First report of the visceral leishmaniasis vector Phlebotomus martini (Diptera: Psychodidae) in Tanzania.

Phlebotomus martini is a known vector of visceral leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania donovani in sub-Saharan Africa. The disease is known to be endemic in areas of north and south Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Somalia but has not been reported from Tanzania. In this report we present the first documented collection of P. martini and P. vansomerenae in Tanzania. Sand flies were collected using standard dry-ice baited CDC light traps (John W. Hock Company, Gainesville, FL) from five sampling sites in the Arusha and Kilimanjaro regions from 14 to 20 July 2010. Phlebotomus martini was collec

[In vitro insecticidal activity of seed neem oil on Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae)].

Lutzomyia longipalpis is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil. The objective was to evaluate the effect of oil from (Azadirachta indica) neem seeds on eggs, larvae and adults of the vector. The insects were captured in the field and kept in the laboratory at +/- 27 °C and 80% relative humidity. Five treatments with different concentrations were performed using two negative controls (distilled water and Tween 80) and a positive control. The eggs were sprayed with the oil at different concentrations and the number of hatched larvae evaluated for 10 days. Mortality of larvae was ob

Molecular and behavioral differentiation among Brazilian populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

BACKGROUND: Lutzomyia longipalpis is the primary vector of American visceral leishmaniasis. There is strong evidence that L. longipalpis is a species complex, but until recently the existence of sibling species among Brazilian populations was considered a controversial issue. In addition, there is still no consensus regarding the number of species occurring in this complex. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using period, a gene that controls circadian rhythms and affects interpulse interval periodicity of the male courtship songs in Drosophila melanogaster and close relatives, we analyzed the m

Natural infection of Phlebotomus (Larroussius) langeroni (Diptera: Psychodidae) with Leishmania infantum in Tunisia.

Phlebotomine sand flies were captured from an active transmission focus of sporadic cutaneous leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania infantum, in El Kef region, northern Tunisia. Both Phlebotomus perniciosus and P. langeroni were found. Phlebotomus langeroni females showed a statistically significant intradomiciliary dominance (P<0.01 for the 2003 and 2004 seasons) when compared to animal shelters. During the 2003 season, dissection of collected female specimens showed the presence of flagellates within the digestive tracts of two P. perniciosus among 1086 observed, but none in 232 P. langeroni.

Experimental comparison of anthropophily between geographically dispersed populations of Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Lutzomyia whitmani, a major vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil, occupies diverse habitats from the Amazon forest canopy to suburban animal pens. Three mitochondrial lineages of Lu. whitmani ('Amazonian', 'North-South' and 'North-east') have parapatric distributions coinciding with different ecological zones. We assessed the host preferences of populations representing the three lineages in standardized field experiments, and found that Lu. whitmani in all sites were significantly more attracted to humans than to dogs or chickens. Females from a southerly population of the North-South

Optimised dietary regimens for the laboratory maintenance of Phlebotomus langeroni nitzulescu (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The optimal feeding conditions for laboratory colonies of Phlebotomus langeroni, the vector of infantile visceral leishmaniasis in Egypt, were investigated. Sugarmeals were offered only before bloodmeals (the SB regimen), only after blood (BS), or both before and after blood (SBS). In each regimen, three different solutions of sucrose (10%, 30% and 50%, w/v) were tested as the source of sugarmeals. In general, the concentration of sucrose used had no significant effect on female longevity, although the longest lived females were those fed on 30% sucrose. Females on the BS regimen were the long

Using vehicle-mounted nets for studying activity of Arabian sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Vehicle-mounted nets were used on 15 nights in northern Oman to collect 2,216 sand flies. The composition of the catch was compared with that of 100 sticky traps, which were used twice a month over a 15-mo period to collect 3,099 sand flies. Sticky trap catches showed no obvious seasonal change in abundance. The vehicle nets collected up to 260 flies per night, with a mean of 148. This compared with the catch of the 100 sticky traps, which had an overall mean of 115 flies per night. The vehicle nets collected seven species of sand flies (four Phlebotomus and three Sergentomyia). Phlebotomus al

Laboratory infection of the sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi Scopoli (Diptera, Psychodidae) with three Phleboviruses.

Membrane feeding and intrathoracic inoculation techniques were used to infect Phlebotomus papatasi sandflies with Phlebotomus fever group viruses. Sandflies were orally infected with Pacui virus, and were inoculated with Pacui, Sicilian sandfly fever and Naples sandfly fever viruses. Pacui virus did not multiply in these insects after oral infection, but an 8 X 10(4)-fold increase in virus concentration occurred within four days of intrathoracic inoculation of this virus. The infection rate was 100%. Sicilian sandfly fever virus multiplied in P. papatasi after infection by inoculation, althoug

Wolbachia infection and the expression of cytoplasmic incompatibility in sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Egypt.

A PCR-based method was used to screen four laboratory colonies of sandflies for Wolbachia infection. The colonies - one of Phlebotomus langeroni, one of P. bergeroti and two of P. papatasi - were all derived from sandflies collected in Egypt. Only one of the colonies, derived from P. papatasi collected in Sinai, was found infected. The sequence of the PCR product for this colony was identical to that previously reported for the Wolbachia in P. papatasi from Israel. The induction with tetracycline of cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) in flies from the P. papatasi (Sinai) colony was then investig

Midgut pH profile and protein digestion in the larvae of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae).

The sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis is the vector of Leishmania infantum, the etiological agent of American visceral leishmaniasis. Despite its importance, until now the internal anatomy of the immature forms has never been described and little is known about their digestive processes. In nature, sand fly larvae feed on organic detritus in the soil, constantly ingesting large amounts of material. The objective of this study was to describe the anatomy of the gut and the pH of the gut lumen, as well as to investigate the proteases responsible for protein digestion. The larvae have a short gut wi

Rearing and colonization of Lutzomyia evansi (Diptera: Psychodidae), a vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Colombia.

The sandfly Lutzomyia evansi from a focus of visceral leishmaniasis in northern Columbia was reared and maintained under laboratory conditions for five generations. The average time for total development was 41.9 days (range = 35.1-49.6) at 25 degrees C and 89-95% of relative humidity. The mean number of eggs laid was lower in laboratory bred females either in pots (13.2 eggs/female) or vials (29.9 eggs/female) than in wild caught females (33.4 eggs/female). Immature mortality, mainly due to fungal and mite contamination, was higher during the first two instars than in the remaining immature s

[Findings of Phlebotominae (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the southern coast of the State of São Paulo, Brazil].

Five species of phlebotomine sandflies were caught on the Southern part of the coast of S. Paulo, Brazil. CDC-light and Shannon traps were used, as well as human-bait, during two investigations into Culicidae mosquitoes. Lutzomyia intermedia and L. flaviscutellata were found among those sandflies. The localities investigated were swampy environments and scant human cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis have been notified there. Both situations suggest the autochthonous nature of the human cases registered there.
