Scabies and pediculosis pubis: an update of treatment regimens and general review.

The ectoparasites scabies and pediculosis pubis are common causes of skin rash and pruritus worldwide. They are transmitted primarily by person-to-person spread and are generally associated with low morbidity. The preferred treatment for scabies has generally been topical agents such as lindane and permethrin. Recently, ivermectin has demonstrated good efficacy in the treatment of scabies, and it may be of particular use in institutional outbreaks and in communities in which scabies is endemic. Combination treatment with topical agents and oral ivermectin may be necessary for crusted scabies.

Handwipe sampling and analysis procedure for the measurement of dermal contact with pesticides.

A handwipe sampling and analysis procedure was developed for the measurement of dermal contact to pesticides. This procedure utilizes cellulose dressing sponges wetted with 2-propanol. A two-step wiping procedure is described that ensures that the entire hand is sampled. Removal efficiency experiments show that dry residues of the pesticides chlorpyrifos and pyrethrin I are quantitatively removed from hands immediately following contact. Results suggest that the procedure may remove pesticide residues that are deeply embedded in the skin and not removed by soap-and-water washing. Extraction ef

Susceptibility of body-lice to DDT in a heavily treated area of Yugoslavia.

Body-lice collected in the Kosohovo-Metohia area of Yugoslavia, an area with a long history of epidemic typhus and one which had been treated with DDT since 1947, were tested for their susceptibility to that compound by the standard WHO test and showed an average mortality of 99% to 1.0% DDT and 96% to 0.1% DDT. Freshly fed insects showed 100% mortality at both concentrations. Tests with DDT-impregnated cloth indicated that the LD(50) had tripled between 1955 and 1958.In sleeve tests the body-lice appeared to tolerate 15 times as much DDT as in tests not involving the use of the human arm. Treatment of scabies and pediculosis with lindane preparations: an evaluation.

Risks and benefits involved in the use of lindane preparations for the treatment of scabies and head louse infestations are evaluated. Although lindane per si is moderately toxic, capable of inducing neurotoxic and hemotoxic effects, there is little evidence that the preparations used in the treatment of scabies and pediculosis give rise to toxic symptoms when applied according to directions. Current evidence does not support the view that lindane is intrinsically carcinogenic, although very high doses have induced hepatomas in mice. It is concluded that the benefits obtained in the use of lin

Pyrethroid Ingestion With Brain and Heart Involvement: A Case Report.

Insecticides have great efficacy and are used in homes and agricultural fields across the globe, including pyrethrins and their synthetic equivalents, or pyrethroids. Among their compounds are deltamethrin and imiprothrin, which are present in many insecticide sprays. Humans can become toxically exposed to them through ingestion, skin contact, or inadvertent inhalation. In humans, gastrointestinal and neurotoxic side effects are frequently observed in cases of acute oral intoxication. Although they have not been well documented up to this point, pyrethroids have occasionally caused cardiotoxic

Pesticide Toxicity Associated with Infertility.

Pesticides have benefited mankind in many ways like agriculture, industrial and health sectors. On the other hand, conversely their deleterious effects in both, humans and animals are also alarming. Pesticides including organophosphates, organochlorines, carbamates, pyrethrins and pyrethroids are found sufficiently in the environment resulting in everyday human exposure. This is of a huge concern because most of the pesticides are known to target all the physiological functions of both humans and animals. Indeed, reproduction, being one of the most important physiological processes, that is af

Pyrethroids, nerve poisons: how their risks to human health should be assessed.

The extensive worldwide efforts of structural modification of natural pyrethrins for better performances have resulted in successful development of a wide variety of synthetic pyrethroids with tremendously high efficacy, knock-down activity or vapor action, and/or with acceptable environmental stability and safety. Currently these pyrethroids including their preferentially manufactured stereoisomers are widely used in agriculture, and for public health as well as household insect control. The detailed toxicology and metabolism studies intended to attain human risk assessment have revealed that

Efficacy of chemical repellents against Otobius megnini (Acari: Argasidae) and three species of ixodid ticks.

Otobius megnini (Dugès), often referred to as the ear tick or spinose ear tick, is a one-host tick native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. Infestations of this species can cause severe irritation and may affect breeding behavior in the host. Although chemical repellents are commonly used as an alternative approach to conventional arthropod vector control, information on repellency against O. megnini is lacking. This study compared repellency of ammonia, BioUD(®), 98.25% DEET, garlic pepper tea, permanone, and pyrethrin with piperonyl butoxide, against larvae stages of O. megnini,

Comparative efficacy of treatments for pediculosis capitis infestations.

