Objective: This study examines whether, in panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), interpretations of conflicts that underlie anxiety (panic-focused or PF-interpretations) are specifically associated with subsequent panic disorder (PD) symptom improvement, over and above the provision of non-symptom-focused interpretations. Method: Technique use in Sessions 2 and 10 of a 24-session PFPP protocol was assessed for the 65 patients with complete outcome data randomized to PFPP in a two-site trial of psychotherapies for PD. Sessions were rated in 15-min segments for therapists' use of PF-

OBJECTIVES: Comparing the overall and differential effects of psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) versus cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD).
DESIGN: Patients with a primary SAD (N = 47) were randomly assigned to PDT (N = 22) or CBT (N = 27). Both PDT and CBT consisted of up to 36 sessions (average PDT 31.4 and CBT 19.8 sessions). Assessments took place at waitlist: pretest, after 12 and 24 weeks for those who received longer treatment: posttest, 3-month and 1-year follow-up.
METHODS: Changes in the main outcome measure self-reported social anxiety composite, as

The working alliance is hypothesized to be crucial for facilitating change during psychodynamic therapy. However, few studies have examined the session-by-session effects of the alliance on outcomes within this therapeutic approach. We aimed to test the effect of the client- and therapist-reported alliance on next-session problems/functioning in short-term psychodynamic therapy conducted in a university training clinic. A secondary aim was to test whether baseline personality functioning and adverse childhood experiences moderate the association between alliance and outcome. A total of 152 cli

Psychotherapy is an effective treatment for anxiety disorders (AD), yet a vast majority of patients do not respond to therapy, necessitating the identification of predictors to enhance outcomes. Several studies have explored the relationship between stress response and treatment outcome, as a potential treatment mechanism. However, the latter remains under-researched in patients with social anxiety disorder (SAD). We studied N = 29 patients undergoing psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) within the SOPHONET-Study. Stress reactivity (i.e., area under the curve with respect to the increase; AUCi) w

OBJECTIVE: Depression is a heterogeneous disorder with varying trajectories. The aim of this study was to characterize patterns of change in patients with major depressive disorder receiving cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or psychodynamic therapy (PDT) and examine baseline factors associated with each trajectory.
METHODS: Patients with major depressive disorder (n = 100) were randomized to one of two treatments over 28 weeks: CBT with weekly sessions for 16 weeks followed by three monthly booster sessions or PDT with weekly sessions. Patients were assessed for depressive symptoms with th

BACKGROUND: A recent meta-analysis has confirmed that the effects of psychotherapy on patients with borderline personality disorders (BPD) are still insufficiently understood. Evidence of differences between different types of therapies has been questioned.
AIM: To study repetitive interaction patterns in patients with BPD undergoing either psychoanalysis or psychodynamic therapy.
METHODS: Psychoanalysis (PSA) or psychodynamic psychotherapy (PDT) was administered to 10 patients each, the two groups were matched. Therapy regimens were applied according to care as usual/manualized including qu

This article examined how intensive group cognitive-behavioral therapy (GCBT) and group psychodynamic psychotherapy (GPDT) modified depressive symptoms and processing of social information (hostility attributions in a variety of ambiguous situations). The sample (N = 37) comprised individuals who were attending psychotherapy due to psychological distress (GCBT or GPDT). The study examined how group psychotherapy influences depression symptoms and social cognition. There was a decrease in depressive symptoms after three months of intensive CBGT, but PDGT did not significantly improve symptoms o

This qualitative study examined therapist motivations for providing intensive, long-term psychodynamic psychotherapy to patients with complex mental disorders, their significant experiences, perceptions of treatment outcomes, and connections between motivations and perceived outcomes. Fifteen therapists (psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, and social workers) from a single public mental health project ("Lechol Nefesh") participated. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis, supplemented by ideal-type analysis. Core motivations included profe

In panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), exploration and interpretation of avoided and conflicted emotions and fantasies surrounding anxiety are thought to promote panic-specific reflective functioning (PSRF), which drives panic disorder improvements. Patient emotional expression within a session may be a marker of engaged processing and experiencing of affectively charged material. Degree of in-session expressed emotion, indicating both verbal and nonverbal emotions, was examined across three early therapy sessions for prediction of subsequent outcomes. We further investigated whe

