The psychology of perserverative and stereotyped behaviour.

Many forms of psychopathology in higher animals and humans include the production of maladaptive, repetitive behaviour. Behaviour which is both repetitive and excessive in amount can be described as stereotyped whereas behaviour which represents a restriction of behavioural possibilities without excessive production can be described as perseverative. Both types of repetition can result from pathology in the neural mechanisms which control either the production of motor output or the organisation of behaviour at a higher level. A number of forms of repetitive behaviour can be induced environmen

[Psychogenic voice disorders. Contribution of clinical psychology].

Only a few psychological papers deal with functional dysphonia. Even fewer empirical studies are concerned with the importance of variations in personality and neurotic behavioural patterns that are typical of functional dysphonia. The enumeration of other functional disorders is important. We suggest that difficulties in self-confidence, social competence, and social fear as well as an increase in control of emotions contribute to the genesis of functional dysphonia. In order to reveal the psychological factors in the diagnosis of dysphonia, every phoniatric diagnosis must be supplemented by

Toward a psychology of real-life decision-making.

Understanding human decision-making processes in everyday life is a central, yet rarely addressed, challenge in psychology. Either real-life complexity is reduced by isolating specific aspects of decision-making in highly constrained experimental settings, yielding insights into specific cognitive mechanisms under idealized conditions, or decision-making is studied in real-life contexts, using high-level descriptions of behavior that do not afford fine-grained, process-level insights. Bridging this gap poses a challenge of both measurement and inference. Recent advances in high-resolution trac

Actual Challenges and Future Horizons of Cultural Psychology.

We comment on Aaro Toomela's article Toomela & Quo Vadis, (Integrative Psychological and Behavioral Science 59:75, (2025), in which the author proposes using Piotr Anokhin's model of self-regulating system as a general theoretical basis for the development of cultural psychology. In light of self-regulating systems theory living systems, and social objects appear capable of maintaining homeostasis through accommodation in the context of environmental changes thanks to the predictability of environmental changes for the system. As scientific knowledge advances, great ideas formulated in the pas

Falsification and experimental psychology: examples from face perception.

The present article examines the relationships between the falsification approach as outlined in Popper (1995) and the methodological basis of experimental psychology. In view of this, I will offer suggestions that may reduce somewhat the severity of the following two problems that were raised against Popper approach: The "Duhem problem", and "contradictory-findings disregard", i.e., the fact that scientists tend to ignore findings that disconfirm their theory. These suggestions are based on the development of the "temporary closed explanatory domain" (TCED) model, which describes how the rese

RESEARCH ADVANCES IN CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY OF CHRONIC DISEASES.

Chronic diseases represent one of the most pressing global health challenges, with increasing prevalence due to aging populations and lifestyle-related factors. In recent decades, clinical psychology has played a pivotal role in understanding and managing the psychological aspects of chronic illnesses. This paper aims to synthesize current research on the bidirectional relationship between psychological factors and chronic disease progression, emphasizing recent advances in theoretical models, empirical findings, and clinical interventions. Defensive functioning, alexithymia, and psychological

The Psychology of Esports: A Systematic Literature Review.

Recently, the skill involved in playing and mastering video games has led to the professionalization of the activity in the form of 'esports' (electronic sports). The aim of the present paper was to review the main topics of psychological interest about esports and then to examine the similarities of esports to professional and problem gambling. As a result of a systematic literature search, eight studies were identified that had investigated three topics: (1) the process of becoming an esport player, (2) the characteristics of esport players such as mental skills and motivations, and (3) the

Psychology and public policy: A 50-year adventure.

This article provides an overview of my research on children, families, and the law over the past 50 years, while also providing the context for psychological research and action during this time period. The general framework requires using autobiographical information to understand my primary goal of contributing to a research base for intervention and policy change, especially within the juvenile justice system. Overall, my research and action endeavors have been related to prevention, children, and the legal system with changing foci over time: (a) changing juvenile correctional settings, (

The Psychology of Close Relationships: Fourteen Core Principles.

Relationship science is a theory-rich discipline, but there have been no attempts to articulate the broader themes or principles that cut across the theories themselves. We have sought to fill that void by reviewing the psychological literature on close relationships, particularly romantic relationships, to extract its core principles. This review reveals 14 principles, which collectively address four central questions: (a) What is a relationship? (b) How do relationships operate? (c) What tendencies do people bring to their relationships? (d) How does the context affect relationships? The 14

Treatment of Anxiety Disorders in a Psychology Clinic.

People with anxiety disorders demand psychological attention most often. Therefore, it seems important to identify both the characteristics of the patients who demand help and the clinical variables related to that demand and its treatment. A cohort of 292 patients who requested help at a university clinical facility was studied. The typical profile of the patient was: being female, young, unmarried, with some college education, and having previously received treatment, especially pharmacological one. The three most frequent diagnoses of anxiety, which include 50% of the cases, were: Anxiety D

Recurring errors among recent history of psychology textbooks.

Five recurring errors in history of psychology textbooks are discussed. One involves an identical misquotation. The remaining examples involve factual and interpretational errors that more than one and usually several textbook authors made. In at least 2 cases some facts were fabricated, namely, so-called facts associated with Pavlov's mugging and Descartes's reasons for choosing the pineal gland as the locus for mind-body interaction. A fourth example involves Broca's so-called discovery of the speech center, and the fifth example involves misinterpretations of Lloyd Morgan's intentions regar

Developmental approach to the psychology of craniofacial anomalies.

This article outlines a developmental perspective on psychosocial maladjustment and its implications for the psychological study and treatment of individuals with craniofacial anomalies. A developmental theory of attachment is described and used to formulate hypotheses about the developing parent-child relationship during the first 5 years of life and its influence on the child's subsequent social and emotional growth. Preliminary research involving infants with clefts and other craniofacial anomalies is reviewed with respect to hypothesized points of vulnerability in the attachment process. T

[The psychology and pathology of the pilosebaceous follicle].

The mind plays a dual role in the pathology of the hair follicle: the disease has repercussions on the mind, and the mind in turn may trigger off or exacerbate its course. As all skin diseases, those involving the hair follicles have much to do with vision, and they profoundly alter the images the subjects has of himself (self image) and offers to other persons. Repercussions on the mind are particularly intense with these diseases since they usually occur on the face and during adolescence. It results from these findings that a dual, somatic and psychological approach of the patient is indisp

[Psychology of phobias in relation to dental anxiety].

In this article the most important etiologic factors related to dental anxiety are presented and form the basis for the exposition of a model for the psychologic development of dental anxiety. The model shows that personality factors related to emotion and cognition can influence the development of dental anxiety. In order for the anxiety to develop and become manifest it is also necessary that: 1: the individual experiences a given stimulus as presenting a physical threat, e.g. in the form of pain, 2: the individual has been exposed to an experience or a learning situation involving the stimu
