In contrast to the well-defined brainstem centers for saccades and eye reflexes, the brainstem centers mediating smooth pursuit eye movements are poorly understood. In monkeys, unilateral damage to the basal pons impairs horizontal smooth pursuit in the direction of the side of the lesion. The major source of afferents to the basal pons is the middle temporal area (MT). The dorsolateral pontine nucleus (DLPN) in the basal pons is considered to be the major gateway for smooth pursuit related signals to the contralateral flocculus. In humans, only one patient was found to have a unilateral lesio

Experimental evidence demonstrates that the primate cerebellum plays an essential role in the generation of smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). The same neural elements also take part in the generation of the 'direct' component of OKN, which is responsible for an initial jump in slow phase eye velocity during constant velocity stimulation and the optokinetic response above 0,05 Hz. In addition to the extensively studied floccular region, recent experiments also indicate a role of the mid-vermis (lobule VI and VII) in SPEM control. The 'indirect' or 'velocity storage' component of OKN produces

Observers use smooth pursuit to track moving objects-like koi carp gliding through a pond. When positional errors accumulate, rapid catch-up saccades correct for them. Despite their abruptness, these saccades usually go unnoticed, creating the seamless experience of smooth tracking. We conducted three experiments to examine awareness and control of catch-up saccades (Experiment 1), the effect of training (Experiment 2), and of movement intention (Experiment 3). All experiments followed a similar protocol. On each trial, a target moved horizontally at one of three constant speeds (3-12 dva/s).

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease caused by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). One of the most prevalent symptoms is eye movement impairment, presenting in 75% of PD patients, which have fragmented and hypometric smooth pursuit movements with prolonged latency. We aimed to investigate differences in smooth pursuit, reflexive, and memory-guided saccades and antisaccades between patients with early-stage PD and healthy controls.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with idiopathic PD patients in

When repeatedly exposed to moving stimuli, the oculomotor system elicits anticipatory smooth pursuit (ASP) eye movements, even before the stimulus moves. ASP is affected oppositely to perceptual speed judgments of repetitive moving stimuli: After a sequence of fast stimuli, ASP velocity increases, whereas perceived speed decreases. These two effects--perceptual adaptation and oculomotor priming--could result from adapting a single common internal speed representation that is used for perceptual comparisons and for generating ASP. Here we test this hypothesis by assessing the temporal dependenc

OBJECTIVE: This study used eye movement tests to examine whether frontal lobe dysfunction is present in delusional disorder.
METHOD: Smooth pursuit and voluntary saccadic eye movements of 15 delusional patients, 40 schizophrenic patients, and 40 normal subjects were recorded and analyzed statistically.
RESULTS: The schizophrenic patients differed significantly from the normal subjects in some smooth pursuit eye movement characteristics, whereas both the schizophrenic and the delusional patients showed more saccades than the normal subjects during the smooth pursuit test. The delusional patie

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are important to gather visual information that guides our interactions with moving objects (e.g., tracking a tennis ball, or following a car when driving). In many neurological conditions, from Parkinson's disease to stroke, the voluntary control of SPEM can be compromised. Therefore, SPEMs can serve as sensitive proxies for assessing cognitive and sensorimotor function. Prior research has shown that SPEMs are influenced by attention and working memory load, yet it remains unclear how the sensory modality of concurrent tasks interacts with these effects. He

Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show dysfunctions of the fronto-striatal circuitry, which imply corresponding oculomotor deficits including smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM). However, evidence for a deficit in SPEM is inconclusive, with some studies reporting reduced velocity gain while others did not find any SPEM dysfunctions in OCD patients. Interestingly, psychosis-like traits have repeatedly been linked to both OCD and impaired SPEM. Here, we examined a large sample of n = 168 patients with OCD, n = 93 unaffected first-degree relatives and n = 171 healthy control subje

During smooth pursuit eye movement, observers often misperceive velocity. Pursued stimuli appear slower (Aubert-Fleishl phenomenon [1, 2]), stationary objects appear to move (Filehne illusion [3]), the perceived direction of moving objects is distorted (trajectory misperception [4]), and self-motion veers away from its true path (e.g., the slalom illusion [5]). Each illusion demonstrates that eye speed is underestimated with respect to image speed, a finding that has been taken as evidence of early sensory signals that differ in accuracy [4, 6-11]. Here we present an alternative Bayesian accou

