Representations of Research among Newly Graduated Paramedical Professionals: A Qualitative Study.

Despite a keen interest in clinical research, most paramedical professionals are unwilling to play an active role. Our objective was to explore paramedical professionals' representations of research. Using an existing database of final year paramedical students (speech therapy, occupational therapy, psychomotricity, audiometry, physiotherapy, orthoptics), we deployed a qualitative approach composed of two successive steps: (1) a free word association task, and (2) semi-structured individual interviews. Out of the 54 students who agreed to be contacted, we received 21 responses to the free word

Using qualitative methods in research with people who have intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: JARID has a long and positive association with qualitative research dating back to its first issue. This paper looks at the development of qualitative methods and their application in the field of intellectual disability (ID). METHOD: When invited to make a contribution on qualitative research for the 25th Anniversary of JARID, the present authors considered the options. We examined the frequency with which qualitative studies have been published in three major intellectual disability journals over a decade, and we considered attempting a systematic review or a meta-synthesis. Research participants and stakeholders' views on feedback of genetic research findings: a qualitative study of the H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence that variants of the Apolipoprotein L1 gene in Africans and people of African descent increase the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). A study conducted by the H3Africa Kidney Disease Research Network showed that 28.2% of the Ghanaian study population carried 2 APOL1 high-risk variants. Relatives of patients with CKD may be at increased risk of developing CKD. Researchers of this project are faced with an ethical dilemma of whether, study participants and their relatives should be informed about their risk of developing CKD. The aim of this study was

EXPERIENCING SYNDEMIC: DISENTANGLING THE BIOSOCIAL COMPLEXITY OF TUBERCULOSIS THROUGH QUALITATIVE RESEARCH.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global public health problem that has become a crisis fuelled by HIV and the increasing occurrence of antimicrobial resistance. What has been termed the biosocial nature of TB challenges effective control of the disease. Yet, biosocial interactions involved in the persistence of TB in diverse settings are difficult to systematically account for. The recently developed framework of syndemics provides a way to capture how complex health problems result from the interactions between diseases such as HIV and TB, and harmful social conditions such as unemployment,

Men "missing" from population-based HIV testing: insights from qualitative research.

Men's uptake of HIV testing is critical to the success of "test and treat" strategies in generalized epidemics. This study sought to identify cultural factors and community processes that influence men's HIV testing uptake in the baseline year of an ongoing test-and-treat trial among 334,479 persons in eastern Africa (SEARCH, NCT#01864603). Data were collected using participant observation at mobile community health campaigns (CHCs) (n = 28); focus group discussions (n = 8 groups) with CHC participants; and in-depth interviews with care providers (n = 50), leaders (n = 32), and members (n = 11

Exploring symptoms in patients managed without dialysis: a qualitative research study.

Little is known about the prevalence and burden of symptoms in patients managed without dialysis. This study was the result of a larger study exploring the experiences of 30 such patients and their trajectories to death. Data were analysed relating to symptoms once the patients had been referred to a Renal Supportive Care Service based in the East End of London, UK. A high symptom prevalence was found with 30 different symptoms reported at first consultation. Widely reported symptoms impacting on daily living included breathlessness, oedema, pruritus, nausea and vomiting and pain. Findings ind

Perspectives and ethical considerations for return of genetics and genomics research results: a qualitative study of genomics researchers in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The return of genetics and genomics research results has been a subject of ongoing global debate. Such feedback is ethically desirable to update participants on research findings particularly those deemed clinically significant. Although there is limited literature, debate continues in African on what constitutes appropriate practice regarding the return of results for genetics and genomics research. This study explored perspectives and ethical considerations of Ugandan genomics researchers regarding the return of genetics and genomics research results. METHODS: This was a qualita

Ethics of medical care and clinical research: a qualitative study of principal investigators in biomedical HIV prevention research.

In clinical research there is a tension between the role of a doctor, who must serve the best interests of the patient, and the role of the researcher, who must produce knowledge that may not have any immediate benefits for the research participant. This tension is exacerbated in HIV research in low and middle income countries, which frequently uncovers comorbidities other than the condition under study. Some bioethicists argue that as the goals of medicine and those of research are distinct, it is a mistake for researchers to assume therapeutic responsibilities while engaging in research. Oth

Society of Family Planning Research Practice Support: Digital and data security for abortion research in a post-Dobbs era-A primer for qualitative researchers.

Abortion is banned or severely restricted in nearly half of the United States. Research on the impact of these restrictions and abortion care has never been more critical. Yet the surveillance and criminalization of people seeking abortion care, self-managing an abortion, providing abortion care, or helping people access abortion care present significant threats and concerns to them and abortion researchers. This paper reviews foundational concepts in digital and data security, and provides key suggestions, specifically for abortion researchers conducting qualitative research studies. In this

Qualitative Research Methods to Advance Research on Health Inequities Among Previously Incarcerated Women Living With HIV in Alabama.

Justice-involved HIV-positive women have poor health outcomes that constitute health inequities. Researchers have yet to embrace the range of qualitative methods to elucidate how psychosocial histories are connected to pathways of vulnerability to HIV and incarceration for this key population. We used life course narratives and intersubjectivity-predicated on interview dialogue-to investigate how familial and social settings established their social patterning of HIV, incarceration risk, and poor health. Working with two Alabama community-based organizations, we recruited and interviewed 24 HI
