[Human hantavirus diseases - still neglected zoonoses?].

Hantavirus disease is the most common rodent-borne viral infection in the Czech Republic, with a mean annual incidence of 0.02 cases per 100 000 population and specific antibodies detected in 1% of the human population. Four hantaviruses (Puumala, Dobrava-Belgrade, Tula, and Seewis) circulate in this country, of which Puumala virus (responsible for a mild form of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome called nephropathia epidemica) and Dobrava-Belgrade virus (causing haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome) have been proven to cause human disease. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehens

Hantavirus: an increasing problem?

Hantaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses and members of the Bunyaviridae family. They are transmitted from various rodent hosts by inhalation of infected urine, saliva or faeces. Infection in rodent hosts is inapparent but persists for life. Person-to-person spread of hantavirus has not been described. Two main presentations of the disease occur. Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is due to Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, Porogia and Belgrade viruses. In general HFRS due to Hantaan, Porogia and Belgrade viruses is more severe and has higher mortality than that due to Puumala (nephropathia ep

Changes in the Epidemiology of Zoonotic Infections in Children: A Nationwide Register Study in Finland.

OBJECTIVES: Zoonotic infections are difficult to recognize in children. The age distributions and seasonal occurrences of these infections vary substantially, even among those transmitted by the same vectors, and their epidemiology may change over time. The aim was to report the incidences and trends of Borrelia burgdorferi, Puumala virus, Francisella tularensis and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus infections in the pediatric population (age 0-19) of Finland. METHODS: A nationwide survey based on the National Infectious Disease Register was conducted from 1996 to 2019 and all laboratory-co

Pre-Clinical Studies of Inactivated Polyvalent HFRS Vaccine.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is the most common natural focal disease in the Russian Federation with about 6-12 thousand cases annually. 97.7% of all HFRS cases in Russia are caused by the Puumala virus, 1.5%-by the Hantaan, Amur, Seoul viruses, and about 0.8% by the Kurkino and Sochi viruses. There are no licensed vaccines for the prevention of HFRS in the European Region; there are no specific therapeutic to treat orthohantavirus infections. Here we report the results of candidate polyvalent HFRS vaccine preclinical studies. The vaccine was produced on the basis of three viru

Dynamics of Puumala hantavirus infection in naturally infected bank voles (Clethrinomys glareolus).

Specific features of hantavirus infection in bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) were studied in the endemic area of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in the foothills of the Ural mountains, using long-term observations on living animals by the capture-mark-recapture (CMR) method. The results demonstrated that the infection naturally circulating in the voles is chronic (lasting for up to 15 months) and asymptomatic, with a peak of Puumala virus accumulation and release from the organism during the first month after infection. It was shown that the bank vole population includes young

Serologic Evidence of Hantavirus Exposure in Humans, Italy, 2004-2018.

Rodentborne hantaviruses and lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) circulate in northern Italy but are rarely diagnosed. We tested samples collected from 371 patients during 2004-2018 and detected LCMV IgG in 2.7% of samples and hantavirus IgG in 7.3%. Puumala virus-neutralizing antibodies were confirmed in 10 cases, indicating unrecognized local hantavirus circulation.

Phylogeographic diversity of pathogenic and non-pathogenic hantaviruses in slovenia.

Slovenia is a very diverse country from a natural geography point of view, with many different habitats within a relatively small area, in addition to major geological and climatic differences. It is therefore not surprising that several small mammal species have been confirmed to harbour hantaviruses: A. flavicollis (Dobrava virus), A. agrarius (Dobrava virus-Kurkino), M. glareolus (Puumala virus), S. areanus (Seewis virus),M. agrestis, M. arvalis and M. subterraneus (Tula virus). Three of the viruses, namely the Dobrava, Dobrava-Kurkino and Puumala viruses, cause disease in humans, with sign

Climate Variability and the Occurrence of Human Puumala Hantavirus Infections in Europe: A Systematic Review.

Hantaviruses are distributed worldwide and are transmitted by rodents. In Europe, the infection usually manifests as a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) known as nephropathia epidemica (NE), which is triggered by the virus species Puumala. Its host is the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). In the context of climate change, interest in the role of climatic factors for the disease has increased. A systematic review was conducted to investigate the association between climate variability and the occurrence of human Puumala hantavirus infections in Europe. We performed a litera

Mild course of Puumala nephropathy in children in an area with sporadic occurrence Hantavirus infection.

The first three children with Puumala virus nephropathy diagnosis in the Czech Republic are reported on. A boy and two girls were admitted with symptoms of interstitial nephritis. The medical history in all children revealed flu-like symptoms. All patients were mildly pyrexial and had elevated erythrocytes sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein and low hemoglobin levels. Serum creatinine levels were elevated and proteinuria exceeded 700 mg/L in all children. Tubular proteinuria, glycosuria, high urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase levels and alpha-1-microglobulin levels confirmed the tubul

[Sero-epidemiological studies of zoonotic infections in hunters--comparative analysis with veterinarians, farmers, and abattoir workers].

