BACKGROUND: Recent reports support the hypothesis that thrombophilia plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Perthes disease (PD) and the objective of this report is to show evidence of the role of protein C deficiency in the etiology of PD, based on a meta-analysis of current scientific literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Studies were selected in all languages over the last twenty years (1986 to 2006) in MEDLINE, LILACS and EMBASE data bases. The inclusion criteria involved controlled studies, those that presented protein C as a continuous variable, and studies conducted in children wit

PURPOSE: To report abnormalities in the protein C pathway and other vascular occlusion risk factors in patients with retinal vascular occlusion.
METHODS: In a study, we investigated 76 consecutive patients who had in-patient evaluation of venous or arterial retinal vascular occlusion. All patients underwent comprehensive tests for coagulation disorders including determinations of protein C, protein S, lupus anticoagulants, and resistance to activated protein C and were screened for vascular disease risk factors. Resistance to activated protein C was confirmed by a polymerase chain reaction me

We describe the case of a newborn presenting with multicystic encephalomalacy, hydrocephalus and bilateral hemovitreous. An underlying coagulation disorder was suspected and laboratory tests revealed severe protein C deficiency. At 25 days of life, after the appearance of purpura fulminans, replacement therapy with intravenous protein C concentrate (Ceprotin; Baxter, Vienna, Austria) was started.Due to difficulties in getting peripheral venous access and to repeated loss of the venous access, continuous subcutaneous infusion of protein C was started with an insulin pump (VEO 754; Medtronic, Mi

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is a rare disorder that is associated with a variety of underlying condition of which liver cirrhosis, malignancy and myeloproliferative disorders are the most common. It is of two types, acute and chronic portal vein thrombosis. Anticoagulation therapy is recommended for all patients with acute portal vein thrombosis. Chronic portal vein thrombosis is characterised by the development o f portal hypertension. Bleeding from ruptured varices is the main complication. In the absence of bleeding, continuous anticoagulation therapy should be considered for chronic porta

Myocarditis and dilated cardiomyopathy is characterized by dilatation of all four cardiac chambers and decreased systolic function of the heart, especially in the left ventricle. In this report we presented a patient with myocarditis or dilated cardiomyopathy and deficiency of protein C and protein S with biventricular multiple intracardiac thrombi. Standard heparin infusion and acetyl salicylic acid was begun. On the 10th day of hospitalization the right ventricular thrombus disappeared, and on the 24th day all thrombi in the left ventricle disappeared. During the treatment we did not observe

Homozygous protein C deficiency or homozygous protein S deficiency are rare genetic diseases with catastrophic and fatal purpura fulminans-like or thrombotic complications occurring during the neonatal period. These diseases can now be successfully treated. Purpura fulminans is at least in part a cutaneous manifestation of the syndrome of systemic DIC. It is characterized by microvascular thrombosis in the dermis followed by perivascular hemorrhage, necrosis, and minimal inflammation. Laboratory findings are consistent with DIC. Although the pathogenesis is not fully understood, the DIC in pur

A 43-year-old hypertensive male presented with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and constipation due to Protein C deficiency with lupus anticoagulant. CT angiography revealed thrombotic occlusion of mesenteric arteries with collateral circulation. Conservative management with dual anticoagulation and parenteral nutrition achieved clinical improvement without surgery, highlighting thrombophilia's role in mesenteric ischemia.

Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS), a rare vascular disorder of the liver characterized by obstruction of hepatic venous outflow, has an estimated prevalence of approximately 1 in 100,000 in the general population. Among its various etiologies, coagulation factor deficiencies are uncommon. This case, following Case Report (CARE) guidelines, describes a case of BCS associated with protein C deficiency resulting in a thrombus in the inferior vena cava. The patient was an unmarried Indian woman in her 40s who presented with progressive pedal edema and abdominal distension for 6 months. She was evaluated

Protein C is one of the most important factors that prevent blood from clotting. Protein C deficiency usually leads to venous thrombosis. We intend to report a male of 38 years admitted in coronary care unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, who suffered recurrent episodes of myocardial infarction, whose traditional risk factors were well controlled. Ultimately he was diagnosed with protein C deficiency, which is not commonly implicated in arterial thrombosis. Protein C deficiency can rarely cause severe life threatening arterial thrombosis, like myocardial infarction. Many more cases are rep

Portal vein thrombosis (PVT) is the most frequent cause of hypertension portal extrahepatic. It is a rare disorder an the main risk factors are cirrhosis, hepatobiliary malignancies and prothrombotic disorders, which have been identified as major risk. Therapy with anticoagulants must to be considered in acute portal thrombosis or chronic one and proven hypercoagulability. We present the case of a twenty-nine years old patient, with extrahepatic portal hypertension secondary to portal and splenic vein thrombosis, who was diagnosed because of splenomegaly and a coagulation disorder. A protein C

Thromboangiitis obliterans is a segmental obliterating inflammatory arteritis, usually found in young (below 40) smoking males. Its diagnosis relies on patient history, clinical features, arterial angiography, and more rarely on pathological findings, though none of these is specific of the disease, and on the absence of other diseases such as early atheroma, thromboembolic processes, vascular malformation, trauma, collagen or blood disorders. Raynaud's phenomenon, digital arteritis, superficial and often migrating venous thromboses are further arguments for the disease. However, such associat

We report the occurrence of livedo reticularis in a patient with symptomatic hereditary type 1 protein C deficiency. Antithrombin III deficiency and the antiphospholipid syndrome may also be associated with livedo reticularis, and we suggest that a thrombophilia screen may be a useful investigation in a patient with otherwise unexplained livedo, particularly if there is a personal or family history of thromboembolism.

A 29-year-old woman experienced unexplained intrauterine fetal death (IUFD) three times, at 16, 27 and 27 gestational weeks. She was found to be protein C-deficient and the existence of infarction in the placenta was suspected at 20 weeks' gestation during her fourth pregnancy. Both heparin and antithrombin III were administered until delivery of a small-for-dates but live baby. Massive infarction in the placenta was evident at term. Anticoagulation with heparin is a useful treatment approach for cases of recurrent IUFD with protein C deficiency.

We have described the case of a patient with a renal thrombosis and renal infarction associated with cocaine use and protein C deficiency. We propose that patients with similar presentations receive a thorough evaluation for a hypercoagulable state, including protein C levels. Once the diagnosis is made, immediate intervention is required to protect renal function.

Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent anticoagulant glycoprotein that inhibits activated factors V and VIII once activated by thrombin while promoting fibrinolysis. Patients with homozygous protein C deficiency generally present shortly after birth with purpura fulminans, retinal hemorrhage, and signs of the central nervous system or renal thrombosis. This case reports the first case of homozygous protein C deficiency in the UAE successfully treated with liver transplantation. This article aims to emphasize the importance of early diagnosis of neonatal purpura fulminans based on clinical presenta

Protein C deficiency is a hereditary disorder that increases the risk of thrombotic events but has unclear effects on rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) analysis. A man in his 60s with a history of protein C deficiency and multiple thrombotic events underwent inferior vena cava (IVC) filter removal, iliocaval thrombectomy and infrarenal IVC placement for IVC-related complete iliocaval and common femoral vein thromboses. A ROTEM analysis showed normal coagulation in NATEM and EXTEM and only a slight shortening in A10 and A20 in INTEM, which was unexpected given his diagnosis of protein C def
