Background: Psychological violence, defined as interpersonal acts intended to humiliate or diminish others without physical force, has been linked to significant psychological suffering. Despite its prevalence and association with mental health disorders, it is not classified as a potentially traumatic event under the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis. Objective: This study examines whether psychological violence, when identified as the index trauma, is associated with PTSD symptoms at levels comparable to

Childhood trauma and discrimination are two experiences that are of particular importance in the development of psychological and physiological problems. The current study aims to 1) identify patterns of childhood trauma and everyday discrimination and 2) explore predictors of class membership and how classes relate to alcohol use, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and pain. Data for the present study come from the 24-month follow-up (N = 937) of a longitudinal study of veteran behavioral health. Latent class analysis extracted classes of childhood trauma and discrimination, and

Breastfeeding is a complex biopsychosocial process influenced not only by biological mechanisms but also by a woman's previous psychological experiences and past traumas. The aim of this review was to analyze current research on the impact of early traumatic experiences, perinatal trauma, psychological difficulties, and previous interpersonal stressors on the initiation, continuation, and emotional course of breastfeeding. Women with a history of trauma are more likely to struggle with emotional regulation difficulties, increased stress, depressed mood, and problems bonding with their child. T

BACKGROUND: Workers in specialist and other high-risk roles can experience secondary traumatic stress and related symptoms through routine exposure to distressing material, yet organisational responses vary widely. Evidence for the effectiveness of commonly used approaches (e.g. screening, training, counselling/debriefing, mindfulness/resilience) remains uncertain and fragmented.
AIMS: To evaluate the effectiveness of mental health screening, training and psychological interventions in reducing psychological harm for employees exposed to potentially traumatic material.
METHODS: Five database

Studies have consistently highlighted a high prevalence of mental health difficulties following exposure to trauma. These symptoms can become even more prevalent if one experiences several traumatic events. This study is the first to explore the interaction effect of age and gender on the prevalence of psychological outcomes, including anxiety, depression, stress, and PTSD, investigating whether the impact of age on psychological health is different across genders. Our sample included 546 Lebanese adults who were exposed to both the 2020 Beirut Port explosion and the 2023 earthquakes. Particip

Psychological trauma has profound effects on brain function and precipitates psychiatric disorders in vulnerable individuals, however, the molecular mechanisms linking trauma with psychiatric risk remain incompletely understood. Using RNA-seq data postmortem brain tissue of a cohort of 304 donors (N=136 with trauma exposure), we investigated transcriptional signatures of trauma exposures in two cortical regions (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex) and two amygdala regions (medial amygdala and basolateral amygdala) associated with stress processing and regulati

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses have faced various nurse-specific traumas in their workplaces, but there is limited understanding of the resulting outcomes and factors that contribute to them.
OBJECTIVE: To address this gap, the study employed the middle-range theory of nurses' psychological trauma (NPT) to examine these relationships among frontline nurses working in critical care areas.
METHODS: In a quantitative cross-sectional study, the study compared nurses identified as probable cases of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with those identified as not probable case

Substance use disorders (SUDs) in nursing have individual well-being, patient safety, and licensure/regulatory implications. Literature is scarce related to predicting SUDs in registered nurses; this study included specific items surrounding nurses' psychological trauma. An online survey, consisting of validated scales and investigator-generated items was distributed to 4,000 registered nurses in Indiana with a yield of 1,478 surveys. The World Health Organization: Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST) was used as the dependent variable to assess risk of SUDs. Thre

Auricular chromotherapy has shown promising results in the treatment of psychologic trauma and anxiety disorders, such as phobias and panic attacks. With its relatively easy and quick technical application, this procedure could be an indispensable tool for physicians. However, its mechanism of action is not yet understood completely. Objective: To treat patients suffering from trauma, phobia, and panic attack with auricular chromotherapy. Materials and Methods: The protocol was applied in 160 patients (135 who experienced traumas; 15 patients with specific phobias and 10 patients with panic di

BACKGROUND: Childbirth is a complex life event that can be associated with both positive and negative psychological responses. When giving birth is experienced as particularly traumatic this can have a negative impact on a woman's postnatal emotional well-being. There has been an increasing focus on women's psychological trauma symptoms following childbirth, including the relatively rare phenomenon of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the benefit of debriefing interventions to prevent this. In this review we examined the evidence for debriefing as a preventative intervention for psych

