Determinants of use of hearing protection devices in Canadian lumber mill workers.

BACKGROUND: In a cohort study of lumber mill workers' exposure to noise and incidence of heart disease, initial noise estimates were likely overestimated because they did not account for reductions afforded by the use of hearing protection. As such information was seldom available for individual workers, modeling was necessary to predict hearing protection use and derive adjusted noise measures. OBJECTIVE: To develop a multilevel model of the likelihood of use of hearing protection devices (HPDs) for British Columbia (Canada) lumber mill workers. METHOD: The study population included 13,147

The 'double bag': a device for protection against blood spray in the management of epistaxis.

Nasal bleeding is one of the commonest emergencies that place medical staff at risk of blood contamination during management. A sizeable proportion of incidents have been reported where blood splashes in the facial area caused such contamination, and the exposed conjunctivae are potential sites for transmission of human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). We present a simple self-made device named the 'Double Bag', which is highly effective in preventing blood spraying during the management of epistaxis. It was designed to be used while treating epistaxis or removing nasal packing after surgery, w

Assessment of Device-Related Thrombus and Associated Clinical Outcomes With the WATCHMAN Left Atrial Appendage Closure Device for Embolic Protection in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation (from the PROTECT-AF Trial).

Left atrial appendage closure with the WATCHMAN device is an alternative to anticoagulation for stroke prevention in selected patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). LA device-related thrombus (DRT) is poorly defined and understood. We aimed to (1) develop consensus echocardiographic diagnostic criteria for DRT; (2) estimate the incidence of DRT; and (3) determine clinical event rates in patients with DRT. In phase 1 (training), a training manual was developed and reviewed by 3 echocardiographers with left atrial appendage closure device experience. All available transesophageal (TEE) studies

The impact of protective eyewear and device position on operator radiation dose during handheld portable X‑ray device use.

OBJECTIVES: The use of handheld dental X-ray devices has been increasing, raising concerns about operator radiation exposure. This study evaluated the effects of handheld dental X-ray device positioning and protective eyewear on the absorbed dose received by the operator's eye lens and pituitary gland. METHODS: Calibrated optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters were placed at the eye lens and sphenoid regions of an anthropomorphic head phantom. Measurements were obtained under different device positioning scenarios, with and without protective eyewear. Four operator positions were evaluat

Customized Face Guards as Protective Devices for Ocular Trauma in Futsal Players: A Case Report and Clinical Efficacy Evaluation.

We present a case involving a futsal player with brain concussions and commotio retinae to protect the affected area and support a safe, prompt return to play custom face guard instead of a commercial face guard and sports goggles. For a better fit, we fabricated a custom face guard, for which a facial impression was taken using dental alginate material and plaster in July 2019. The following month, the custom face guard was set on the player's face so that its outline provided minimal coverage of the nose area compared with a conventional face guard. The field of view during play and the guar

[Roller skating accidents--the pattern of injuries and use of protective devices. Roller skating accidents in Viborg 1995-1998].

Circumstances and outcome of roller skating accidents (RSA) and the use of protective gear was surveyed. During 1.1.95-31.12.98 a questionnaire survey was conducted among subjects involved in RSA and combined with data from the A + E dept. A major increase in RSA was reported during this four year study period. A total of 399 injuries were recorded, of which 178 had wrist-related injuries and of which 125 had fractures. RSA accounted for a total of 17% of all wrist fractures among 11-15 year-old teenagers. In 1998 this percentage had increased to 28%. The median age for wrist fracture was 12.6

SafeHeal Colovac Colorectal Anastomosis Protection Device evaluation (SAFE-2) pivotal study: an international randomized controlled study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the Colovac Colorectal Anastomosis Protection Device.

AIM: Although proximal faecal diversion is standard of care to protect patients with high-risk colorectal anastomoses against septic complications of anastomotic leakage, it is associated with significant morbidity. The Colovac device (CD) is an intraluminal bypass device intended to avoid stoma creation in patients undergoing low anterior resection. A preliminary study (SAFE-1) completed in three European centres demonstrated 100% protection of colorectal anastomoses in 15 patients, as evidenced by the absence of faeces below the CD. This phase III trial (SAFE-2) aims to evaluate the safety a

Neuroprotection Devices in Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories: Does It Sufficiently Protect Our Patients?

