INTRODUCTION: In vital pulp therapy such as direct pulp capping, clinical success rates depend on achieving hemostasis in exposed pulp tissue. For hemostasis of exposed pulp tissue, gentle pressure by cotton pellets moistened with sodium hypochlorite is most commonly used. However, more rapid and reliable methods are necessary. Therefore, we focused on high-frequency radio waves (HRW).
METHODS: To evaluate reparative dentin induction by HRW, we used a rat direct pulp capping model and performed hemostasis by using HRW of several strengths, covering the pulp with calcium hydroxide as a direct

The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunolocalization of fibronectin during reparative dentinogenesis in rat teeth after pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) or calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). The pulps of 72 upper and lower first molar teeth from 18 male Wistar rats were experimentally exposed. The pulps were capped with MTA or (Ca(OH)2); final restoration followed with zinc oxide and eugenol cement. The animals were euthanized at, respectively, one, three, seven and fourteen days postoperatively. At day one, all groups showed varying degrees of inflammation, from mild to se

Preserving pulp vitality in deep carious lesions remains a clinical challenge. Indirect pulp capping with bioactive calcium silicate materials such as Biodentine has shown favorable biological outcomes, while diode laser irradiation has been proposed as an adjunct to enhance hemostasis, disinfection, and pulpal healing. However, evidence regarding their combined use is limited. This randomized controlled clinical trial compared the clinical and radiographic outcomes of indirect pulp capping using Biodentine alone and diode laser pre-treatment followed by Biodentine. Patients with deep carious

BACKGROUND: Coronal pulpotomy (CP) has commonly been used after vital pulp exposure in deeply carious primary molars, although some concerns remain regarding unnecessary pulp removal and procedural morbidity. With the increasing use of calcium silicate cements (CSCs), more conservative vital pulp therapies, such as direct pulp capping (DPC) and partial pulpotomy (PP), have received growing attention. However, direct comparative clinical evidence between these approaches in primary molars is limited. Accordingly, this study sought to compare the cumulative survival probabilities of DPC and PP u

BACKGROUND: The elimination of pulpal infection is critical for the success of vital pulp therapy (VPT) in mature permanent teeth with carious pulp exposure. However, commonly used pulp capping materials often possess inadequate antibacterial properties, which limits treatment success. This study aimed to develop a zinc-containing ionic liquid (IL-Zn)/carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) composite and evaluate its potential as an adjunctive pulp capping material for VPT.
METHODS: IL-Zn was characterized by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton n

BACKGROUND: Vital pulp therapy (VPT) is recognized as a minimally invasive alternative to root canal treatment for teeth with initial and mild to moderate pulpitis. However, effective inflammation control remains a key challenge, as existing pulp capping materials exhibit limited anti-inflammatory efficacy. This study aimed to develop an injectable, photocurable pulp capping material with dual anti-inflammatory and pro-odontogenic functions to improve VPT outcomes for inflamed pulp. METHODS: The Sal B/GelMA composite hydrogel was synthesized and characterized for physicochemical properties, dr

OBJECTIVES: After direct pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), osteopontin (OPN) deposition occurs beneath the exposed pulp before the differentiation of odontoblast-like cells. This study aims to determine whether OPN is directly required for dentin bridge formation following direct pulp capping.
METHODS: Pulp exposures were made on the occlusal surface of maxillary first molars of five to six week-old, wild-type (WT) and Opn knockout (KO) mice. The cavity was filled with MTA and then with glass ionomer cement. One to 28 days (PODs 1-28), specimens were subjected to immunohisto

AIM: Previous studies have evaluated the pulpal responses to calcium silicate cements (CSCs) on normal dental pulp, but investigations on the effects of CSCs on inflamed pulp are limited. This study aimed to test the inflammatory response and odontogenic differentiation of inflamed rat dental pulp after direct pulp capping with CSCs.
METHODOLOGY: Wistar rat molars pulps were exposed for 48 h to induce inflammation and then capped with ProRoot MTA (Dentsply), Biodentine (Septodont), RetroMTA (Bio MTA) and Dycal (Dentsply Caulk). The degree of pulpal inflammation and hard tissue formation was e

BACKGROUND: Materials used for vital pulp therapy should support the natural healing and regeneration of the dental pulp. Ideally, these materials should be biocompatible, bioactive, non-toxic, and noncarcinogenic. Although numerous medicaments are currently available on the market, none fully meet all the criteria required for an ideal material. In recent years, calcium silicate-based materials, known for their bioactivity and biocompatibility, have gained widespread use in dental practice.
OBJECTIVES: This in vivo study investigated the tissue response and biological characteristics of mine

The purpose of this study was to report the success rate of using mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) as vital pulp therapy agents in immature permanent teeth with carious or traumatic pulp exposure. Subjects were children with permanent teeth requiring pulpotomy (apexogenesis) and without systemic diseases. Both ZOE and MTA treatments as pulpotomy agents showed clinical and radiographic success in immature permanent teeth. Although MTA was more successful, it is more expensive, and dentin bridges may develop over canal orifices, complicating future root canal therapy

INTRODUCTION: The role of complement, especially through the C5a fragment, is well-known for the initiation of inflammation. Its involvement in regeneration has been shown more recently by the recruitment of mesenchymal stem cells. C5a can be produced locally by the pulp fibroblasts in response to injury or infection. This work aims to investigate the effect of different pulp capping biomaterials on complement activation and its possible influence on inflammatory and pulp stem cell recruitment.
METHODS: Conditioned media were prepared from 3 pulp capping biomaterials: Biodentine (Septodont, S

BACKGROUND: Some of the disadvantages of calcium hydroxide Ca(OH) 2 as pulp-capping material are related to the inflammatory response, and its poor sealing ability. Cyanoacrylate glue was proposed in this study as pulp-capping agent because of its sealing ability, and diprogenta, on the other hand, was proposed because of its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the histopathological response of the pulp toward cyanoacrylate and diprogenta in direct pulp capping (DPC).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cyanoacrylate, diprogenta, and calcium hydro

Preservation of the primary teeth until their normal exfoliation is essential for normal oral function and facial growth of the child. To that end, treatment of primary teeth with large carious lesions approximating the pulp should be aimed at preserving the tooth. Currently, the pulpotomy is the most frequently used pulp treatment for cariously involved primary teeth. The purpose of this manuscript is to describe the use of an alternative to the pulpotomy, indirect pulp therapy (IPT), for the treatment of vital, primary teeth with carious involvement approaching the pulp. Accurate diagnosis o
