Chlamydia psittaci infection in humans, also known as psittacosis, is usually believed to be an uncommon disease which mainly presents as community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). It is usually sporadic, but outbreaks of infection may occasionally occur. In outbreaks, diagnosis and investigations were usually hampered by the non-specificity of laboratory testing methods to identify C. psittaci. In this study, we use metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis of a family outbreak of psittacosis under COVID-19. Three members of an extended family of 6 persons developed psittacosis

BACKGROUND: Gestational psittacosis is a rare but severe zoonotic infection caused by Chlamydia psittaci. This systematic review aims to evaluate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic challenges, therapeutic interventions, and maternal-fetal outcomes of this condition.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang Data from inception to October 31, 2025. Two investigators independently performed study selection and data extraction encompassing maternal demographics, clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, diagnostic modalities, antimi

BACKGROUND: Human psittacosis, caused by Chlamydia (C.) psittaci, is likely underdiagnosed and underreported, since tests for C. psittaci are often not included in routine microbiological diagnostics. Source tracing traditionally focuses on psittacine pet birds, but recently other animal species have been gaining more attention as possible sources for human psittacosis. This review aims to provide an overview of all suspected animal sources of human psittacosis cases reported in the international literature. In addition, for each animal species the strength of evidence for zoonotic transmissio

Psittacosis marked by liver and spleen involvement and minimal pericarditis was observed in an 18-year-old patient hospitalized for fever of 1 month duration. At admission, there was no other clinical manifestation and the chest X-ray showed no sign of pulmonary involvement. Liver tests revealed cholestasis. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed multiple nodular formations in the liver and spleen, images confirmed on computed tomography. Liver biopsy showed granulomatous with hyperplasia of the Kupffer cells surrounded by healthy tissue. Complement fixation to psittacosis antigen was positiv

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci is an avian pathogen that can cause lethal human infections. Diagnosis of C. psittaci pneumonia is often delayed due to nonspecific clinical presentations and limited laboratory diagnostic techniques.
RESULTS: The MinION platform established the diagnosis in the shortest time, while BGISEQ-500 generated additional in-depth sequence data that included the rapid characterization of antibiotic susceptibility. Cytopathy appeared only in cell cultures of BALF. BALF yielded a higher bacterial load than sputum or blood, and may be the most suitable clinical specimen fo

UNLABELLED: Psittacosis is rare among children and severe cases appear exceptional. We describe a child with psittacosis and multiorgan involvement.
CASE REPORT: T., a ten-year-old boy, was admitted for a prolonged fever associated with meningism. Laboratory tests showed an important inflammatory response, mild renal failure and coagulation disorders. On admission, the chest X-Ray and the cerebrospinal fluid were normal. He rapidly developed shock, acute abdomen, oxygenodependency, pneumonia and bilateral pleural effusion. No improvement was observed after 48 hours of cefotaxime therapy. Hist

Psittacosis is an uncommon source of community-acquired pneumonia but can cause significant morbidity and possibly death if not properly diagnosed and treated. Although it occurs most often among handlers of pet psittacine birds, it can be contracted during poultry processing and other contacts with nonpsittacine birds. Clinical presentation is nonspecific, and history taking is often critical in establishing the diagnosis. All suspected cases should be confirmed with serologic antibody testing. Whenever possible, the source of the infection should be identified to prevent further spread of th

PURPOSE: Psittacosis is an often-neglected cause of community acquired pneumonia (CAP). The limited diagnostic methods for psittacosis pneumonia invariably result in an unfavourable prognosis. Consequently, the early detection of psittacosis pneumonia is crucial. This study aimed to analyse the characteristics, clinical features and treatments of the patients to improve early diagnosis and outcomes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical features and outcomes of 52 cases of psittacosis pneumonia diagnosed with next-generation sequencing (NGS) from January 2022 to Augus

Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular gram-negative bacterium with a unique biphasic developmental cycle. It is a zoonotic pathogen with a wide range of hosts and can cause avian chlamydiosis in birds and psittacosis in humans. The pathogen is transmitted mainly through horizontal transmission between birds. Cross-species transmission sometimes occurs and human-to-human transmission has recently been confirmed. This review provides an updated overview of C. psittaci from the perspective of both avian chlamydiosis and psittacosis. We include the aspects of genotype, host-pathogen inte

Chlamydia psittaci is a zoonotic bacterial infection that most commonly causes mild flu-like symptoms in humans. However, in pregnancy, it can present as fulminant psittacosis associated with systemic illness, disseminated intravascular coagulation, renal and hepatic failure. We describe a case of a veterinary nurse in her 30s who presented at 32 weeks' gestation with rapidly progressive multiorgan failure, with positive, C. psittaci serology. Further history revealed that she had delivered a number of dead lambs in the preceding weeks to her illness, highlighting the importance of a thorough

CLINICAL DATA: Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia is a community-acquired pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci. While severe cases may lead to critical conditions such as respiratory failure, splenic infarction is relatively uncommon. A severe patient with Chlamydia psittaci pneumonia admitted to our hospital experienced a splenic infarction during treatment. Fortunately, the patient's situation was improved after careful treatment. Now, the patient has been discharged. Further exploration of the mechanism of concurrent splenic infarction is required.

INTRODUCTION: Psittacosis, caused by the bacteria Chlamydia psittaci, is primarily a disease of birds that can be transmitted to humans. The clinical manifestations of the disease are wide, ranging from asymptomatic illness to fulminant psittacosis with multi-organ failure. The organism gets attached to the upper respiratory mucosa after inhalation and the majority remain asymptomatic. However, some people may develop symptoms of atypical pneumonia.
CASE PRESENTATION: Psittacosis usually presents with sudden onset fever with chills and rigor, headache, and myalgia. Here we present a case of a

The first documented Dutch case of an ovine Chlamydia psittaci infection concerned a 20-year-old woman in the 26th week of pregnancy, following contact with lambing sheep. She had a severe sepsis and had to be artificially ventilated. Finally, the patient made a full recovery. The preterm born child died directly after birth. The placenta showed an acute intervillitis in which chlamydial antigen was demonstrated immunohistologically. Infection with an ovine C. psittaci was confirmed by sequence analysis of amplified chlamydial DNA from the placenta. Infections with C. psittaci are typically as

A 55-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of high fever, nonproductive cough and dyspnea. Initially she had been treated with cephem antibiotics by a local doctor. However, acute respiratory failure due to severe pneumonia developed. The partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood was 55.5 Torr. Her chest X-ray revealed wide-spread infiltrates with air bronchograms throughout the entire left lung, and pleural effusions were also present in the chest CT scan. Because the patient had a history of the contact with birds, we suspected psittacosis and administered Minocycline immed