Stroke is a devastating complication of cardiovascular interventions. Intraprocedural stroke is a well-documented and feared risk of cardiac percutaneous transcatheter procedures. If clinically significant strokes are absent, silent strokes remain the next in line to pose large concerns related to future cognitive decline, stroke risk, and overall increased morbidity and mortality. Cerebral protection devices (CPD) developed overtime aim to neutralize this risk through either a capture-based filter or a deflector mechanism. Many CPDs exist currently, each one unique, with varying degrees of ev

Evaluation of a Novel Enhanced Radiation Protection Device in Interventional Neuroradiology: a Phantom Study.

INTRODUCTION: Scatter radiation during interventional neuroradiological (INR) procedures is potentially harmful to the operator and cath-lab staff. Enhanced radiation protection devices (ERPDs) aim to improve safety by minimizing scatter radiation in addition to standard and personal protective equipment (PPE). This study evaluated the efficacy of a novel ERPD in INR. METHODS: Radiation exposure of the main operator was estimated by measuring the local dose rate at the examination position. An anthropomorphic patient whole body phantom was used simulating a standard INR procedure. The relativ

Use of cerebral embolic protection devices for endovascular treatment of a stenotic brachiocephalic trunk.

High-grade brachiocephalic artery stenosis is a rare manifestation of atherosclerotic disease with significant implications for patient morbidity, mortality and stroke risk. Clinical presentation often includes ischaemic symptoms affecting the right upper limb or cerebral circulation. Endovascular intervention has emerged as the preferred management strategy, demonstrating reduced overall risk and complication rates; however, challenges remain, particularly regarding intraoperative stroke risk. This study presents a case of symptomatic brachiocephalic artery stenosis in an elderly woman manage

Evaluation of microcirculatory protection in percutaneous revascularisation: A stent implantation technique and device comparison.

BACKGROUND: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is prognostically important and may also be a cause of persistent angina. The stent balloon inflation technique or material properties may influence the degree of CMD post-PCI. METHODS: Thirty-six patients with stable angina attending for elective PCI were randomized to either slow drug eluting stent (DES) implantation technique (DES slow group): +2 atm. every 5 s., maintained for a further 30 s or a standard stent implantation technique (DES std group): rapid inflation and deflation. Radiation Doses to the Entire Catheterization Laboratory Team With a Novel Radiation Protection Device.

BACKGROUND: A novel radiation protection system has recently been shown to shield the primary operator from scatter radiation, but whether it shields other members of the catheterization laboratory team remains unknown. METHODS: Radiation exposure data were collected prospectively in 50 coronary angiography cases, in which 25 were completed using standard radiation protection and 25 with a novel system consisting of a series of rigid shields and flexible radiation-resistant drapes. Radiation doses, measured with real-time dosimeters, were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: There were no

Embolic Protection Devices are Not Associated with Improved Outcomes of Atherectomy for Lower Extremity Revascularization.

BACKGROUND: Atherectomy is associated with a risk of distal embolization, but the role of embolic protection devices (EPDs) during atherectomy is not well-defined. This study examines the utilization and impact of EPD on the outcomes of atherectomy during peripheral vascular interventions (PVIs). METHODS: The annual trend in utilization of EPD during atherectomy in the Vascular Quality Initiative PVI files (2010-2018) was derived. Patients with concomitant open surgery, acute limb ischemia, emergent-status, concomitant thrombolysis, missing indication, missing EPD use, and missing long-term f

Randomized comparison of oesophageal protection with a temperature control device: results of the IMPACT study.

AIMS: Thermal injury to the oesophagus is an important cause of life-threatening complication after ablation for atrial fibrillation (AF). Thermal protection of the oesophageal lumen by infusing cold liquid reduces thermal injury to a limited extent. We tested the ability of a more powerful method of oesophageal temperature control to reduce the incidence of thermal injury. METHODS AND RESULTS: A single-centre, prospective, double-blinded randomized trial was used to investigate the ability of the ensoETM device to protect the oesophagus from thermal injury. This device was compared in a 1:1

The Use of Embolic Protection Devices during Lower Extremity Peripheral Vascular Interventions.

BACKGROUND: The use of embolic protection device (EPD) during lower extremity peripheral vascular interventions (PVI) has been reported, but its impact on outcomes is unclear. The goal of this study was to assess the use and outcomes of EPDs during PVI. METHODS: All PVI between 2010 and 2014 in the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) database were reviewed. The characteristics of patients and lesions treated with EPD were identified. A propensity-matched control group without EPD was selected. The outcomes of both groups were compared, and a multivariable analysis was performed. RESU
