Mononuclear cell infiltration of the central nervous system and ganglioneuritis are characteristic histopathological findings of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) caused by parrot bornavirus (PaBV) infection. The purpose of this study was to clarify the link between the degree of inflammatory lesions and the distribution of the virus antigen in naturally PaBV-infected parrots. Pathological examination was performed on 18 PaBV-infected birds identified by reverse transcriptase-PCR. Dilatation of the crop, proventriculus, and ventriculus was observed in all 18 (100%) birds, and dilation of

Increased morbidity and mortality occurred in a 5-wk-old broiler breeder replacement pullet flock. The affected broiler pullet flock was housed on the first floor of a two-story confinement building. Mortality increased to 0.1%/day compared to the flock on the second floor, which had mortality levels of less than 0.01%/day. Clinical signs in the affected chickens included inactivity, decreased response to stimuli, and anorexia. No respiratory or neurologic signs were observed. On necropsy, affected pullets were dehydrated and emaciated and had disseminated variably sized single or multiple het

Experiments have shown that the block of proventriculus develops in 1.1 to 1.5% of individuals of the flea Neopsylla abagaitui infected with plague microbe. These insects transmit the agent during bloodsucking to different plague carriers (Citellus dauricus, C. undulatus, Meriones unguiculatus, Microtus gregalis). The plague microbe is preserved in fleas for 65 days (the observation period).

Transmissible Viral Proventriculitis (TVP) is a disease of chickens which contributes to significant production losses. Recent reports indicate the role of chicken proventricular necrosis virus (CPNV) in the development of TVP. However, the relationship between CPNV and TVP is inconclusive and it has been addressed in just a few reports. Given the above, a study was conducted to identify the relationship between TVP and CPNV prevalence in broiler chickens in Poland. The study was carried out on 35 proventriculi samples sent for histopathological (HP) examination to the Faculty of Veterinary Me

Rapeseed proteins are described to be poorly digestible in chickens. To further identify some molecular locks that may limit their use in poultry nutrition, we conducted a proteomic study on the various chicken digestive contents and proposed an integrative view of the proteins recruited in the crop, proventriculus/gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, and ileum for digestion of rapeseed by-products. Twenty-seven distinct rapeseed proteins were identified in the hydrosoluble fraction of the feed prior ingestion. The number of rapeseed proteins identified in digestive contents decreases throughout the di

Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) is an important infectious poultry disease worldwide that is caused by avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV). However, to date, the dynamic distribution of AEV in quails has not been well described. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays were used to investigate the dynamic distribution and tissue tropism of AEV in experimentally infected Korean quail. AEV was detected in the cerebrum, cerebellum, proventriculus, intestine, liver, pancreas, spleen, bursa, lung and kidney as early as 3 days post-infection (dpi). T

The Drosophila compound eye is an attractive system for unraveling how tissues are specified and patterned. Puli et al. recently demonstrated that eye size and spacing are controlled by the defective proventriculus (dve) gene. This impacts our understanding of hypertelorism, a disorder associated with mutations in special AT-rich binding protein 1 (SATB1), the human ortholog of Dve.

A female Golden Eagle died despite intensive treatment after being struck by a vehicle. Necropsy revealed poor body condition, with no fat stores. The proventriculus and ventriculus contained a pellet of fur and bone fragments, at the center of which was the leg of a Red-Tailed Hawk. A talon on the leg had punctured the ventriculus, resulting in fatal pleuritis and peritonitis.

