OBJECTIVES: Cancer imposes an enormous burden. In China, research on cancer economic burden has primarily focused on the direct economic burden while the indirect economic burden of cancer (IEBC) has been overlooked. Therefore, we aimed to conduct a systematic quantification of IEBC in populations in China.
METHODS: A human capital approach was used to estimate the IEBC. The loss of productivity time was approximated based on disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from the GBD 2021. The labour force participation rate and per capita economic parameters were sourced from various datasets, and

AIMS: It has not been conclusively established whether and to what extent pulmonary embolism (PE) affects health-related quality of life (HrQoL). We aimed to assess the long-term independent association of PE with HrQoL to provide reference values for interventional studies and support quantification of the burden of PE in terms of quality- or disability-adjusted life years (QALYs and DALYs).
METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 1005 patients from a prospective multicenter study, followed 3 and 12 months after PE, were successfully matched to 3058 individuals from the general population of the sam

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a leading malignancy among men globally, with varying incidence across regions. While high-income countries have effectively controlled PCa through early detection and treatment, middle- and low-income regions, including China, are experiencing rising incidence rates. Understanding these trends is crucial for effective prevention and management.
METHODS: Utilizing data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database, we analyzed global and regional trends in age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), years lived with d

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is usually accompanied by metabolic syndrome, which is associated with increased risk of cancer. To inform a tailored cancer screen in patients at higher risks, we estimated the global burden of cancer attributable to metabolic risks.
METHODS: Data of common metabolism-related neoplasms (MRNs) were derived from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. Age-standardized, disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates and death rates of patients with MRNs were extracted from the GBD 2019 database and stratified by metabolic risk, sex, ag

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disorder with a high prevalence among postmenopausal women (PMW), and it is associated with substantial functional impairment and reduced quality of life. To inform targeted prevention strategies for high-risk populations in the U.S., a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of disease burden in this population is needed. We conducted a quantitative analysis of the prevalence, years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of RA among PMW (PMWRA) in the U.S. from 1990 to 2021. In addition, disease t

BACKGROUND: Hair loss causes significant psychosocial distress to patients. Health utility measurements offer an objective, quantitative assessment of health-related quality of life (QOL).
METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study on patients with hair loss between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020. Patient metrics were compared with layperson perception of alopecia, prospectively collected between August 1 and December 31, 2017. Health utility measures were quantified using the visual analog scale (VAS), standard gamble (SG), and time trade-off (TTO) in quality-adjusted life-years

OBJECTIVES: Patient preferences are increasingly important in informing clinical and policy decisions. Health-state utility values (HSUVs) are quantitative measures of people's preferences over different health states. In schizophrenia, there is no clarity about HSUVs across the symptoms' severity spectrum. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize the literature on HSUVs in people with schizophrenia.
METHODS: We searched Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, EconLit, The Cochrane Library, and specialized databases. The studies reporting HSUVs in people with schizophrenia were selected and pooled in a rando

BACKGROUND: Smoking is causally linked to multiple cancers. We present global, regional, and national estimates of smoking-attributable digestive cancers (SADC) burden from 1990 to 2021 to inform smoking policy and cancer control.
METHODS: We analyzed data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, encompassing five subtypes of digestive cancers across 204 countries and territories. We estimated the mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of SADC. Temporal trends were quantified by calculating the estimated annual percentage change (EAPC) of age-standardized rates.

CONTEXT: The burden of vastly different diseases has been used to predict National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding, typically including only 1 year of data. A multi-year analysis of related diseases would provide a more accurate assessment of which diseases are funded appropriately compared to their burden, enabling targeted lobbying efforts and policy changes to ensure equitable funding.
OBJECTIVES: Determining under- or over-funded psychiatric and neurological diseases over a 13-year period.
DESIGN: This ecological study utilized disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) to quanti

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Acute viral hepatitis (AVH) represents an important global health problem; however, the progress in understanding AVH is limited because of the priority of combating persistent HBV and HCV infections. Therefore, an improved understanding of the burden of AVH is required to help design strategies for global intervention.
METHODS: Data on 4 major AVH types, including acute hepatitis A, B, C, and E, excluding D, were collected by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2019 database. Age-standardized incidence rates and disability-adjusted life year (DALY) rates for AVH were extrac

BACKGROUND: Estimates in the research literature on the health-related quality of life (QOL) associated with pneumococcal disease exhibit variation. It complicates the selection of estimates in modeling projects that evaluate the health impact and economic value of the prevention and treatment. This study reviewed the literature and developed pooled QOL estimates associated with pneumococcal disease states.
METHODS: We searched peer-reviewed literature for studies that reported pneumococcal disease-related QOL estimates. For each study, we extracted QOL estimates and categorized by age group

Health metrics based on health-adjusted life years have become standard units for comparing the disease burden and treatment benefits of individual health conditions. The Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY) and the Quality-Adjusted Life Year (QALY) are the most frequently used in cost-effect analyses in national and global health policy discussions for allocation of health care resources. While sometimes useful, both the DALY and QALY metrics have limitations in their ability to capture the full health impact of helminth infections and other 'neglected tropical diseases' (NTDs). Gaps in curre

Ideally, policies aiming to tackle zoonotic diseases in animals and reduce the burden of disease in humans should be based on an assessment of the cost and benefits of alternative interventions. However, while the cost of actions targeting diseases in animals and humans and the benefits in terms of increased livestock production can be monetized, it is a challenge to monetize improvements in the quality of life or to life expectancy extensions in humans in zoonotic policy evaluations. This paper proposes a method to monetize the human health benefits derived from zoonotic disease reduction and

BACKGROUND: Maternal morbidity and mortality, encompassing pregnancy-related complications and obstetric disorders, pose a persistent global health challenge with significant multigenerational consequences. As the second leading cause of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) among women of reproductive age globally, these conditions exert profound impacts on perinatal outcomes and intergenerational health equity. The Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD), recognized as the most comprehensive epidemiological surveillance system, provides critical evidence for optimizing maternal health policies

BACKGROUND: The disability weight quantifies the severity of health states from diseases and injuries. It is a fundamental index to estimate the disability-adjusted life year in the Global Burden of Disease studies. Disability weight estimates have been shown to vary across different national populations, suggesting the influence of cultural differences. However, survey data of disability weights in the Global Burden of Disease study is still limited worldwide.
OBJECTIVES: To more accurately reflect the true health conditions of global populations, this study aims to systematically summarize
