[Microbiological control of drug resistance of causative agents in suppurative-septic infections in newborn infants].

Resistance of the main causative agents of purulent septic infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, etc. to 11 chemotherapeutic drugs was studied. The pathogens were isolated from autopsies of 203 newborns who died within 1981 to 1987. Among 2978 isolates belonging to Enterobacteriaceae (2466 strains) and Pseudomonadaceae (512 strains) which constituted 88% of all the isolates, strains with multiple resistance predominated: 90% of the strains resistant to 4 or more antibiotics, 77% of the strains resistant to 6 or more antibiotics and 48% of the strains resistant to 8 or more antibiot

Sustained outbreak of blaVIM-1 harbouring pathogens in an Italian tertiary hospital: Genomic insights into persistence and spreading.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated an outbreak of blaVIM harbouring pathogens lasting over a year, affecting patients in an intensive care unit (ICU) in a tertiary hospital in Bergamo, Italy. To identify transmission routes of pathogens, we combined classical epidemiological investigation with the molecular identification of the mobile genetic elements (MGEs), integrons, and resistance cassettes that could have played a role in the outbreak persistence. METHODS: Short and long reads sequencing were performed. Transmission, resistome, and virulome analysis were conducted, as well as the identificatio

Straw-based compost cultivation disproportionally contributes to the environmental persistence of antibiotic resistance from raw cattle manure to organic vegetables.

Cattle manure, is a reservoir of antimicrobial resistance genes, but the mechanisms by which they migrate from farm to table remain obscure. Here, we chose Agaricus bisporus as a model vegetable to examine such migration and characterized the resistome in 112 metagenomes covering samples from raw manure, composting substrates, rhizosphere, and surfaces of mushrooms. A total of 1864 resistance genes, representing 113 unique mechanisms of resistance, were identified. Monensin treatment on beef specifically enriched fecal resistance genes within Moraxellaceae, but this effect did not persist in d

Distribution of Transferable Antibiotic Resistance Genes in Laboratory-Reared Edible Mealworms (Tenebrio molitor L.).

In the present study, the distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in laboratory-reared fresh mealworm larvae (Tenebrio molitor L.), their feeding substrates (carrots and wheatmeal), and frass was assessed. Microbial counts on selective media added with antibiotics highlighted the presence of lactic acid bacteria resistant to ampicillin and vancomycin and, more specifically, enterococci resistant to the latter antibiotic. Moreover, staphylococci resistant to gentamicin, erythromycin, tetracycline, and vancomycin were detected. Enterobacteriaceae resistant to ampicillin and gentamicin were a

Acute mastoiditis in children: epidemiologic, clinical, microbiologic, and therapeutic aspects over past years.

Recent studies have indicated possible changes in the incidence of acute mastoiditis. A retrospective review of children discharged with a diagnosis of acute mastoiditis was undertaken to describe the epidemiology, clinical presentation, microbiology, and treatment of acute mastoiditis over past years. Demographic historic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected. Eighty-six children (88 episodes of acute mastoiditis) were identified (1 month-16 years) (median 3.3 years). Almost half had a history of middle ear disease; 8% recurrent episodes and 68.2% received antibiotics preadmission, 91

Ultrasensitive CRISPR/Cas12a-Based System for Detection of BlaOXA-1 Gene in Antibiotic-Resistant Microorganisms.

The blaOXA-1 gene encodes an oxacillin-hydrolyzing beta-lactamase of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing microorganisms. The blaOXA-1 gene is found in the resistomes of some Enterobacteriaceae, Morganellaceae, Pasteurellaceae, Moraxellaceae, Aeromonadaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, Yersiniaceae, and Vibrionaceae. Most ESBL detection methods, including those to detect OXA-1-producing microorganisms, are time-consuming, and require specialized equipment and qualified personnel. Here, we report a new CRISPR(Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)/Cas12a-based detection a

The Integrated Management of Sugar-Beet Soilborne Diseases Through Rhizosphere Microbiome Strategies: A Critical Review of Agronomic Evidence and Application Gaps.

Soilborne diseases caused by Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. betae, Aphanomyces cochlioides, and Pythium spp. constrain sugar-beet production worldwide, with yield losses exceeding 50% in severely affected fields. These pathogens frequently co-occur, yet most biological control and microbiome studies address them individually, and recommendations from model crops often fail to translate to sugar beet's distinctive root biology and rotation systems. This critical review synthesises evidence on the rhizosphere microbiome as a plant protection resource, organising the literature by

The cervical microbiota in reproductive-age South African women with and without human papillomavirus infection.

In this study we examined potential associations of HPV infection with the cervical microbiota. Cervical samples were collected from 87 HIV-seronegative reproductive-age Black South African women. Microbiota were characterized by Illumina sequencing of the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. Thirty seven (42.5%) and 30 (34.5%) of the women had prevalent HPV and high-risk (HR)-HPV, respectively. Only 23 women (26.4%) had cervical microbiota dominated by a single Lactobacillus species (L. crispatus (2/87 (2.3%)), L. jensenii (2/87 (2.3%)), and L. iners (19/87 (21.8%)). Th

An enzymatic glucose/O2 biofuel cell operating in human blood.

Enzymatic biofuel cells (BFCs) may power implanted medical devices and will rely on the use of glucose and O2 available in human bodily fluids. Other than well-established experiments in aqueous buffer, little work has been performed in whole human blood because it contains numerous inhibiting molecules. Here, we tested our BFCs in 30 anonymized, random and disease-free whole human blood samples. We show that by designing our anodic and cathodic bioelectrocatalysts with osmium based redox polymers and home-made enzymes we could reach a high selectivity and biofunctionnality. After optimization

Bacterial oxidation of chemical carcinogens: formation of polycyclic aromatic acids from benz[a]anthracene.