PURPOSE: To identify predictors of psychiatric problems in women with early-stage breast cancer.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred sixty women with early-stage breast cancer were recruited from three treatment centers. They filled out self-report questionnaires, including a medical history and demographic survey, the Trauma History Questionnaire, Life Event Questionnaire, Brief Symptom Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, and Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire, and were evaluated using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R.
RESULTS: Hierarchical regression analyses i

Posttraumatic stress disorder was diagnosed in two patients, men aged 26 and 29, an asylum seeker from the Middle East and a refugee from former Yugoslavia respectively. They had experienced severe psychotraumatic events. They were referred to a clinic for traumatised refugees and asylum seekers. Their psychiatric disturbances did not fit posttraumatic stress disorder, however. The former suffered from a schizophrenic disorder, the latter from psychosis and depression based on alcohol dependence. Growing awareness of the high prevalence of traumatic experiences in the population leads to a con

Nurses are regularly exposed to workplace traumatic events, including violence, aggression, witnessing patient deaths, and self-harming behavior and suicide attempts. These experiences can adversely affect nurse well-being and can interrelate with personal histories of trauma. Despite this, psychological trauma in nursing remains underexplored. Foli's mid-range theory of psychological trauma (2022) provides a contemporary framework for addressing this gap by identifying 7 types of psychological trauma in nursing practice while incorporating personal experiences beyond the clinical setting. BACKGROUND: Dance therapy is thought to improve mental and physical health by activating psychological and physiological processes such as motor coordination, and expression of emotions. Some currently used mind-body interventions for posttraumatic symptoms address both mental and physical health. Although some studies have evaluated the efficacy of dance therapy for posttraumatic symptoms, a systematic review of extant research has not been conducted.
OBJECTIVES: To identify the effects of dance therapy in adults with psychological trauma as well as the barriers and facilitators associated w

OBJECTIVES: The emergency department (ED) is a valuable setting to initiate intervention to prevent future complications following traumatic injury. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) occurs in 10% to 40% of patients after single-incident civilian trauma. Prior research suggests that young age is associated with increased risk. We hypothesized that other factors correlated with age may be responsible. The aim of this study was to determine if factors identifiable in the ED can better explain the relationship between younger age and PTSD, therefore more specifically identifying those at risk

Management of disaster effects, physical or psychological, has been the subject of considerable research. Though physical rehabilitation of the victims of any disaster, whether natural or man-made, receives immediate attention, the management of psychological trauma often remains a challenge for the disaster management machinery, in general, and mental health professionals, in particular. The magnitude of population affected, on the one hand, and lack of sufficient mental health professionals, on the other hand, often hinders the psychological rehabilitation of a cross section of the affected

Burns pathology is characterized not only by insidious damage to the patients' outward appearance but also by the equally painful emotional difficulties they encounter as they reorganize their identity and their personal history. This exploratory survey, combining research work with medical action, considers the cases of 41 outpatients who were hospitalized and subjected to skin grafting. The patients were recruited through the database of the Palermo Civic Hospital Plastic Surgery and Burns Therapy Operative Unit. The questionnaires were compiled 6 and 12 months post-burn (12 months' observat

Several studies have shown that physical and/or sexual abuse during childhood may lead to the development of obesity later in life. Despite these consistent findings, the mechanism for the increased risk of obesity following developmental trauma is unknown. It has been suggested that psychological dysfunction, including the presence of disordered eating behavior, may account for the added risk of adult obesity. To test this hypothesis, we analyzed the prevalence and severity of different types of early traumatic life events, assessed the presence of co-existing psychiatric disorders and measur

This article investigates the relationships among premigration stresses, nightmares, acculturation stresses, personal efficacy, and depression in a sample of 147 adult Vietnamese Americans. The analysis revealed that premigration stresses, nightmares, and acculturation stresses had significant indirect effects on depression. Acculturation stresses diminish personal efficacy, and a weakness of personal efficacy leads to higher depression. Age, gender, marital status, and English language ability also exert differential effects on premigration stresses, nightmares, acculturation stresses, person
