of triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) deep fiber tears on wrist proprioception. METHODS: The study involved 48 subjects: 24 with deep fiber TFCC tears and 24 with healthy wrists. A specially created sensor measured wrist proprioception in 3 axes of movement. Absolute differences between target and subject-reproduced angles were compared in injured and healthy wrists and in injured and contralateral patient wrists. A greater difference in reproduced angles was deemed to reflect a lesser ability to approximate a target angle. RESULTS: In wrists

Thalamo-insular pathway conveying orofacial muscle proprioception in the rat.

Little is known about how proprioceptive signals arising from muscles reach to higher brain regions such as the cerebral cortex. We have recently shown that a particular thalamic region, the caudo-ventromedial edge (VPMcvm) of ventral posteromedial thalamic nucleus (VPM), receives the proprioceptive signals from jaw-closing muscle spindles (JCMSs) in rats. In this study, we further addressed how the orofacial thalamic inputs from the JCMSs were transmitted from the thalamus (VPMcvm) to the cerebral cortex in rats. Injections of a retrograde and anterograde neuronal tracer, wheat-germ agglutini

Stochastic resonance electrical stimulation to improve proprioception in knee osteoarthritis.

Proprioceptive deficits occur with knee osteoarthritis (OA) and improving proprioception may slow joint degeneration by allowing more appropriate joint loading. Stochastic resonance (SR) stimulation improves balance and the sensitivity of specific mechanoreceptors. Our purpose was to evaluate the effects of SR electrical stimulation combined with a knee sleeve on proprioception in subjects with knee OA. Joint position sense (JPS) was measured in 38 subjects with knee OA during four conditions in both a partial weight-bearing (PWB) and non weight-bearing (NWB) task: no electrical stimulation/no

Postnatal regulation of limb proprioception by muscle-derived neurotrophin-3.

To investigate the effects of neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) on postnatal proprioceptive neurons and their targets, transgenic mice were generated that use the myosin light chain 1 (mlc) promoter to overexpress NT-3 in skeletal muscle. Ribonuclease protection assays revealed that NT-3 overexpression in hindlimb skeletal muscle began at embryonic day 14 (E14) and continued throughout adulthood. Overexpression of NT-3 during late embryogenesis resulted in increased numbers of large sensory and small fusimotor axons. Within a week of birth, mlc/NT-3 mice retract their limbs to the torso when lifted by the

Afferent mechanism of cortical myoclonus studied by proprioception-related SEPs.

Proprioception-related somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) to passive flexion movement of the middle finger at proximal interphalangeal joint were recorded in 7 patients with myoclonus of cortical origin who demonstrated enlarged electrical SEPs (giant SEPs). In 3 out of the 7 patients, the proprioception-related SEPs were also enlarged. The remaining 4 patients showed giant electrical SEPs without enhancement of proprioception-related SEPs. Long loop electromyographic response was recorded during the resting condition in all of the 3 patients with enlarged proprioception-related SEPs. We h

Acuity of Proprioceptive Localization Varies with Body Region.

We accurately sense locations of objects touching various points on the body and, if they are irritants, make accurate rapid movements to remove them. Such movements require accurate proprioception of orientation and motion of the reaching limb and of the target. However, it is unknown whether acuity of these sensations is similar for different points on the body. We investigated accuracy of comfortable speed reaching movements of the right index-tip by 10 subjects (five females) to touch 12 different body locations with and without vision with the body part stationary in different locations a

Proprioceptive sensitivity in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome patients.

Reaching movements are rapidly adapted following training with rotated visual feedback of the hand. Our laboratory has also found that this visuomotor adaptation results in changes in estimates of felt hand position (proprioceptive recalibration) in the direction of the visuomotor distortion (Cressman and Henriques in J Neurophysiol 102:3505-3518, 2009; Cressman et al. in Exp Brain Res 205:533-544, 2010). In the current study, we investigated proprioceptive acuity and proprioceptive recalibration in a group of individuals with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a degenerative condition associated w