A Beijerinckia strain designated strain B1 was shown to oxidize benz[a]anthracene after induction with biphenyl, m-xylene, and salicylate. Biotransformation experiments showed that after 14 h a maximum of 56% of the benz[a]anthracene was converted to an isomeric mixture of three o-hydroxypolyaromatic acids. Nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectral analyses led to the identification of the major metabolite as 1-hydroxy-2-anthranoic acid. Two minor metabolites were also isolated and identified as 2-hydroxy-3-phenanthroic acid and 3-hydroxy-2-phenanthroic acid. Mineralization experiments with

Gut microbiota and gut tissue metabolites involved in development and prevention of depression.

Depression is a prevalent, life-threatening, and highly recurrent psychiatric illness. Several studies have shown that depression is associated with endogenous metabolites and the gut microbiota. However, it is unclear whether metabolites in different gut tissues play a role in the pathogenesis of depression and whether the gut microbiota has an impact on depression. Here, we investigated the metabolic signatures in the jejunum, ileum, and colorectum using metabolomics and explored the influence of the gut microbiota on both the development of chronic variable stress (CVS)-induced depression r

Does Organomineral Fertilizer Combined with Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria in Sugarcane Modulate Soil Microbial Community and Functions?

Soil bacterial and fungal communities are suitable soil ecosystem health indicators due to their sensitivity to management practices and their role in soil ecosystem processes. Here, information on composition and functions of bacterial and fungal communities were evaluated at two phenological stages of sugarcane (six and twelve months, equivalent to the most intensive vegetative stage and to final maturation, respectively) when organomineral fertilizer, combined with phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB), was added into the soil. Organic compost enriched with apatite (C + A) or phosphorite (C

Genetic and phenotypic diversity of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria isolated from sugarcane plants growing in pakistan.

Bacteria were isolated from roots of sugarcane varieties grown in the fields of Punjab. They were identified by using API20E/NE bacterial identification kits and from sequences of 16S rRNA and amplicons of the cpn60 gene. The majority of bacteria were found to belong to the genera of Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and Klebsiella, but members of genera Azospirillum, Rhizobium, Rahnella, Delftia, Caulobacter, Pannonibacter, Xanthomonas, and Stenotrophomonas were also found. The community, however, was dominated by members of the Pseudomonadaceae and Enterobacteriaceae, as representatives of these ge

Decoding the adaptive strategies of versatile diazotrophs to multi-metal(loid) stress in mercury-mining impacted farmland soils.

Diazotrophs are crucial for Earth's nitrogen cycle via biological nitrogen fixation, while also modulating other elemental cycles and exhibiting bioremediation potential. However, their responses to co-occurring heavy metal(loid) (HM) contaminants in polluted soils remain poorly understood. Using combined nifH (encoding nitrogenase) amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, we characterized the taxonomic structure and metabolic potential of diazotrophic community across multi-HM contamination gradients in mercury-mining impacted farmlands (paddy vs. upland). Results identified selenium (upland soil

Culture-dependent bacteria in commercial fishes: Qualitative assessment and molecular identification using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.

Fish contamination has been extensively investigated along the Saudi coasts, but studies pertaining to bacterial pathogens are scarce. We conducted qualitative assessment and molecular identification of culture-dependent bacteria in 13 fish species from three coastal sites and a local fish market in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Bacterial counts of gills, skin, gut and muscle were examined on agar plates of Macconkey's (Mac), Eosin Methylene Blue (EMB) and Thiosulfate Citrate Bile Salts (TCBS) culture media. Bacterial counts significantly differed between species, sources and feeding habits of examine

Some cultural and physiological aspects of methane-utilizing bacteria.

A number of different methane-utilizing bacteria are described and compared with isolates of other investigators. The strains can be divided into three groups based on pigmentation, cell morphology and internal membrane structures. The oxidation of hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, fatty acids, methyl ethers and sugar phosphates by these bacteria was studied. There was much similarity between strains within the same group. Differences between groups as regards oxidative properties could be detected, but these were mainly quantitative and could not be used as taxonomical criteria. In addition,

Differential patterns of antibiotic resistance, virulence, and dissemination risks in floating and sedimented plastispheres.

The plastisphere, a unique ecological niche on plastic surfaces, enriches microbial antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs), posing environmental and health risks. Although aquatic sediment is a major sink for plastic contaminants, the resistance, virulence and dissemination potentials of sedimented plastispheres remain poorly characterized compared to floating plastics. Through investigation of metagenomes from two sites in the Pearl River in China, one of the world's plastic pollution hotspots, we report that water plastisphere showed 2.4 and 3.6 times more ARG and VF

Prospecting cellulolytic bacteria from white grubs (Holotrichia serrata (F.) and Leucopholis coneophora Burmeister) native to Karnataka region.

The gut microbiota of insects plays a pivotal role in digesting food, supplying nutrients, and synthesizing enzymes, particularly those capable of degrading lignocellulosic biomass-a key factor in waste management. In Karnataka, India, the larvae of Holotrichia serrata and Leucopholis coneophora are major crop pests. However, the potential of their gut bacterial communities to degrade lignocellulose has yet to be fully explored. This study aimed to isolate and evaluate lignocellulose-degrading bacteria from these larvae. Seventeen cellulolytic bacterial strains were successfully isolated from