Objectives and Methods. This was an observational study of the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) in a sample of 35 (30 women and 5 men) patients with moderate-to-severe "male depression" (Gotland Scale for Male Depression (GSMD) ≥ 13) comorbid with unipolar mood disorder (dysthymia and major depression) or anxiety disorder. Outcome measures were GSMD and BHS (Beck Hopelessness Scale) score changes from baseline. Results. Patients had a strong response to STPP on the GSMD (estimated mean score change (± SE) = -9.08 ± 2.74; P < 0.01; partial eta squared = 0.50), but not o

UNLABELLED: This article reviews the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) in depression compared to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or behavioral therapy (BT). In this review, only studies in which at least 13 therapy sessions were performed have been included, and a sufficient number of patients per group were treated (N > or = 20). With regard to outcome criteria, the results were reviewed for improvements in depressive symptoms, general psychiatric symptoms, and social functioning. Six studies met the inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: In 58 of the 60 comparisons (97%) pe

Racial inequities within both heart transplantation and psychotherapy access have been well documented. In this report, we describe the case of a patient from a racially/ethnically minoritized background awaiting heart transplantation for whom panic attacks significantly impacted his quality of life and presented a barrier to transplantation. This case illustrates the novel utilization of time-limited psychodynamic psychotherapy exploring racialized health care dynamics as a precipitant to psychological symptoms. We highlight how racialized treatment experiences can contribute to symptoms of p

Abstract Objective. The aim of our study was to observe the outcome of MADD in comparison with depressive (DD) and anxiety (AD) disorders. Method. Patients treated with 12 weeks of group psychodynamic psychotherapy in a psychiatric day care ward were examined using SCAN 2.1 at admission and 1 year after admission. Treatment was indicated on the basis of diagnosis of ICD-10 - F4-F6. A total of 139 patients were included, 110 (79.1%) of whom were examined at the follow-up point. Results. The prevalence of MADD increased from 22.7% at the baseline to 33.6% at the end. The outcome of MADD was stat

BACKGROUND: Cluster-C personality disorders (PDs) are highly prevalent in clinical practice and are associated with unfavourable outcome and chronicity of all common mental health disorders (e.g. depression and anxiety disorders). Although several forms of individual psychotherapy are commonly offered in clinical practice for this population, evidence for differential effectiveness of different forms of psychotherapy is lacking. Also, very little is known about the underlying working mechanisms of these psychotherapies. Finding evidence on the differential (cost)-effectiveness for this group o

Objective: The effects of panic-specific psychotherapy on occupational functioning remain under-researched. This study tests whether two brief psychotherapies for Panic Disorder with or without Agoraphobia (PD/A) may generate improvement in work ability. Methods: Adults (N = 221) with a primary diagnosis of PD/A were randomised to wait-list, panic-focused psychodynamic psychotherapy (PFPP), panic control treatment (PCT), or to the choice between the two treatments. Participants completed the Work Ability Inventory (WAI) at baseline, post-treatment, and during 24-month follow-ups. Change in WAI

OBJECTIVE: There are no studies investigating the efficacy of short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy in primary fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). We conducted a randomized controlled trial evaluating an adapted form of individual short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (ASTPP) versus primary care management (TAU). The study focused on FMS patients with psychiatric comorbidity.
METHODS: Forty-six female patients with FMS and an International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision diagnosis of a comorbid depression or anxiety disorder were recruited in a hospital setting. Participants were randomi

One hundred four clients completed a mailed follow-up 1 year after completing 8 of 16 sessions of treatment, either cognitive-behavioral (CB) or psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) psychotherapy. Although mean scores on outcome measures at 1 year suggested that gains were, in general, well maintained, only 29% of clients were asymptomatic on all 3 occasions of testing (end of treatment, 3 months and 1 year later) without recourse to further treatment. However, only 11% of those asymptomatic at end of treatment experienced relapse or recurrence of depression, albeit on the limited evidence of just
