A morphological study of the ultimobranchial body in the grass parakeet.

As parafollicular cells can be stained by Grimelius' silver impregnation and by lead-hematoxylin, the ultimobranchial body cells, homologous to them, seem to also react positively to these methods. In the present study of the ultimobranchial body of the grass parakeet, mirror-image sections were stained by both methods and compared. While about 50% of the cells reacted positively to both Grimelius' silver impregnation and lead-hematoxylin staining, only about 20% were positive to the former and about 30% were positive to the latter only. This result indicating heterogeneity among the cells of

Islets of Langerhans in the parakeet, Psittacula krameri.

The pancreatic gland of Psittacula krameri is divisible into 4 lobes i.e. dorsal, ventral, third and splenic. The endocrine part is composed of alpha 1-, alpha 2- and beta-cells. The islets are of 4 kinds viz., alpha islets (having alpha 1- and alpha 2-cells), beta islets (having beta- and alpha 1-cells), pure beta islets (consisting of beta-cells exclusively) and mixed islets (with beta-, alpha 1- and alpha 2-cells). The distribution of alpha islets is mostly restricted to the splenic and third lobes whereas the beta islets are found in all 4 lobes. Though the alpha islets are only few in the

Retrobulbar Adenocarcinoma with Subconjunctival Extension in a Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).

A free ranging, fledged common buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found with severe feather damage and left periorbital swelling. Clinical examination revealed a 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm left medial subconjunctival mass. The abnormal tissue extended over most of the left cornea, severely impairing the bird's vision in that eye. Additionally, the left globe was displaced in a temporal direction. Computed tomography revealed the origin of the mass to be retrobulbar tissue. An ultrasound examination of the mass found cystic areas, and a sanguineous fluid was aspirated. Cytological examination of the aspirated f

Paratanaisia infection in wild birds: Histological and molecular characterization, and novel host species.

Paratanaisia spp. is a trematode from Eucotylidae family that parasites kidneys and ureters of many bird species. Epidemiology and histopathology associated with parasitism remains poorly understood in wild birds. The aim of this study was to investigate Paratanaisia-elicited lesions, parasite species identification, and assessment of host species among free-ranging or wild bird species kept under human care. Kidney samples from 196 necropsied free-ranging or captive wild birds from the States of Minas Gerais and São Paulo, Brazil, were included in this study. Parasitism was observed in ten bi

Occurrence of Bacterial and Viral Pathogens in Common and Noninvasive Diagnostic Sampling from Parrots and Racing Pigeons in Slovenia.

Airborne pathogens can cause infections within parrot (Psittaciformes) and pigeon (Columbiformes) holdings and, in the case of zoonoses, can even spread to humans. Air sampling is a useful, noninvasive method which can enhance the common sampling methods for detection of microorganisms in bird flocks. In this study, fecal and air samples were taken from four parrot holdings. Additionally, cloacal and oropharyngeal swabs as well as air samples were taken from 15 racing pigeon holdings. Parrots were examined for psittacine beak and feather disease virus (PBFDV), proventricular dilatation disease

Evisceration as an Alternative to Enucleation in Four Pet Psittacine Birds.

In cases in which vision cannot be restored and the eye is a source of pain, removal of the eye may be indicated. In mammals, enucleation is the most common procedure performed; however, due to the distinct anatomical features of the avian eye, evisceration may be the preferred method in these species. The large globe size and rigid sclera leave the bird with a large sunken eye socket, which may cause the bird to become unbalanced and is not cosmetically appealing. Furthermore, birds have short optic nerves that can be injured due to traction and a thin interorbital septum that can be damaged

Papovavirus infection in hand-fed parrots: virus isolation and pathology.

Papovavirus infection was diagnosed in 44 parrots of at least 18 species exclusive of the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). The birds were 14 days to 4 months old and had been removed from parental care and hand-fed as nestlings. The birds had been unexpectedly found dead after having evidenced no premonitory signs of illness, or they died following a short (12-to-48-hour) period of lassitude and anorexia. In most cases, necropsies revealed pallor, multiple hemorrhages, splenomegaly, and hepatomegaly with multifocal necrosis. Histological lesions included multifocal to diffuse hepatic necr

Subcutaneous filariasis (Pelecitus sp.) in a yellow-collared macaw (Ara auricollis).

Clinical manifestations of subcutaneous filariasis in a yellow-collared macaw (Ara auricollis) included lameness induced by subcutaneous nodule formation, which was attributed to the presence of the filarial parasite Pelecitus sp. Following anthelmintic and corticosteroid therapeutic failure, the problem was resolved by surgically removing the adult worms.

Amikacin therapy for Pseudomonas cellulitis in an Amazon parrot.

