How precisely can psychotherapists predict the long-term outcome of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa at the end of inpatient treatment?

OBJECTIVE: To assess the ability of psychotherapists to predict the future outcome for inpatients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Psychotherapists rated the prognosis of the patient's eating disorder on a five point Likert scale on several dimensions at the end of inpatient treatment. Actual outcome was assessed about 10 years after treatment. The sample comprised 1,065 patients treated for AN, and 1,192 patients treated for BN. RESULTS: Psychotherapists' rating of their patient's prognosis was not better than chance for good outcome in AN and BN and for poor out

Perceived Usefulness of Digital Assistance Systems Among Psychology Students and Psychotherapists: Predictors, Barriers and the Impact of a Brief Video Demonstration.

Digital assistance systems based on artificial intelligence are increasingly discussed as tools to address growing demands in mental health care. However, their acceptance among future and practising psychotherapists remains insufficiently understood. In a pre-post online survey, N = 317 participants (predominantly psychology students, with smaller groups of trainee psychotherapists and licensed psychotherapists) completed questionnaires assessing perceived usefulness (PU), work-related stress, technological affinity, professional self-efficacy, data protection concerns and prior knowledge. [Etiological factors in chronic widespread pain and/or fibromyalgia syndrome: subjective perspectives of patients, general practitioners and psychotherapists : A pilot study].

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic widespread pain (CWP) and/or fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) are considered difficult to treat. Various disease models and treatment preferences exist. OBJECTIVE: To assess subjective perspectives on etiological factors, disease models and treatment preferences of patients, general practitioners (GP) and psychotherapists regarding FMS/CWP. METHODS: From December 2019 to February 2020 questionnaires were sent to 88 patients with FMS/CWP from a neurological psychiatric practice in the Allgäu region of Germany and also to 146 GPs and 88 psychotherapists from the di

Trainee psychotherapists' emotion recognition accuracy during 1.5 years of psychotherapy education compared to a control group: no improvement after psychotherapy training.

The ability to recognize and work with patients' emotions is considered an important part of most psychotherapy approaches. Surprisingly, there is little systematic research on psychotherapists' ability to recognize other people's emotional expressions. In this study, we compared trainee psychotherapists' nonverbal emotion recognition accuracy to a control group of undergraduate students at two time points: at the beginning and at the end of one and a half years of theoretical and practical psychotherapy training. Emotion recognition accuracy (ERA) was assessed using two standardized computer

How does burnout relate to daily work-related rumination and well-being of psychotherapists? A daily diary study among psychotherapeutic practitioners.

OBJECTIVE: This is the first study to use a daily diary design to investigate the relationship between daily work-related rumination (WRR), daily well-being, and burnout symptoms among psychotherapeutic practitioners. METHOD: In total, N = 58 psychotherapeutic practitioners participated in the study. For 4 weeks, the participants received a daily evening prompt on weekdays asking about their WRR and well-being. The burnout level of the psychotherapists was assessed using Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) prior to the daily diary period and afterward. The MBI measures the level of work-related d

[Burn-On Instead of Burn-Out: Self-Care and Functional Coping Strategies Protect Psychotherapists from Psychological Stress During the Corona Pandemic].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Due to the Corona pandemic, psychotherapists are confronted with new professional challenges. Regarding the patient care to be provided, the question of risk and protective factors for maintaining well-being during the pandemic appears relevant to prevent negative long-term consequences such as burnout. This is the first study investigating the influence of coping and self-care strategies on the psychological distress of psychotherapists in Germany during the Corona pandemic. METHODS: From April to June 2020, 155 psychotherapists completed an online questionnaire. A

Daring to process the trauma: using a web-based training to reduce psychotherapists' fears and reservations around implementing trauma-focused therapy.

Although trauma-focused interventions are the first-line therapies for patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), they are not frequently used in clinical practice. Factors preventing therapists from applying trauma-focused methods include a lack of training and negative attitudes towards trauma-focused therapy. The aim of the present study was to investigate which factors predict willingness to carry out trauma-focused therapy and to examine whether a web-based training is able to reduce negative attitudes and reservations about these interventions. In a wait-list controlled evaluati

Attitudes Toward Video Consultations From the Perspective of Physicians and Psychotherapists in German Outpatient Care After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Although video consultations (VCs) are permitted in German outpatient care and have seen a notable rise during the COVID-19 pandemic, their use still does not seem to have become established in Germany. OBJECTIVE: This survey aims to evaluate the attitudes of physicians and psychotherapists with regard to the use of VC after the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular in the context of types of treatment and suitable medical fields. METHODS: A standardized questionnaire was sent out to all 34,095 physicians and psychotherapists in 4 German regions. The analysis consisted of both descrip

Therapeutic alliance with psychotherapist versus dietician: a pilot study of eating disorder treatment in a multidisciplinary team during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Little is known about the therapeutic alliance (TA) formed with different professionals in multidisciplinary eating disorder (ED) treatment, particularly in the context of online treatment during the COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to conduct a pilot study during the COVID-19 pandemic examining characteristics of patients' TA with their dieticians and psychotherapists, associations between patients' and therapists' views of the TA, and relationships between psychological characteristics and TAs. Sixty-three patients with EDs and their treating psychotherapists and dieticians were surveyed during t

Effects of providing patient progress feedback and clinical support tools to psychotherapists in an inpatient eating disorders treatment program: a randomized controlled study.