We describe an unusual case of proventriculitis associated with Cryptosporidium baileyi in a 7-wk-old snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus) chick kept at a zoo. Necropsy of this animal revealed diffuse mucosal thickening of the proventriculus. Subsequent histopathological examinations of the proventriculus showed marked ductal epithelial hyperplasia with intestinal metaplasia and severe inflammatory cell infiltration in the lamina propria and submucosa. These lesions were associated with numerous periodic-acid-Schiff-positive cryptosporidia-like protozoan parasites. Moreover, oocysts found within the la

Candidiasis was experimentally produced in young Japanese quail by oral administration of Candida albicans cells. Lesions were confined to upper digestive tract with most characteristic changes occurring on the mucosa of crop. No lesions were observed in other tissues of the body. The initial changes in the crop were characterized by thickening and yellowish-white necrotic plaques on the mucosa. From 10th day onwards, there was marked thickening and corrugations of the crop mucosa giving it a typical 'turkish towel' appearance. Varying degree of mucosal swelling was also observed in the oesoph

Marek's disease caused by Marek's disease virus (MDV) serotype 1 is an economically important neoplastic disease of poultry. Diagnosis of this disease is usually based on clinical signs, postmortem lesions, and diagnostic tests like cytology, histopathology, and molecular-based methods. However, there might be the problem of inaccurate diagnosis in Nigeria. Employment of gross pathology, histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) coupled with sequence analysis provides a reliable approach to arrive at precise confirmatory diagnosis of the disease. Therefore, visc

Parrot bornaviruses (PaBVs) are the causative agents of proventricular dilatation disease, however key aspects of its pathogenesis, such as route of infection, viral spread and distribution, and target cells remain unclear. Our study aimed to track the viral spread and lesion development at 5, 10, 20, 25, 35, 40, 60, 80, 95 and 114 dpi using histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and RT-PCR. After intramuscular inoculation of parrot bornavirus 2 (PaBV-2) in the pectoral muscle of cockatiels, this virus was first detected in macrophages and lymphocytes in the inoculation site and adjacent nerves

Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin, 1789) (Aves: Phalacrocoracidae) is one of the few piscivorous birds inhabiting freshwater and saline environments, being considered one of the most abundant aquatic species in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, especially along the state's coastline. It is known that birds are hosts to a wide variety of disease-causing agents, among them, nematodes of the Contracaecum (Anisakidae) have a large number of recognized species. However, little is still known about the occurrence of these parasites in the Southern region of Brazil. Herein we identified for the first time C

The occurence of the human and rat epidermal SH-protease inhibitors in various human and rat tissues was studied by double radial immunodiffusion against specific antisera to the inhibitors. An immunoreactive protein was found in the extracts prepared from human and rat epidermis and from eosophageal and vaginal squamous epithelia, and from rat pro-ventricular squamous epithelium. No immunoreactive protein was found in man or rat in any other of their tissues, studied by us. The results strongly suggest that a protein reminiscent of the human or rat epidermal SH-protease inhibitor is present i

In a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design, the effects of dietary non-phytate phosphorus (NPP) levels, 0.17% (low) and 0.33% (moderate), diet moisture (dry and wet), and diet particle size (coarse and fine), were studied on egg production, characteristics of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and tibia, digesta pH, and phytase activity in layer pullets (16 to 28 wk of age). The low NPP diet increased average daily water intake (ADWI) to ADFI ratio (4.2%) from 16 to 17 wk, but decreased this ratio (2.8%) from 23 to 27 wk. It decreased ADFI (1.5%) and egg mass production (3.8%) from 19 to 22 wk. It decreased eg

Macrorhabdosis is a contagious fungal gastrointestinal disease of birds, that predominantly affecs the proventriculus of budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus). Although the pathological features of Macrorhabdus ornithogaster infection have been extensively described, information regarding local inflammatory cytokine responses in naturally infected birds remains limited. In the present study, archival gastrointestinal tissues obtained from 25 budgerigars naturally infected with M. ornithogaster and 5 non-infected controls were evaluated histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Newcastle disease (ND) is an infectious, highly contagious and lethal disease of avian species. It is considered that ducks are natural reservoir or carrier for Newcastle disease virus (NDV) and are resistant against different strains of NDV. Current study was designed to evaluate the pathogenesis of Newcastle disease in domestic ducks through histopathology, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and serum biochemical changes. For this purpose, eighty ducks were reared for 42 days and divided in two groups A and B. Ducks in group A were challenged with (NDV) at rate of 0.1 ml of ELD50 (virus titer 107.32
