Rental assistance, housing insecurity, & well-being: Spillover effects of emergency rental assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic threatened to exacerbate housing insecurity among renters in the United States, with spillover effects on mental health and non-housing material hardships such as food insecurity. As one response to the potential crisis, the federal government implemented the $47 billion Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA) to stabilize rental housing through aid to vulnerable renter households. This study evaluates impacts of ERA on two non-housing outcomes, food insufficiency and psychological distress, using data from the Household Pulse Survey fielded by the U.S. Census Bureau. W

Prolonged lockdown: psychological risk factors among children and their mental health.

The most talked phenomenon and sui generis of the modern time, the coronavirus diseases-2019 impacted individuals in a variety of ways. Older adults had a higher risk of vulnerability, while there were negative ramifications among children due to indirect impact. The preventive measures, including closing down of schools, malls and playgrounds as well as practising social distancing served as a shield against the hazard of outbreak. On the contrary, these strategies inculcated fear, anxiety, ambiguous communication and manifestation of externalizing behaviours in children. Children living in d

[Psychologically traumatized patient on a general practitioner's consultation].

Psychologic first aid and active observation ("watchful waiting") provided by a general practitioner will usually suffice as therapy for acute stress reaction and disorder. Drug therapy should be considered only with caution. If trauma-related symptoms become prolonged, developing into a post-traumatic stress disorder, the general practitioner can continue to carry the responsibility for the treatment and follow-up, even though the psychotherapeutic treatment would be provided elsewhere. The first-line treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder is trauma-oriented therapy in its various forms.

Otolaryngologic aspects of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Currently, most patients with AIDS present with a manifestation involving the head, neck, or respiratory tract. The otolaryngologist may be the first physician to evaluate the patient with HIV infection and, therefore, must be aware of the various manifestations. The otolaryngologist may also be involved in diagnosing and managing the disease through modalities such as biopsy, endoscopy, tracheotomy, and other surgical procedures. In all phases of care, it is important to retain a medically appropriate and psychologically supportive environment. Although universal precautions should be followe

Vulnerable populations in Thailand: giving voice to women living with HIV/AIDS.

Thailand was the first Asian country hit by the AIDS epidemic, and in the 1990s reported the fastest spread of HIV/AIDS in the world. According to Thailand's Ministry of Public Health, women, primarily between the child-bearing ages of 15 and 49, are increasingly becoming infected with HIV. A number of factors contribute to the increasing AIDS epidemic, including the rise of the commercial sex industry in Thailand; social disparities that have existed between men and women throughout Thailand's history; and the gender-expectations faced by Thai women toward family and society. Thailand enjoys

Stress Control for Military, Law Enforcement, and First Responders: A Systematic Review.

Military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and other first responders must prepare for and respond to life-threatening crises on a daily basis. This lifestyle places stress on personnel, and particularly so on military personnel who may be isolated from support systems and other resources. The authors conducted a systematic review of studies of interventions designed to prevent, identify, and manage acute occupational stress among military, law enforcement, and first responders. The body of evidence consisted of 38 controlled trials, 35 cohort comparisons, and 42 case studies with no c

Self-Reported Hearing Aid Requirements among U.S. Military Personnel and the Association with Probable Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Auditory problems are ubiquitous among U.S. military personnel. Hearing aids are an effective treatment for both hearing loss and tinnitus, two of the most common diagnoses among veterans awarded disability compensation, but the prevalence of hearing aid requirements in the U.S. military is unknown. Another military health problem is posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), an anxiety disorder characterized by exposure to a traumatic event. While some studies have found an association between auditory problems and PTSD, no research has examined the relationship between hearing aid req

Mainstream reintegration of COVID-19 survivors and its implications for mental health care in Africa.

The novel coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly emerged as a serious public health threat in many societies across the world. Due to the sporadic and unpredictable nature of the pandemic, it is important to admit that the virus can cause psychological distress and emotional instability that might impact on people in diverse ways at the individual, community and national levels, with serious mental health implications (e.g. depression, mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, other anxiety disorders). Due to the weak healthcare challenges inherent in Africa, these mental health challenges

Psycho-Socio-Cultural Determinants of Delayed Presentation for Specialized Burn Care and Their Clinical Consequences: A Mixed Observational Study.

Background: Burn injuries have both physical and psychological impacts on patients. Factors such as personal beliefs, prior experiences, and geographic, economic, or cultural barriers, as well as fear of hospitals, can contribute to delays in seeking specialized care. When combined with inadequate first aid or the inappropriate use of pharmaceutical or traditional remedies, these delays may worsen burn severity, prolong healing, and negatively affect quality of life. From a clinical perspective, delayed presentation following burn injury has been linked to burn wound progression, which increas

A randomised controlled trial investigating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of Alpha-Stim AID cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES) in patients seeking treatment for moderate severity depression in primary care (Alpha-Stim-D Trial).

BACKGROUND: Major depression is the second leading cause of years lost to disability worldwide and is a leading contributor to suicide. However, first-line antidepressants are only fully effective for 33%, and only 40% of those offered psychological treatment attend for two sessions or more. Views gained from patients and primary care professionals are that greater treatment uptake might be achieved if people with depression could be offered alternative and more accessible treatment options. Although there is evidence that the Alpha-Stim Anxiety Insomnia and Depression (AID) device is safe and

Maxillary Surgical Obturator Following Resection of an Odontogenic Myxoma in a Pediatric Patient.

The treatment of odontogenic myxoma (OM) may result in several oral complications. Although oral and esthetic rehabilitation following extensive resections is crucial, it remains a significant challenge. A 14-year-old Brazilian male patient presented with an OM in the left hemimaxilla, which was associated with bone expansion and facial asymmetry. Oral rehabilitation was planned prior to surgical resection, and the proposed treatment was carried out in two stages. In the first stage, an interim obturator prosthesis (IOP) was fabricated. The IOP played a crucial role in tamponading the oronasal

Psychologic aspects of acne.

Psychologic factors may play a significant role in acne in at least three ways. First, as many patients readily report, emotional stress can exacerbate acne. Second, it is common for patients to develop psychiatric problems as a consequence of the conditions, such as those related to low self-esteem, social phobias, or depression. Finally, primary psychiatric illnesses such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and psychosis may be based on a complaint that is focused on acne. In this review we hope to facilitate an understanding of how emotional factors and acne connect, and aid the dermatologist
