Infections of the urinary tract have been on the rise globally and these are also worsened by the increasing rate of antibiotic resistance in uropathogens. This study aimed to determine the susceptibility profile of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)- producing uropathogens to selected antibiotics and their carriage of ESBL genes. Bacterial uropathogens were obtained from the urine bench of a Microbiology laboratory in a Teaching Hospital in South-West Nigeria. Susceptibility to antibiotics was tested using the disc diffusion method, while detection of ESBL production was done using the doub

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are major healthcare problems that are usually treated empirically. However, antimicrobial resistance has been increasing across many settings. This study aims to elucidate the antibiotic resistance profiles of three common uropathogens, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae), and Proteus mirabilis (P. mirabilis) and compare between extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and non-ESBL strains among Lebanese patients. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at multiple tertiary healthcare centers in South Lebanon, be

Among undesirables in treating certain infections and diseases is the contamination of catheters, especially of the microbes' resistance to drugs. The situation has necessitated the search for alternative antimicrobial agents. Bacteriocin category, antibiotic-originate, peptide-natured, Ralstonia mannitolilytica microbes-produced, bacteriocin material, and the semi-pure bacteriocin capped silver metal nanoparticles (AgNPs) were used for combating the MDR (multi drug resistance) organism, Proteus mirabilis, which is the third-most common cause of UTI (urinary tract infection), and that is linke

Sensitivity of 130 Proteus clinical strains was studied. Among beta-lactam antibiotics cefotaxime showed marked advantages with respect to various Proteus species. All the isolates of Proteus mirabilis were sensitive to cefuroxime. Cefamezin and cephapirin were inferior by their activity to cefotaxime and cefuroxime. They were characterized by close antibacterial activity and almost complete cross resistance. Ampicillin and carbenicillin proved to be the least efficient among the tested beta-lactam antibiotics. Isolates of Proteus vulgaris and Proteus penneri were more resistant to the penicil

BACKGROUND: Proteus spp. have long been recognized for their role in urinary tract infections, while recent evidence disclosed their implications in gastrointestinal diseases. Despite this, the taxonomy of clinically-derived Proteus spp., particularly those from gastrointestinal samples, remains understudied and is frequently mis-assigned, which limits our understanding of infections caused by these species.
RESULTS: Four Proteus strains (i.e., DFP240708, LHD240705, TSJ240517 and WDL240414) were isolated from the appendiceal pus of patients with acute appendicitis, whole-genome average nucleo

Proteus species are Gram-negative, highly motile opportunistic pathogens belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae and are widely distributed in the environment, including the human digestive tract and animals. Among them, Proteus mirabilis is the most clinically significant species and is commonly associated with catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), wound infections, gastrointestinal disorders, and other nosocomial infections. The pathogenicity of Proteus is attributed to several virulence factors, including swarming motility, urease production, fimbriae, adhesins, hemolysi

Antibiotics not only support to alleviate the infections but also facilitate to avert the multiplication of microbes. Due to the irrational use of antibiotics, the resistance of antibiotics has been augmented which results may increase in morbidity and mortality with the span of time. World renowned regulatory bodies like Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and World Health Organization (WHO) vigorously advocate the surveillance of the resistance of antibiotics. During the present study by Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method 141 clinical isolates o

Fluroquinolone resistance among the Enterobacteriaceae including Proteus spp. is a serious public health problem as it is used for treating many clinical infections including UTI and intra-abdominal infections. Now-a-days, plasmid- mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) has presented with considerable attention that can spread from one bacterium to another. So, the aim of this study was to detect the presence of qnr type (qnr A, B, D and S) and aac(6́)-Ib-cr genes among clinical isolates of ciprofloxacin resistance Proteus species .This cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of

Proteus mirabilis, a gram-negative bacterium commonly known for causing urinary tract infections (UTI) can rarely present with central nervous system (CNS) infections. Proteus mirabilis CNS infections are usually encountered in the neonatal and infantile period and occasionally cause brain abscesses. It is an uncommon cause of adult CNS infection. We report the first case of a community-acquired Proteus mirabilis meningitis (PMM) in a patient with Proteus mirabilis UTI, urolithiasis, and bacteremia. Risk factors for gram-negative bacillary meningitis (GNBM) include extremes of age, cancer hist