Research on the effects of progress feedback and clinician problem-solving tools on patient outcome has been limited to a few clinical problems and settings (Shimokawa, Lambert, & Smart, 2010). Although these interventions work well in outpatient settings their effects so far have not been investigated with eating-disordered patients or in inpatient care. In this study, the effect of providing feedback interventions was investigated in a randomized clinical trial involving 133 females diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or eating disorders not otherwise specified. Comparisons wer

Prescriber's Preferences for Digital Health Applications in Mental Health Care: Cross-Sectional Best-Worst Scaling Study of General Practitioners and Psychotherapists in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders affect nearly one-third of adults in Germany, with a 12-month prevalence of approximately 28%. Following Germany's 2019 Digital Care Act, digital health applications (Digitale Gesundheitsanwendungen [DiGA]) became reimbursable interventions by the statutory health insurance for mental health conditions. However, adoption remains uneven. General practitioners (GPs) issue most mental health DiGA prescriptions, while psychotherapists or psychiatrists prescribe far fewer, even though most DiGA target mental health. Existing studies imply profession-specific barriers bu

Virtual Digital Psychotherapist App-Based Treatment in Patients With Methamphetamine Use Disorder (Echo-APP): Single-Arm Pilot Feasibility and Efficacy Study.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder is one of the severe public health problems worldwide. Inequitable resources, discrimination, and physical distances limit patients' access to medical help. Automated conversational agents have the potential to provide in-home and remote therapy. However, automatic dialogue agents mostly use text and other methods to interact, which affects the interaction experience, treatment immersion, and clinical efficacy. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this paper is to describe the design and development of Echo-APP, a tablet-based app with the function of a virtual digital psy

Trauma focused-cognitive behavioral therapy training effectiveness in promoting professional development of psychotherapists working with unaccompanied minors in Greece: a non-blinded randomized control trial.

The need to develop psychotherapists' skills to respond to current treatment challenges, such as addressing trauma due to the refugee crisis, is increasing. However, there is a dearth of evidencebased training for psychotherapists who work with refugees, especially in frontline countries. A randomly selected sample of 80 clinicians working with unaccompanied minors (UAMs) in Greek accommodation centers nationwide participated in an intensive trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) training (n=44) or a control-group (n=36) and completed the Professional Quality of Life Scale, the W

Interdisciplinary, Delphi-driven consensus guidelines on the use of intravenous ketamine infusions for depressive disorders from the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners (ASKP3).

BACKGROUND: Off-label use of intravenous ketamine (IVK) for depression is a widespread practice with limited regulation in the United States. There is an urgent need for current, evidence-informed treatment guidelines to facilitate patient safety, clinical decision-making, and care quality in real-world contexts. METHODS: The American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists and Practitioners (ASKP3) convened an interdisciplinary working committee tasked with creating guidelines for use of IVK for depression in outpatient settings. Guideline development followed a two-stage process: 1

Development of Telepresence Among Patients and Psychotherapists in the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model: Longitudinal Observational Study of 20 Dyads From a Randomized Trial on Video Consultations in Primary Care.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of video consultations in mental health care, highlighting the importance of therapeutic alliances for successful treatment outcomes in both face-to-face and web-based settings. Telepresence, the sense of being present with the mental health specialist (MHS) rather than feeling remote, is a critical component of building a strong therapeutic alliance in video consultations. While patients often report high telepresence levels, MHSs express concerns about whether video consultations can replicate the quality of face-to-face interact

Course of mental distress among psychotherapists throughout two years of the COVID- 19 pandemic: individual and inter-relational resources make a difference-cross-sectional and longitudinal results of the VOICE study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed challenges to healthcare systems worldwide. For healthcare workers (HCW), an increased prevalence of mental distress and the impact of various resources have been identified. Psychotherapists specialise in helping people cope with stressful life events. At the same time, they are susceptible to mental distress, resulting from their work. Data on symptoms of depression and the role of resources during the COVID-19 pandemic are scarce for psychotherapists. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the course of self-reported depression of psychoth

Theoretical Orientations and the Stereotype Content Model - Are Prejudices Barriers to Psychotherapy Integration?

BACKGROUND: Despite efforts to integrate psychotherapy, the field remains fragmented into distinct theoretical orientations and practical approaches. Prejudices held by psychotherapists towards those from other theoretical orientations may hinder cooperation in research and clinical practice. This study examines stereotypes among psychotherapists from different theoretical orientations and practical approaches ('psychotherapy schools') towards their in-group and out-group colleagues. METHOD: The cross-sectional online study assessed socially shared evaluations of 'warmth' and 'competence' fro

[On the Admission of Patients with Borderline Personality Disorder to Outpatient Psychotherapy].

BACKGROUND: Patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) present difficulties in self-regulation and interaction, which is a challenge for psychotherapists that is also addressed in BPD-specific interventions. Against this background, outpatient psychotherapists were surveyed about the factors playing a decisive role in their treatment offer for patients with BPD. METHODS: Psychotherapists for adults were contacted via their email address published on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians), 231 of whom answered an online qu

Reproductive health - a blind spot in psychotherapeutic treatment? Evidence of insufficient consideration of reproductive factors in routine care.

INTRODUCTION: Reproductive health impacts mental health. Consequently, reproductive factors should be assessed in psychotherapy to ensure correct differential diagnosis, precise case conceptualisation and efficient treatment. It has not been analysed to which extent psychotherapists assess reproductive factors in routine care. METHODS: Analyses were based on data from Germany-wide surveys with n = 390 psychotherapists and n = 291 patients. From their respective perspective, we examined how frequently psychotherapists proactively assessed whether patients experienced a menstrual cycle, menopau
