Systematic review and meta-analyses of psychosocial interventions for veterans of the military.

OBJECTIVES: Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a chronic inflammatory disease, frequently associated with cardiovascular (CV) comorbidities. Our aim was to compare the prevalence of CV comorbidities between two groups of PsA patients from different European countries: Belgium and Italy. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of two longitudinal cohorts in which 803 PsA patients were enrolled (463 from Belgium and 340 from Italy). All enrolled patients were ≥18 years old and fulfilled the ClASsification criteria for Psoriatic Arthritis (CASPAR criteria). For each patient, demographics, clinical

Osteoporosis and quality of life psychosocial outcomes and interventions for individual patients.

Despite the substantial psychosocial impact of osteoporosis, little research has evolved in this area. Early reports conceptualized these nonskeletal problems as psychosocial in nature, but more recent investigations focus on health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Multiple HRQOL instruments have been designed to measure this construct in people with osteoporosis, and each has its strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately, so much investigative energy has been spent on psychometric testing that these instruments have not been put to work efficiently to identify problem areas in HRQOL. It is from

Psychosocial factors associated with engagement and efficacy of mindfulness intervention in the classroom.

BACKGROUND: Mindfulness practice has been associated with a range of benefits in the literature. However, intervention effects show substantial person-to-person variability, and the individual differences underlying this variability remain underexamined. Identifying the psychosocial predictors of the practice can increase our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the benefits of mindfulness practice and inform strategies to increase both engagement and efficacy of it. METHODOLOGY: 66 university students in Singapore were recruited if they had completed a course where mindfulness practice

Psychosocial Interventions and Functional Recovery in Schizophrenia-Realizing Opportunities Today.

Functional recovery has emerged as a critical treatment goal in schizophrenia, extending beyond symptom reduction to encompass independent living, vocational and educational attainment, social integration, and overall quality of life. Despite advances in pharmacotherapy, many people with schizophrenia continue to experience significant functional impairments driven by persistent symptoms, cognitive deficits, comorbidities, stigma, and adverse social determinants. Psychosocial interventions have been shown to be effective in improving functional outcomes but are not extensively utilized. To add

Advancing Methodological Rigor for Psychosocial Aspects of Neuropalliative Care Interventions.

Background: Neurological disorders (NDs) have unique biopsychosocial-spiritual features that impact patients and their families. As a result, the subspeciality of neuropalliative care (NPC) emerged within the past decade and has grown exponentially in research and practice. Given the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral changes associated with NDs, psychosocial components (eg, coping skills) of NPC interventions are essential for improving the quality of life for patients and families. However, psychosocial components of NPC interventions warrant more rigorous testing to improve their evidence

A systematic review of psychosocial interventions for people with intellectual disabilities and dementia.

OBJECTIVES: As the life expectancy of individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) continues to increase, there is an increased risk of developing dementia. While psychosocial interventions are gaining prominence, evidence is limited for people with both dementia and ID. This review discusses the effectiveness of direct psychosocial interventions and adaptations to facilitate delivery within this population. METHODS: The review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Five electronic databases, grey literature, and reference lists of included articles were searched for relevant studies. 10 eligible

Psychosocial interventions for responding to child sexual abuse: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In this manuscript, we summarize the findings of a systematic review that informed the development of the World Health Organization's recommendations related to psychosocial interventions for child and adolescent sexual abuse. METHOD: Systematic searches across 14 databases were conducted to retrieve any published randomized controlled trials of psychosocial interventions addressing mental health outcomes among children and adolescents exposed to sexual abuse who have experienced symptoms. We assessed study risk of bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and certainty of the evi

Therapeutic interventions to lessen the psychosocial effect of vitiligo in children: A review.

Vitiligo commonly affects children, with half of affected individuals experiencing disease onset before the age of 20. Because childhood is a time of advancement in social and psychological development, understanding the extent of the effect of the disease and means of alleviation is crucial. Vitiligo has been shown to decrease children's quality of life, with greater distress in children with highly visible lesions and darker skin tones. This article reviews the literature regarding interventions that have been analyzed in children. Studies evaluating the effect of camouflage, cognitive behav

An evidence map of psychosocial interventions for the earliest stages of bipolar disorder.

Depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder are three of the four most burdensome problems in people aged under 25 years. In psychosis and depression, psychological interventions are effective, low-risk, and high-benefit approaches for patients at high risk of first-episode or early-onset disorders. We review the use of psychological interventions for early-stage bipolar disorder in patients aged 15-25 years. Because previous systematic reviews had struggled to identify information about this emerging sphere of research, we used evidence mapping to help us identify the extent, distribution

Psychosocial interventions for men with prostate cancer: a Cochrane systematic review.

To evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for men with prostate cancer in improving quality of life (QoL), self-efficacy and knowledge and in reducing distress, uncertainty and depression. We searched for trials using a range of electronic databases including the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE and PsycINFO to October 2013, together with hand searching of journals and reference lists. Randomised controlled trials were eligible if they included psychosocial interventions that explicitly used one or a combination of the following approa

Psychosocial, educational and communicative interventions for patients with cachexia and their family carers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer cachexia has a substantial impact on both patients and their family carers. It has been acknowledged as one of the two most frequent and devastating problems of advanced cancer. The impact of cachexia spans biopsychosocial realms. Symptom management in cachexia is fraught with difficulties and globally, there remains no agreed standard care or treatment for this client group. There is a need to address the psychosocial impact of cachexia for both patients and their family carers. RECENT FINDINGS: Patients living at home and their family carers are often left to manag

A systematic review of psychosocial research on psychosocial interventions for people with co-occurring severe mental and substance use disorders.

This report reviews studies of psychosocial interventions for people with co-occurring substance use disorder and severe mental illness. We identified 45 controlled studies (22 experimental and 23 quasi-experimental) of psychosocial dual diagnosis interventions through several search strategies. Three types of interventions (group counseling, contingency management, and residential dual diagnosis treatment) show consistent positive effects on substance use disorder, whereas other interventions have significant impacts on other areas of adjustment (e.g., case management enhances community tenur

Psychosocial interventions for pregnant women in outpatient illicit drug treatment programs compared to other interventions.

BACKGROUND: Illicit drug use in pregnancy is a complex social and public health problem. The consequences of drug use in pregnancy are high for both the woman and her child. Therefore, it is important to develop and evaluate effective treatments. There is evidence for the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in drug treatment but it is unclear whether they are effective in pregnant women. This is an update of a Cochrane review originally published in 2007. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions in pregnant women enrolled in illicit drug treatment progra

Efficacy of psychosocial interventions in men and women with sexual dysfunctions--a systematic review of controlled clinical trials: part 1-the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for male sexual dysfunction.

INTRODUCTION: As yet, a summary of research evidence concerning the efficacy of psychological treatment in male sexual dysfunction is lacking. AIM: Our systematic review gives an overview of the efficacy of psychosocial interventions in all male sexual dysfunctions. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Main outcome measures included, for example, psychometrically validated scales, interviews, and clinical assessment by an independent rater. The efficacy of psychosocial interventions was measured, for example, by the frequency of and satisfaction with sexual activity and sexual functioning. METHODS: The s
