Experiences with health care and health-related quality of life of patients with hematologic malignancies in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: In Mexico, patients with hematologic malignancies (HMs) are characterized by being at high risk and advanced stages at diagnosis and by having a low cure rate; yet information on their experiences with health care and health-related quality of life (HRQL) is scarce. We aimed to evaluate experiences with health care and HRQL of patients with HMs and the association between these patient-reported measures. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in two public oncology hospitals in Mexico City. The study included outpatient cancer patients aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of le

Patient-Reported Outcome and Experience Measures as Quality Metrics of Health Care Quality in Patients Receiving Dialysis.

In dialysis, the inclusion of patient-reported outcomes is relatively new. However, the genesis of patient-reported outcomes as an essential component to measuring the quality of care began over 50 years ago. Although much progress has been made, there are still substantial efforts needed to reach true patient-centeredness in health care quality assessment. Patient-centeredness is an iterative, collaborative process of shared decision-making among stakeholders to identify, address, and resolve issues of importance to patients. This shift to putting patients at the forefront of decision-making

Evaluation of the HEDIS measure of behavioral health care quality. Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set.

OBJECTIVE: The Health Plan Employer Data and Information Set (HEDIS) is the most widely used "report card" system comparing health care plans across different dimensions of performance. HEDIS uses only one measure of the quality of behavioral health care-the rate of follow-up after hospitalization for major affective disorder. This study used data from a national Veterans Affairs database to evaluate the generalizability of the HEDIS behavioral health quality measure. METHODS: Using administrative data from a nationwide sample of 114 VA hospitals, the HEDIS (version 2.5) quality measure was c

Electronic health record data to develop indicators of end-of-life care quality.

OBJECTIVES: An understated disruption to health services from the COVID-19 pandemic was the increase in deaths occurring outside a hospital. Measures to monitor end-of-life care focused on community settings are needed. In this study, we explore the recording and face validity of patient-centric measures of care quality at the end of life which could be derived from primary care electronic records. METHODS: With the approval of National Health Service England, we analysed the OpenSAFELY-TPP electronic healthcare records of over 970 000 patients who died between March 2019 and August 2023, cov

Quality and Safety in Health Care, Part XVII: The ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program.

Mainly due to the positive effect on quality and safety from the Veterans Health Administration National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP), a National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) for private hospitals was begun, which is now under the auspices of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). More than 600 hospitals now participate in the ACS-NSQIP. The information gained by the institutions is typically utilized to initiate quality improvement activities. The ACS-NSQIP also shares information on how to get better results, has national meetings, and provides other support

Development of ASAS quality standards to improve the quality of health and care services for patients with axial spondyloarthritis.

OBJECTIVES: The Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) aimed to develop a set of quality standards (QS) to help improve the quality of healthcare provided to adult patients affected by axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) worldwide. METHODS: An ASAS task force developed a set of QS using a stepwise approach. First, key areas for quality improvement were identified, discussed, rated and agreed on. Thereafter, areas were prioritised and statements for the most important key areas were phrased on consensus. Appropriate quality measures were defined to allow quantification of the

All organizations reported connecting patients to specialty services. Nearly all reported screening for homelessness (90%), facilitating Medicaid enrollment (90%), connecting patients to benefits (94%), addressing underlying causes of homelessness (83%), assistin

Quality of life in women with urinary incontinence seeking care using e-health.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) in women with urinary incontinence (UI) is mainly affected by UI severity, but it is also affected by the UI subtype, comorbidities, age, and socioeconomic status. e-Health is a new method for providing UI treatment. This study aimed to identify factors with the highest impact on QoL in women that turned to e-health for UI self-management. METHODS: We analysed data from three randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated e-health treatments for UI. We included baseline data for 373 women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and 123 women with urgency/m

Quality of life, health care utilization, and control in older adults with asthma.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with asthma have worse quality of life, asthma control and increased health care utilization than do healthy peers. Factors that contribute to this are currently unknown. OBJECTIVE: To identify demographic, psychological or physiologic characteristics associated with asthma quality of life, control and health care utilization in older adults. METHODS: By using a cross-sectional design, subjects older than 65 years with a history of physician-diagnosed asthma were enrolled. Demographic, psychological and physiological characteristics (including spirometry, atopy testi

The Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986: reporting practitioner malpractice and discipline.

This article discusses requirements imposed under the Health Care Quality Improvement Act of 1986 for reporting actions involving malpractice claims and disciplinary proceedings against physicians and other individual health care practitioners. The article also summarizes the implications of companion provisions of the Act which specify mandatory and permissive requirements for obtaining such information in credentialing and quality assurance activities involving those practitioners.

Distance to primary care and its association with health care use and quality of care in Ontario: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In Canada, patients who move may choose to stay on their original family physician's roster, creating long distances to seek primary care. We sought to explore how distance to primary care affected health care use and quality of care. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study in Ontario, Canada, including urban and suburban patients enrolled with a family physician as of Mar. 31, 2023. The primary exposure was patients' travel distance to their physician. Outcomes included emergency department visits, primary care visits, continuity of care, and cancer screening rates. RESUL

Assessing quality of childbirth care provided by skilled health personnel in Exemplar countries.

The world has made progress in increasing the number of births attended by skilled health personnel (SHP), but maternal and neonatal mortality have not declined proportionately. This may indicate that quality of care has not risen at the same rate as SHP coverage. Several 'Exemplar' countries have been previously recognized for outstanding progress in improving maternal and newborn health, and offer a unique opportunity to understand coverage and quality of care provided by SHP. Here we describe quality of care and how it compares with SHP coverage in three Exemplar countries-Nepal, Senegal an

Laboratory data as a quality indicator of health-care-associated infections in England.

Routine diagnostic laboratory results, e.g. numbers of meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteraemias, have been used as health-care-associated infection quality indicators for decades. The English health-care-associated infection quality indicator system was one of the earliest in the world to mandate the collection and public reporting of such data and has been associated with a reduction of MRSA bacteraemias and Clostridium difficile infections but has shown mixed results for other infections. Diagnostic laboratory data vary greatly between hospitals depending not only on th

Oral health and oral health-related quality of life among older adults receiving home health care services: A scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: To map the literature on subjective and objective oral health indicators and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in older adults receiving home health care services (HHCS). BACKGROUND: The proportion of older adults in need of HHCS will increase in the coming years. Previous studies indicate that frail and dependent older adults are at increased risk for oral diseases, due to challenges with daily oral hygiene and regular access to dental services. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four databases were searched in November 2020 for relevant literature. Search terms included a compreh