Ovicidal activity and killing times were evaluated for six pediculicides, using viable eggs and recently fed head lice from infested children. Lice were continuously exposed to the products until death, and elapsed time was recorded. Eggs were immersed for ten minutes, rinsed, and dried. Four synergized pyrethrin products (RID, R&C Shampoo, A-200 Pyrinate Shampoo, A-200 Pyrinate Liquid) killed all lice in ten to 23 minutes, and 23% to 32% of treated eggs hatched; 0.5% malathion lotion (Prioderm Lotion) killed lice within five minutes and was highly ovicidal, with only 5% of eggs hatching. Evaluation of the effects of domestic tomato processing on biopesticide residue using natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) extractions.

The present study evaluated the fate of fourteen botanical biopesticides in processed tomato samples. Various processing methods were employed, including washing, dehydration, and the preparation of juice and sauce. The extraction was performed using more sustainable techniques, aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of conventional organic solvents by substituting them with natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). Solid-liquid extraction (SLE) and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with solidification of floating organic drop (DLLME-SFOD) were utilized for solid and liquid tomato s

[Personal protection measures against blood-sucking insects and ticks].

Blood-sucking arthropods are major vectors of various pathogens like viruses, bacteria, protozoa and nematodes. Preventing exposure to the vector is imperative especially when vaccine and prophylactic treatments are not available. Personal protection measures (PPM) are essential and often the only means available when dealing with blood-sucking disease transmitting arthropods. Awareness of the risk in the specific areas of travel is the first step to be taken before and while traveling. PPM include preventive personal behavior, suitable clothing, application of insect repellents to the skin, t

Efficacy of aerial spraying of mosquito adulticide in reducing incidence of West Nile Virus, California, 2005.

Epidemic transmission of West Nile virus (WNV) in Sacramento County, California, in 2005 prompted aerial application of pyrethrin, a mosquito adulticide, over a large urban area. Statistical analyses of geographic information system datasets indicated that adulticiding reduced the number of human WNV cases within 2 treated areas compared with the untreated area of the county. When we adjusted for maximum incubation period of the virus from infection to onset of symptoms, no new cases were reported in either of the treated areas after adulticiding; 18 new cases were reported in the untreated ar

Efficacy and safety of selamectin against fleas and heartworms in dogs and cats presented as veterinary patients in North America.

A series of randomized, controlled, masked field studies was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of selamectin in the treatment of flea infestations on dogs and cats, and in the prevention of heartworm infection in dogs. In addition, observations were made on the beneficial effect of selamectin treatment on dogs and cats showing signs of flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). In all studies selamectin was applied topically, once per month, in unit doses providing a minimum dosage of 6mgkg(-1). Dogs and cats with naturally occurring flea infestations, some of which also had signs associated wit

Transformation of synthetic pyrethroid insecticides by a thermophilic Bacillus sp.

Employing a mineral salts medium containing Tween 80 as the primary carbon source, a strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus was isolated which was able to hydrolyse selected second and third-generation pyrethroids to non-insecticidal products. Of a range of pyrethroid insecticides the trans-isomer of permethrin was the most readily transformed by this microbial isolate, whilst flumethrin was the least. 3-Phenoxybenzoic acid and the respective halovinyl or haloacid moieties were detected as the major hydrolytic products of the pyrethroids. It is believed that 3-phenoxybenzoic acid was formed fro

Synthesis and insecticidal activity of new pyrethroids.

BACKGROUND: Pyrethroids are among the most potent pesticides known, with great potential for structural variation with retention or enhancement of potency. The simple methyl ester is easier to prepare (at least one step shorter) than the more complex pyrethroids modified on the alcohol moiety. The objective was to synthesise methyl esters of pyrethroid acids containing an aromatic ring on the acid moiety and evaluate their biological activity against Ascia monuste orseis Latr., Tuta absoluta Meyrick, Periplaneta americana (L.), Musca domestica L. and Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch.). Toxicity of newly synthesized pyrethroids against the yellow fever mosquito larvae, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Synthesis of p-substituted benzyl esters of (+/-) cis 2,2-dimethyl-3-(2,2-dichlorovinyl)cyclopropane-carboxylic acid has been reported. (+/-) cis Dichlorovinyl acid esters of p-substituted phenols acquired insecticidal activity after introduction of methylene group. The insecticidal activity shown against mosquito larvae A. aegypti by compounds having electron withdrawing groups such as -NO2, -CN was substantially higher than that of the compounds having electron-donating groups such as -CH3, -OCH3.
