Religion and Public Health: Intersecting Beliefs and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care Practices in Kashmir.

This qualitative study investigates how local Islamic belief systems shape the lived experiences of stigma, disclosure, and treatment seeking among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) in Kashmir. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 15 PLHIV and four Muslim religious scholars at a major antiretroviral therapy center, and analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, the study reveals that religious values deeply inform individuals' emotional struggles and choices around care. The findings call for culturally grounded, faith-sensitive public health strategies that

Global Neurosurgery in the Context of Global Public Health Practice-A Literature Review of Case Studies.

Neurosurgical conditions are a substantial contributor to surgical burden worldwide, with low- and middle-income countries carrying a disproportionately large part. Policy initiatives such as the National Surgical, Obstetrics and Anesthesia Plans and Comprehensive Policy Recommendations for the Management of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Low-and-Middle-Income countries have highlighted the need for an intersectoral approach, not just at the hospital level but on a large scale encompassing national public health strategies. This article aims to show through case studies how addressing this

Towards elimination of visceral leishmaniasis in the Indian subcontinent-Translating research to practice to public health.

BACKGROUND: The decade following the Regional Strategic Framework for Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) elimination in 2005 has shown compelling progress in the reduction of VL burden in the Indian subcontinent. The Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other stakeholders, has coordinated and financed research for the development of new innovative tools and strategies to support the regional VL elimination initiative. This paper describes the process of the TDR's engagement and contribution to this initiative. METHO

Epidemiology of a tick-borne viral infection: theoretical insights and practical implications for public health.

The morbidity of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) varies yearly by as much as 10-fold among the people of Western Siberia. This long-term variation is dependent on many factors such as the density of the tick populations, the prevalence of TBE virus (TBEV) among sub-adult ticks, the yearly virulence of the TBEV, and prophylactic measures. Here we highlight the role of small mammal hosts in the circulation of TBEV through the ecosystem. Refining classical models of non-viremic horizontal transmission, we emphasize the recently understood fact that the physiological and immunological status of the

[The trans depathologization perspective: a contribution to public health approaches and clinical practices in mental health? SESPAS Report 2020].

Over the last decade, the academic-activist trans depathologization perspective has contributed to a change in the conceptualization of gender transition processes. Observing an interrelation between psychiatrization and transphobic violence, trans depathologization activist groups and allies demand the removal of the diagnostic classification of transexuality as a mental disorder. Furthermore, they have developed trans health care models and legal gender recognition processes based on depathologization and human rights perspectives. They propose changing the role of mental health professional

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis affects approximately 50% of adults in China and is a leading cause of tooth loss in this population. However, there is a notable paucity of research on knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to periodontitis among patients in Northeast China. To RCT or not to RCT: deciding when 'more evidence is needed' for public health policy and practice.

BACKGROUND: Amid the calls for 'more public health evidence', we also need simple understandable methods of determining when more research really is needed. This paper describes a simple decision aid to help policymakers, researchers and other decision makers assess the potential 'information value' of a new public health randomised controlled trial. METHODS: The authors developed a flow chart to help make explicit (1) the user's information needs, (2) the intended use of the new information that the study will produce, (3) the added value of the evidence to be derived from the new study and

Embracing dynamic public health policy impacts in infectious diseases responses: leveraging implementation science to improve practice.

RATIONALE: The host-pathogen relationship is inherently dynamic and constantly evolving. Applying an implementation science lens to policy evaluation suggests that policy impacts are variable depending upon key implementation outcomes (feasibility, acceptability, appropriateness costs) and conditions and contexts. COVID-19 CASE STUDY: Experiences with non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) including masking, testing, and social distancing/business and school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic response highlight the importance of considering public health policy impacts through an implemen

A systematic scoping review of speech and language therapists' public health practice for early language development.

BACKGROUND: There have been calls for speech and language therapists (SLTs) to work within a public-health framework to support language development. Innovative practice is reported, but the range of services remains unknown. Furthermore, the potential impact of public health practice in speech and language therapy on early child development is also currently unknown. A new method in SLT research, systematic scoping reviews enable greater breadth of focus than traditional systematic reviews when identifying innovative practice. AIM: To report scope and critically appraise evidence of family-f

Clinical burden, disease progression, and management strategies in chronic hepatitis B: implications for public health practice.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is one of the most significant global public health issues because it is progressive and has long-term complications, with gaps in real-world management. Longitudinal cohort evidence is required to guide effective disease control strategies. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical burden, disease progression, and management strategies in patients with CHB and to identify factors influencing progression and treatment outcomes in a real-world setting. METHODS: The study design was a retrospective longitudinal cohort study conducted at a tertia

Translating Predictive Analytics for Public Health Practice: A Case Study of Overdose Prevention in Rhode Island.

Prior applications of machine learning to population health have relied on conventional model assessment criteria, limiting the utility of models as decision support tools for public health practitioners. To facilitate practitioners' use of machine learning as a decision support tool for area-level intervention, we developed and applied 4 practice-based predictive model evaluation criteria (implementation capacity, preventive potential, health equity, and jurisdictional practicalities). We used a case study of overdose prevention in Rhode Island to illustrate how these criteria could inform pu

Public health physician perspectives on developing and deploying clinical practice guidelines during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic.

During the H1N1 outbreak of 2009, local public health units engaged in consultations with various levels of government to develop clinical practice guidelines. These guidelines provide specific clinical considerations around prevention, management, and treatment associated with the particular pathogen involved and are used by frontline healthcare professionals across many healthcare settings. In this article, we report on the lessons learned by Medical Officers of Health from across Canada on the guideline development and deployment processes and provide suggestions to improve guidelines devel

OBJECTIVES: To describe the grading of recommendations assessment, development and evaluation (GRADE) interactive evidence to decision (EtD) frameworks for tests and test strategies for clinical, public health, or coverage decisions. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: As part of the GRADE Working Group's DECIDE project, we conducted workshops, user testing with systematic review authors, guideline developers and other decision makers, and piloted versions of the EtD framework.