Amikacin sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, was used successfully to treat a case of severe Pseudomonas cellulitus in an Amazon parrot. Side effects of polyuria and polydipsia occurred, but resolved without treatment 3 weeks after the antibiotic regimen. Amikacin sulfate was given at a dosage of 0.04 mg/g of body weight, IM, twice a day, based on antimicrobial sensitivity results. Amikacin sulfate is indicated for P aeruginosa cellulitis that is resistant to gentamicin sulfate. Although it is potentially nephrotoxic, it can be used successfully in birds without permanent clinically evident

Metastatic Thymoma in a Scarlet Macaw ( Ara macao ).

A 49-year-old female scarlet macaw ( Ara macao ) was presented with a mass in the cervical region. The bird showed no evidence of pain or discomfort, it swallowed food normally, and its breathing pattern was unremarkable. Results of contrast radiographic imaging revealed a well-demarcated mass in the right cervical region not related to the crop. After surgical resection and histopathologic evaluation, a malignant nodular stage of an epithelioid cortical-type thymoma was diagnosed. One year later, metastasis of the thymoma to the lung was diagnosed and confirmed at postmortem examination. The

Cryptococcosis outbreak in psittacine birds in Brazil.

An outbreak of cryptococcosis occurred in a breeding aviary in São Paulo, Brazil. Seven psittacine birds (of species Charmosyna papou, Lorius lory, Trichoglossus goldiei, Psittacula krameri and Psittacus erithacus) died of disseminated cryptococcosis. Incoordination, progressive paralysis and difficulty in flying were seen in five birds, whereas superficial lesions coincident with respiratory alterations were seen in two birds. Encapsulated yeasts suggestive of Cryptococcus sp. were seen in faecal smears stained with India ink in two cases. Histological examination of the birds showed cryptoco

Castration and testosterone induced changes in the pinealocytes of roseringed parakeet, Psittacula krameri, during different phases of the annual testicular cycle.

The pinealocytes in male roseringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri) were studied following bilateral castration and/or therapeutic administration of testosterone during the preparatory (June-July), progressive (Nov.-Dec.), pre-breeding (Jan.-Feb.) and breeding (March-April) phases of the annual testicular cycle. The responses of the pineal to either treatment were found to be almost identical throughout the investigation. In each reproductive phase, the pineal appeared to be hypertrophied following castration and the effect was reversed by therapeutic administration of testosterone, while hormo

Psittacine Bird Ophthalmology: A Review of Anatomy, Physiology, Diagnostics, and Interventions.

Parrots (Psittaciformes) comprise a large group of approximately 400 species of birds. There are currently no comprehensive reviews of parrot ophthalmology in the peer-reviewed literature. This review describes the unique ocular variations of parrots, including visual ability and anatomic adaptations. A comprehensive summary of ophthalmic diagnostic tests, including aqueous tear measurements, tonometry, conjunctival cytology, conjunctival microbiology, and ocular ultrasonography, in clinically normal psittacine birds is presented. Common ocular disorders of parrots and their treatments are dis

Comparison of Calculated Radiation Delivery Versus Actual Radiation Delivery in Military Macaws (Ara militaris).

The skin and oral cavity are common sites of neoplasia in avian species. Radiation therapy has been described for the treatment of these tumors in birds; however, its observed effectiveness has been variable. One possible explanation for this variability when radiation is used to treat the head is the unique anatomy of the avian skull, which contains an elaborate set of sinuses not found in mammalian species. To compare a calculated dose of radiation intended to be administered and the actual amount of radiation delivered to the target area of the choana in 3 adult military macaws (Ara militar

Avian bornavirus associated with fatal disease in psittacine birds.

Thanks to new technologies which enable rapid and unbiased screening for viral nucleic acids in clinical specimens, an impressive number of previously unknown viruses have recently been discovered. Two research groups independently identified a novel negative-strand RNA virus, now designated avian bornavirus (ABV), in parrots with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), a severe lymphoplasmacytic ganglioneuritis of the gastrointestinal tract of psittacine birds that is frequently accompanied by encephalomyelitis. Since its discovery, ABV has been detected worldwide in many captive parrots and

A 2-year-old sun conure (Aratinga solstitialis) was examined because of acute lethargy and depression. Physical examination revealed severe weakness with ventroflexion of the head and neck and seizure episodes precipitated by handling. Empirical and supportive care was instituted, and serial diagnostic testing revealed no specific diagnosis or etiology. Antemortem test results for West Nile virus were negative. After 2 weeks of a deteriorating clinical condition, euthanasia was elected and necropsy was performed. Gross examination revealed no significant lesions; however, histologic examinatio