The aim of this study was to investigate seroprevalences to zoonotic pathogens in hunters, to compare the results with other predisposed occupational groups already investigated and to propose preventive measures. Blood samples were taken from 146 male and 3 female hunters from the provinces of Styria and Burgenland in the south-east of Austria and anamnestic data were obtained using a questionnaire. The serological investigations included the following bacterial, viral and parasitic zoonotic agents or zoonoses, respectively (antibody prevalence rates in brackets): borreliosis (IgG 42%, IgM 7%

[Nephropathy due to Puumala hantavirus].

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is due to an infection by the virus of the Hantavirus genus. Rodent hosts of Hantavirus are present in restricted areas in France; consequently, there are ecological niches and microepidemics of human Hantavirus infections. A HFRS case was diagnosed in the Paris region. The 11-year-old child had an acute debut fever-persistent despite antipyretic medication-asthenia, headache, abdominal pain, myalgia, thrombocytopenia, as well as renal failure with proteinuria. The diagnosis was made with a relevant clinical history and the specific serology of Puum

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, virological and epidemiological aspects.

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is characterized by fever, headache, abdominal pain, renal dysfunction and various haemorrhagic manifestations. The viruses causing HFRS all belong to the Hantavirus genus in the Bunyaviridae family. At least three of the different hantaviruses are associated with human disease: Hantaan, Seoul, and Puumala viruses. HFRS is endemic in a belt from Norway in the west, through Sweden, Finland, the Soviet Union, China, Korea to Japan in the east. The clinical severity of HFRS varies throughout this belt. A severe form with haemorrhagic manifestations an

Antigenic relationships of hantavirus strains analysed by monoclonal antibodies.

The antigenic relationships among 71 hantavirus strains, isolated from rodent species or humans in several geographic regions, were examined by immunofluorescence assay (IFA) using human patient sera and a panel of 22 monoclonal antibodies prepared against Hantaan, Seoul, and Puumala viruses. The study included virus strains, mainly from the former USSR, for which little or no serological data were available. Fifty-nine of the 71 isolates could be placed into five antigenic groups of hantaviruses, Hantaan (HTN), Puumala (PUU), Seoul (SEO), Prospect Hill (PH), Dobrava/Belgrade (DOB). Twelve iso

In silico design and evaluation of a multiepitope vaccine targeting the nucleoprotein of Puumala orthohantavirus.

The Puumala orthohantavirus is present in the body of the bank vole (Myodes glareolus). Humans infected with this virus may develop hemorrhagic fever accompanying renal syndrome. In addition, the infection may further lead to the failure of an immune system completely. The present study aimed to propose a possible vaccine by employing bioinformatics techniques to identify B and T-cell antigens. The best multi-epitope of potential immunogenicity was generated by combining epitopes. Additionally, the linkers EAAAK, AAY, and GPGPG were utilized in order to link the epitopes successfully. Further,

A case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome complicated by spleen haemorrhage.

A case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) complicated by spleen haemorrhage is described. The patient developed progressive anaemia, hypotension and signs of preshock. Computerized tomography demonstrated extensive haematoma in the spleen and splenectomy was performed. This case confirms previous reports that HFRS caused by Puumala virus may be associated with severe haemorrhagic manifestations.

Using an indirect immunofluorescent test with Hantaan 76-118 and Puumala strains as antigens, antibodies against haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome viruses were found for the first time in human in Laos and Viet-Nam and confirmed the previously published results in Thailand. These results suggest the existence of an Hantaan-related virus in these countries.

[Nephropathia epidemica. Hantavirus and acute renal insufficiency].

Puumala virus belongs to the hantavirus group and as other members of the group it can cause acute renal insufficiency. Other hantaviruses are responsible for Korean hemorrhagic fever and other hemorrhagic fevers with renal involvement. In Scandinavia, hantavirus nephropathy is better known as nephropathia epidemica. Hantavirus cause asymptomatic infections in mice and rats and the virus is thought to be transmitted to man via inhalation of desicated saliva, urine or feces from infected animals. In the other Nordic countries, the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus) is the commonest natural hos

[Hantavirus infection as the cause of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome].

Hantavirus is an RNA virus that can cause potentially fatal pulmonary and renal diseases in humans. Infections with Hantaviruses occur through inhalation of aerosol from rodent faeces, urine or saliva. The predominant virus type in Denmark is the Puumala virus, which causes the mildest form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, the so-called nephropathia epidemica (NE) with good prognosis (mortality 0.1-0.4%). The incidence of Hantavirus-infection in Denmark is about ten cases a year. The diagnosis of Hantavirus-infection is based on serology and/or polymerase chain reaction in blood or u

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome: memorandum from a WHO meeting.

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a public health problem throughout most of the European and Asian land mass. Although predominantly associated with rural areas, it is now being recognized as an urban problem in some countries, and also presents a particular hazard to laboratory staff who use rodents for biomedical research. In wild rodents (rats, mice and voles) the infection is asymptomatic. Human infection with the HFRS agent(s) is sporadic, but under special circumstances epidemics occur; the infection may be completely silent, or associated with mild or severe disease. Sev

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis following nephropathia epidemica.

Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) is an acute monophasic inflammatory and demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS) occurring days to weeks after a virus infection or vaccination. Nephropathia epidemica (NE) is a haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by Puumala virus, with endemic regions in Europe, especially Scandinavia and Western Russia. We describe a case of severe nephropathia epidemica requiring dialysis, followed by severe CNS symptoms caused by ADEM. To our best knowledge this is the first case in the literature in which NE caused ADEM.
