First Results of Peer Training for Medical Staff-Psychosocial Support through Peer Support in Health Care.

BACKGROUND: In view of the increasing strain on health workers, psychosocial support measures are becoming more important. The core of a sustainable concept is the establishment of peer support teams. Two aspects are central: first, target group-specific training content, and second, suitable staff members who are trained as peers. The goal of the study was to obtain a first look at what content can be taught in peer training for medical staff, how the training is evaluated by the target group, and which people are interested in training from peers. METHODS: During the period 2017-2022, Peer

Therapeutic interventions to lessen the psychosocial effect of vitiligo in children: A review.

Vitiligo commonly affects children, with half of affected individuals experiencing disease onset before the age of 20. Because childhood is a time of advancement in social and psychological development, understanding the extent of the effect of the disease and means of alleviation is crucial. Vitiligo has been shown to decrease children's quality of life, with greater distress in children with highly visible lesions and darker skin tones. This article reviews the literature regarding interventions that have been analyzed in children. Studies evaluating the effect of camouflage, cognitive behav

Research in Obstetric Fistula: Addressing Gaps and Unmet Needs.

Although obstetric fistula has likely plagued women since the beginning of time, very little research proportionally exists. This article summarizes the most substantial research on the topic and delineates research gaps and future needs. Existing research demonstrates that access to care is the underlying cause of obstetric fistula and that the first attempt at closure holds the highest chance at success, ranging between 84% and 94%. For simple cases, 10 days of a catheter is sufficient, although what constitutes as simple is unclear. Circumferential fistulas are at high risk for ongoing uret

The need to support caregivers during pediatric bone marrow transplantation (BMT): A case report.

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACTObjective:Pediatric bone marrow transplants represent a medically stressful, potentially traumatic experience for children and caregivers, and psychological support for parental caregivers is paramount to their long-term well-being. However, many medical centers do not have protocols in place to sustain caregiver well-being during these distressing experiences. METHOD: We report on a case of a 10-month-old infant with Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome who was hospitalized for bone marrow transplantation. RESULT: We describe the significant burden that fell upon caregivers during a

Lived Experiences, Social Support Systems, and Coping Mechanisms Among Parenting Adolescents With Depression in Southwestern Uganda: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study.

BACKGROUND: Parenting during adolescence is associated with significant emotional, social, and economic challenges that increase vulnerability to depression and psychological distress. In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent parents frequently experience stigma, school dropout, poverty, weak social support systems, and limited access to adolescent-friendly mental health services. However, limited qualitative evidence exists regarding the lived experiences of adolescent mothers and fathers with depression in Uganda. This study explored the lived experiences, social support systems, and coping mechani

Mental health and psychosocial support for asylum seekers and refugees in Greece: a narrative review of stressors, needs, services, and barriers.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, Greece has received a high number of applications for international protection, creating an urgent need for comprehensive mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) systems for asylum seekers and refugees. Despite its central role in the European migration context, there is currently no synthesis of evidence on MHPSS for these populations, which limits the understanding of inequities in mental health outcomes and access to care. AIMS: This narrative review synthesizes the available evidence on major sources of distress, mental health needs, the landscape o

The feasibility of the draw-and-write technique in exploring the resilience of children orphaned by AIDS.

Worldwide, researchers routinely study children indirectly through adults who act as proxies for such children. The call for researchers to rather study children directly and adopt less intrusive child-friendly methodologies has become louder. The draw-and-write technique is regarded as a less intrusive child-friendly method of collecting data that can be used for this purpose. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative study that sought to establish the feasibility of the draw-and-write technique in exploring the resilience of children orphaned by AIDS. This study involved a convenience

Reframing dementia care in the era of disease-modifying therapies: informational, psychosocial, and systemic insights from Japan.

BACKGROUND: The introduction of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for Alzheimer’s disease has prompted major changes in diagnostic pathways, referral processes, and service coordination in dementia care. Japan, as an early adopter of DMTs within a nationally coordinated dementia-care framework, offers an opportunity to examine how health service structures respond to these changes. This study explored health service–related support needs emerging across the DMT pathway, focusing on patient and informal caregiver experiences, with complementary perspectives from service providers. METHODS: A q

The clinician's role in promoting resiliency for individuals and families with growth anomalies.

Some recent clinic and population-based studies suggest that severe short stature is not associated with significant behavioral and psychological problems, however collectively studies on this topic are variable and frequently contradictory. In light of these contradictory sources, it is important to recognize that there may be some children for whom growth failure is disabling. Many of such children can respond to counseling and support, but there may be occasions in which therapy can be recommended. Resiliency can be defined as a pattern of positive adaptation in the context of past or prese