Proteus mirabilis is a Gram-negative uropathogenic bacterial species responsible for many catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). Due to the growing rates of antimicrobial resistance among CAUTI pathogens, novel antimicrobial solutions are urgently needed. Bacteriophage endolysins are an emerging class of antimicrobial agents, but no endolysins from P. mirabilis phages have been reported to date. Here, we describe two new Proteus phage endolysins, LysPM1 and LysPM2, containing Peptidase_M15_3 and CHAP domains, respectively. We experimentally confirmed their antibacterial activit

BACKGROUND: Proteus spp. are widespread in the environment and comprise a part of the normal flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. Only six species in this genus, including Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus terrae, Proteus penneri, Proteus hauseri, and Proteus faecis, have been isolated from human clinical specimens. However, there are no reports of Proteus alimentorum isolated from humans, and the clinical characteristics of P. alimentorum infection are unknown.

Proteus mirabilis is a very common gram-negative facultative anaerobe seen in urinary tract infections. This rod-shaped bacterium tends to cause urolithiasis via its ability to alkalinize the urine. However, in some cases, this bacterium has been shown to cause bacteremia as well as other complicated infections. Here we would like to present a rare case of Proteus mirabilis that has invaded the brain in a patient that has a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placed due to coccidioidal meningitis causing hydrocephalus. We would also like to discuss the importance of the monitoring of VP shunt and

The records of the 1980 national prevalence survey of infection in hospitals were re-assessed from a microbiological point of view. Of 407 records of Escherichia coli, 71 per cent came from the urinary tract while the commonest source of Staphylococcus aureus was from skin infections. These yielded only 41 per cent of the 303 records. Proteus spp. were recorded 166 times, Pseudomonas spp. 115 times and Klebsiella spp. 101 times. These came mainly from the urinary tract but other sources were important. Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and the viruses

Over a 6-year period (1997 to 2002), 56 strains of Proteus mirabilis (12% of the total number of P. mirabilis isolates obtained) resistant to ampicillin, piperacillin, cefazolin and cefoperazone by routine antimicrobial testing method, were isolated in Saitama Medical School Hospital. Of the 56 strains resistant to 4 beta-lactams, 12 strains were studied and were found to produce extended-spectrum beta-lactamases, identified as CTX-M-10 group and Toho-1 group in 8 and 2 strains, respectively. Susceptibility testing showed that 12 strains were resistant to cefotaxime, and cepodoxime, and ceftri

Proteus penneri, formerly P. vulgaris biogroup 1, was recognized as a new species in 1982. This species is associated with clinical processes similar to those involving P. mirabilis and P. vulgaris and expresses similar pathogenic determinants. In clinical samples, P. penneri is mainly isolated from urine (50%), wound and soft tissue exudates (25%), and blood cultures (15%), mostly of nosocomial origin. Although P. penneri is easy to identify, it can be misidentified as P. vulgaris by automatic systems that do not include the indol test result in the identification process. This species has a

INTRODUCTION: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria like Proteus species have led to more prolonged hospitalizations, fewer care choices, higher treatment costs, and even death. The present study aims to evaluate the prevalence of MDR Proteus species in clinical samples and to suggest the best therapeutic options for the MDR Proteus species.
METHODOLOGY: Clinical samples were collected randomly from five hospitals in Golestan Province, Iran, from February 2017 to July 2019. Disk diffusion on Mueller-Hinton agar plates were used to perform antibiotic susceptibility testing (ASTs). By using a doub

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are of great concern in both developing and developed countries all over the world. Even though the infections are more common in women and children, they are at a considerable rate in men and of all ages. The uropathogens causing the infections are spread through various routes. The treatment generally recommended by the physicians is antibiotic usage. But, most of the uropathogens have evolved antibiotic resistance mechanisms. This makes the present situation hectic in control and prevention of UTIs. The present study aims to illustrate the multidrug resistanc

A new direction of research was established due to biofilms' infections caused by a mixture of fungal and bacterial species. Diagnosis of these infections becomes more difficult and high doses of drugs are used in treatment, especially in critically ill patients. The aim of the current study was to examine the effects of amphotericin B, in combination with imipenem or colistin against Candida albicans - Acinetobacter baumannii- Proteus mirabilis and Candida tropicalis - Acinetobacter baumannii -Proteus mirabilis polymicrobial biofilms.