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SP) are driven by moving objects. The pursuit system processes the visual input signals and transforms this information into an oculomotor output signal. Despite the object's movement on the retina and the eyes' movement in the head, we are able to locate the object in space implying coordinate transformations from retinal to head and space coordinates. To test for the visual and oculomotor components of SP and the possible transformation sites, we investigated three experimental conditions: (I) fixation of a stationary target with a second target moving across th

Patients suffering from some psychiatric and neurological disorders demonstrate abnormally high levels of saccadic distractibility when carrying out the antisaccade task. This has been particularly thoroughly demonstrated in patients with schizophrenia. A large body of evidence has been accumulated from studies of patients which suggests that such eye movement abnormalities may arise from frontal lobe dysfunction. The psychopharmacology of saccadic distractibility is less well understood, but is relevant both to interpreting patient studies and to establishing the neurological basis of their f

To clarify the role of the cerebellum in pursuit initiation (first 100 msec), we used infrared oculography to examine the effect of unilateral cerebellar lesions on the initial (0-20 msec) and later (80-100 msec) periods as well as the steady-state response (200-300 msec) of horizontal smooth pursuit in 10 patients with unilateral cerebellar lesions. These results were compared with those of 17 age-matched healthy subjects. Smooth pursuit was elicited with a step-ramp target movement with randomized horizontal directions and velocities of 10 degrees/sec and 30 degrees/sec. In the first 20-msec

Two hundred eighty-five volunteers from a community college were screened on campus for accuracy of their smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) by electrooculograph (EOG). Those volunteers with the least and the most accurate SPEM were recalled to the laboratory for a comprehensive evaluation of clinical and demographic characteristics, family history, neurological status, and psychophysiological and biological measures, including SPEM [repeat EOG test and infrared (IR) test], an electroencephalogram, auditory and visual evoked potentials, reaction time (RT), the continuous performance task (CPT

PURPOSE: The main characteristics of smooth pursuit are well-described, but few studies have analyzed performance in strabismic patients, especially regarding differences between types of strabismus. In this study, we analyzed smooth pursuit eye movements of children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) or accommodative esotropia (AET), compared with age-matched controls.
METHODS: We included 58 children, aged between 4 and 13 years old (AET n = 24, IXT n = 18, and controls n = 16). After ophthalmological evaluation, eye movements were recorded using a Tobii Pro X3 eye tracker (120 Hz). Smooth p

Externally guided sensory-motor processes deteriorate with increasing age. Internally guided, for example, predictive, behavior usually helps to overcome sensory-motor delays. We studied whether predictive components of visuomotor transformation decline with age. We investigated smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) of 45 healthy subjects with paradigms of different degrees of predictability with respect to target motion onset, type (smoothed triangular, ramp stimulation), and direction by blanking the target at various intervals of the ramp stimulation. Using repetitive trials of SPEM stimulati

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have difficulties in the control of self-guided (i.e., internally driven) movements. The basal ganglia provide a nonspecific internal cue for the development of a preparatory activity for a given movement in the sequence of repetitive movements. Controversy surrounds the question of whether PD patients are capable of (1) anticipating (before an external trigger appears; i.e., anticipation) and (2) predicting movement velocity once a moving target shortly disappears from the visual scene (i.e., prediction). To dissociate between these two components, we ex

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEMs) are eye rotations that are used to maintain fixation on a moving target. Such rotations complicate the interpretation of the retinal image, because they nullify the retinal motion of the target, while generating retinal motion of stationary objects in the background. This poses a problem for the oculomotor system, which must track the stabilized target image while suppressing the optokinetic reflex, which would move the eye in the direction of the retinal background motion (opposite to the direction in which the target is moving). Similarly, the perceptual

BACKGROUND: Previous studies of discordant monozygotic (MZ) twins have suggested that abnormal smooth pursuit eye tracking is an indicator of genetic liability for schizophrenia. We attempted to replicate this in a different sample of twins.
METHODS: Probands from 12 sets of MZ twins discordant for schizophrenia who met DSM-III-R criteria for schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder and their co-twins without psychiatric diagnosis (except 2 with a history of substance abuse) and 12 sets of normal control MZ twins. Psychiatric diagnosis was based on Structured Clinical Interview; monozygosity

Smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) gain, total saccades, and subtypes of saccades were quantified from the visual pursuit tracking of 26 fluphenazine-treated patients with schizophrenia and 42 normal controls. Tracking was repeated in 16 patients who underwent a placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover comparison of fluphenazine and clozapine. Fluphenazine-treated patients showed significant reduction in SPEM gain and significant increases in both total, intrusive, and anticipatory saccades and in saccadic amplitude, when compared to controls. Clozapine significantly reduced SPEM gain and si
