The association between tobacco use and COVID-19 in Qatar.

The effects of smoking on COVID-19 are controversial. Some studies show no link between smoking and severe COVID-19, whereas others demonstrate a significant link. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the prevalence of tobacco use among COVID-19 patients, examine the relationship between tobacco use and hospitalized COVID-19 (non-severe and severe), and quantify its risk factors. A random sample of 7430 COVID-19 patients diagnosed between 27 February-30 May 2020 in Qatar were recruited over the telephone to complete an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The prevalence of tobacco s

Seroprevalence and clinical outcome of hepatitis D infection in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide, 5-10% of people with chronic hepatitis B virus infection are co-infected with hepatitis D virus. In Qatar, there are no data on hepatitis D virus infection among patients positive for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). AIMS: To determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis D virus infection among patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection in Qatar and assess the characteristics of these patients. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all HBsAg-positive individuals tested for hepatitis D virus between 1 January 2010 and 29 December 2019 within the Hamad

Prevalence and Management of Hypokalemia in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients in Qatar.

INTRODUCTION: Hypokalemia is common in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). It is associated with increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Treatment usually includes oral potassium supplements, which are poorly tolerated. Our aim was to evaluate the prevalence of hypokalemia in PD patients in Qatar and to improve treatment measures. METHODS: All PD patients in Qatar with persistent hypokalemia and on potassium supplement were included. We performed a root cause analysis, and a management pathway was created. We collected data before (Period 1) and after (Period 2) implementa

An Evaluation of the National Brucellosis Surveillance System in Qatar, 2018.

Introduction Brucellosis is one of the most prevalent bacterial zoonoses and is considered an economically important infection that affects humans and livestock. The infection is usually transmitted to humans through direct contact with infected materials, such as the afterbirth, or indirectly through the ingestion of animal products. In addition, the consumption of raw milk represents a major source of the infection. In the Eastern Mediterranean region, the incidence of brucellosis ranges from one per 100,000 to 20 per 100,000; however, the actual figure is estimated at 20 to 25 times greater

Seroprevalence of four zoonotic viral diseases in camels in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the dynamics of zoonotic diseases is integral to the One Health approach, as it guides strategies to mitigate the impact of infections on both animal and human health. In Qatar, the circulation of many zoonotic viral infections among animals remains unknown. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of four zoonotic viral diseases in camels in Qatar: The Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), in addition to three arboviruses (arthropod-borne viruses): [West Nile virus (WNV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), and Rift Valle

Comparison of four diagnostic techniques for Cryptosporidium detection in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a common pathogenic parasite known to cause diarrhea in humans and animals, particularly in young children living in poor conditions. Although diarrheal disease is usually mild in immunocompetent individuals, it may progress into a life-threatening complication among the immunocompromised. Due to insensitive conventional diagnostic methods, the identification of Cryptosporidium can be inaccurate and challenging. The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence of cryptosporidiosis infection in Qatar by comparing four different diagnostic methods for detectin

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in feral cats in Qatar.

BACKGROUND: Cats are essential in the life cycle of Toxoplasma gondii as they can shed the environmentally resistant oocysts after acquiring infection. Human populations living in cities with high densities of feral cats are therefore likely to be at risk of infection. The current study is the first to estimate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in the feral cat population in Qatar. We investigated the seroprevalence of T. gondii among 495 adult cats from urban and suburban districts in Qatar. Using results from the Modified Agglutination Test, we fitted statistical models with host sex, area and

Acute renal failure in the State of Qatar: presentation and outcome.

Despite major improvements in health care, acute renal failure is still one of the main prognostic factors in terms of patient mortality and long-term morbidity. This cohort prospective study to evaluate the patterns and outcomes of renal failure in Qatar was performed between January and June 2005. Of the 213 patients followed prospectively from referral to the end of their hospitalization, 66.7% were males and 33.3% females. Their overall mean age was 60 years; the majority were referred from critical care units. Comorbidity was present in 87% of all patients. Volume depletion, hypotension,

Pre- and neonatal hydrocephalus in the Middle East: experience in Qatar.

In a retrospective study, all cases of hydrocephalus diagnosed antenatally or within the first 10 days of life during the period 1986-1989 were reviewed. Thirty-four cases were diagnosed antenatally and 31 after delivery. Among the last, 13 were hemorrhagic. In 17 cases a meningomyelocele was present. In 12 cases other malformations outside the nervous system were observed. This represents an incidence of 157/100,000 live births for hydrocephalus and 41/100,000 for meningomyelocele. All cases were compared against a control group that had normal antenatal ultrasound findings at the same time (

Influenza prevalence and vaccine efficacy among diabetic patients in Qatar.

Seasonal influenza viruses may lead to severe illness and mortality in patients with comorbidities, including Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Vaccination against influenza in DM patients may reduce influenza incidence and severity. Before the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, influenza infections were the most prevalent respiratory infections in Qatar. Still, reports about influenza prevalence and vaccine efficacy in DM patients have not been reported. This study aimed to analyze influenza prevalence among other respiratory infections and assess influenza vaccine efficacy in DM patients in Qatar. St
