OBJECTIVE: To establish a cervical lymph node metastasis model of pyriform sinus VX2 carcinoma and investigate its metastatic features.
METHODS: VX2 tumor tissue suspension was transplanted into the pyriform sinus submucosa of 15 rabbits under direct laryngoscopy. Rabbits were randomly placed into 1 of 3 groups, each comprised of 5 rabbits. Health evaluation and histopathological analysis were performed on days 14 (group 1), 21 (group 2), and 28 (group 3) after transplantation.

Anterior neck abscesses are not rare; but their origin from within the usually infection-resistant thyroid gland is not thought of in the first instance. We encountered 3 patients with differing presentations (tender nodule over anterior neck, recurrent abscess overlying the thyroid gland, and nonhealing fistula with inflammation of the anterior neck). These were caused by persistent embryological communication from the pyriform sinus to the thyroid gland to the left lobe. OBJECTIVE: We designed a retrospective study to evaluate the incidence of contralateral neck metastases in squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Sixty-three patients with strictly unilateral squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus who underwent bilateral neck dissection at the time of primary surgery were included in this study. The medical records of all patients were reviewed. A multivariate statistical analysis was performed, considering some clinical and histologic parameters of T stage and N stage in relation to contralateral neck metastases.

OBJECTIVE: The hypopharynx has a rich lymphatic network that places patients with tumors of the hypopharynx at high risk for early dissemination of the disease into the cervical lymphatics. Therefore, ipsilateral elective neck dissection of clinically N0 neck in lateralized lesions of hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) is widely accepted as a standard treatment. However, the management of the contralateral N0 neck is still controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and predictive factors of contralateral occult lymph node metastasis in pyriform sinus SCC.

Pyriform sinus cancer remains one of the most lethal of human diseases. Regardless of approach attempted significant enhancement of survival has not been realized. In this study a retrospective single institutional review of all patients diagnosed with pyriform sinus cancer during the 1980s was conducted. Decision analysis was used to evaluate the current treatment options for stage III squamous cell carcinoma of the pyriform sinus (surgery, radiation therapy, and combined surgery/radiation therapy). The objective of this study is to report the long-term outcomes of primary radiotherapy (RT) for patients with T1-T2 squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the pyriform sinus. Between November 1964 and March 2008, 135 patients with T1-T2 pyriform sinus SCC were treated with primary RT at the University of Florida. Adjuvant chemotherapy was employed in 21 patients (16 %) and 62 patients (46 %) underwent a planned neck dissection. OBJECTIVE: To study the treatment outcome of laryngeal function sparing of pharyngectomy in pyriform sinus carcinoma.
METHOD: Fourty-two cases with pyriform sinus cancer in laryngeal function sparing surgery were collected from 1989 to 1999. The method of operation, the complication and surviving rate were analyzed.

Variability in the location of parathyroid glands is well recognized. There are usually 4 parathyroid glands located in the area of the thyroid gland, but embryologically, they may be found anywhere from the angle of the jaw to the pericardium. We report a case of an ectopic parathyroid gland in the pyriform sinus. It appeared as a tumorous lesion in the pyriform sinus owing to progress of secondary hyperparathyroidism.

In a retrospective analysis of 61 patients with carcinoma of the pyriform sinus, treated primarily with high doses of radiation therapy with surgery reserved for persistent or recurrent tumor, survival rates of 56.5% and 12.4% were found in Stages III and IV, respectively.
