Chitosan encapsulated quantum dots platform for leukemia detection.

We report results of the studies relating to electrophoretic deposition of nanostructured composite of chitosan (CS)-cadmium-telluride quantum dots (CdTe-QDs) onto indium-tin-oxide coated glass substrate. The high resolution transmission electron microscopic studies of the nanocomposite reveal molecular level coating of the CdTe-QDs with CS molecules in the colloidal dispersion medium. This novel composite platform has been explored to fabricate an electrochemical DNA biosensor for detection of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) by immobilizing amine terminated oligonucleotide probe sequence c

Bioconjugation of InGaP quantum dots for molecular sensing.

Fluorescence-based molecular sensing and cellular imaging are commonly carried out with the application of organic dyes. Quantum dots (QDs) are now recognized as better tools because they are brighter, size tunable, and more photostable than dyes. Most of the proposed QD-based biosensing systems involve elements of known toxicity. The present work reports the functionalization of biocompatible InGaP/ZnS core-shell QDs with anti-bovine serum albumin (anti-BSA) to exploit them as fluorescent probes for antigen detection. Successful bioconjugation was characterized with the absorption and emissio

Analytical applications of enzymatic growth of quantum dots.

We have developed an analytical assay to detect the enzymatic activity of acetylcholine esterase and alkaline phosphatase based on the generation of quantum dots by enzymatic products. Acetylcholine esterase converts acetylthiocholine into thiocholine. The latter enhances the rate of decomposition of sodium thiosulfate into H(2)S, which in the presence of cadmium sulfate yields CdS quantum dots showing a time dependent exponential growth, typical of autocatalytic processes. This assay was also applied to detect acetylcholine esterase inhibitors. Alkaline phosphatase hydrolyzes thiophosphate an

Imaging pancreatic cancer using bioconjugated InP quantum dots.

In this paper, we report the successful use of non-cadmium-based quantum dots (QDs) as highly efficient and nontoxic optical probes for imaging live pancreatic cancer cells. Indium phosphide (core)-zinc sulfide (shell), or InP/ZnS, QDs with high quality and bright luminescence were prepared by a hot colloidal synthesis method in nonaqueous media. The surfaces of these QDs were then functionalized with mercaptosuccinic acid to make them highly dispersible in aqueous media. Further bioconjugation with pancreatic cancer specific monoclonal antibodies, such as anticlaudin 4 and antiprostate stem c

Toxicity of CdTe quantum dots in bacterial strains.

Contradictory results on quantum dot cytotoxicity exist for many types of biological systems, especially microorganisms. In this study, we compare the cytotoxicity of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) to four very different environmental bacterial strains, giving quantitative models of the growth curves for exposed organisms. The mechanisms of toxicity are explored by measuring reactive oxygen species generation by the QDs alone and investigating the oxidative damage to mutant bacteria especially sensitive to ROS. Electron microscopic examination also reveals factors that may contribute to resistance to

Mechanism of antimicrobial activity of CdTe quantum dots.

The antimicrobial activity and mechanism of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) against Escherichia coli were investigated in this report. Colony-forming capability assay and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images show that the QDs can effectively kill the bacteria in a concentration-dependent manner. Results of photoluminescence spectrophotometry, confocal microscopy, and antioxidative response tests indicate that the QDs bind with bacteria and impair the functions of a cell's antioxidative system, including down-regulations of antioxidative genes and decreases of antioxidative enzymes activities. The oxid

Improved performance of nanowire-quantum-dot-polymer solar cells by chemical treatment of the quantum dot with ligand and solvent materials.

We report a nanowire-quantum-dot-polymer solar cell consisting of a chemically treated CdSe quantum dot film deposited on n-type ZnO nanowires. The electron and hole collecting contacts are a fluorine-doped tin-oxide/zinc oxide layer and a P3HT/Au layer. This device architecture allows for enhanced light absorption and an efficient collection of photogenerated carriers. A detailed analysis of the chemical treatment of the quantum dots, their deposition, and the necessary annealing processes are discussed. We find that the surface treatment of CdSe quantum dots with pyridine, and the use of 1,2

The ratiometric fluorescent sensor based on the mixture of CdTe quantum dots and graphene quantum dots for quantitative analysis of silver in drinks.

Silver nanoparticles can be used in antibacterial packaging or disinfection. Research has shown that sugary fluid induces the leaching of silver nanoparticles into water, which may be harmful to humans. Single wavelength fluorescence analysis has been used for quantitative analysis of silver nanoparticles but suffers from low specificity and poor anti-interference ability. In this paper, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor system (GCS) was used for the detection of Ag+, which realized both visual detection and quantitative analysis of silver in drinks. The color changes of GCS with different con

Reduced charge recombination in a co-sensitized quantum dot solar cell with two different sizes of CdSe quantum dot.

An efficient photoelectrode is fabricated by sequentially assembling 2.5 nm and 3.5 nm CdSe quantum dots (QDs) onto a TiO2 film. As revealed by UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, two sizes of CdSe QD can be effectively adsorbed on the TiO2 film. With a broader light absorption range and better coverage of CdSe QDs on the TiO2 film, a power conversion efficiency of 1.26% has been achieved for the TiO2/CdSe QD (2.5 nm)/CdSe QD (3.5 nm) cell under the illumination of one Sun (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm(-2)). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy shows that the electron lifetime for the device based on TiO2

Entropy Spectroscopy of a Bilayer Graphene Quantum Dot.

We measure the entropy change of charge transitions in an electrostatically defined quantum dot in bilayer graphene. Entropy provides insights into the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of both ground and excited states beyond transport measurements. For the one-carrier regime, the obtained entropy shows that the ground state has a twofold degeneracy lifted by an out-of-plane magnetic field. This observation is in agreement with previous direct transport measurements and confirms the applicability of this novel method. For the two-carrier regime, the extracted entropy indicates a nondegener

Holistic Investigation of Graphene Quantum Dot Endocytosis.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have gained popularity in nano-biotechnology due to their multifunctional delivery and imaging capabilities. The outcome of their therapeutic delivery applications relies on understanding cell internalization routes. Current literature presents often conflicting results based on surveying only a few endocytosis inhibitors. Herein, a holistic approach to cell uptake studies by utilizing six different inhibitors while considering their on- and off-target effects on internalization of the GQDs of different charges is provided. Endocytosis paths are explored by trackin

Carbon quantum dots for the detection of antibiotics and pesticides.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are novel nanomaterials with interesting physical and chemical properties, which are intensely studied only in the last decade. Unique properties, such as its inherent fluorescent property, high resistance to photobleaching, high surface area, ease of synthesis, flexible choice of precursor, and surface tunability enable CQDs for promising application in biosensing. Therefore, it is highly useful in clinical, forensic, medical, food and drug analyses, disease diagnosis, and various other fields of biosensing. In addition, their fluorescence properties are tunable by

Electrophoretic Deposition of Quantum Dots and Characterisation of Composites.

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is an emerging technique in nanomaterial-based device fabrication. Here, we report an in-depth study of this approach as a means to deposit colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), in a range of solvents. For the first time, we report the significant improvement of EPD performance via the use of dichloromethane (DCM) for deposition of CQDs, producing a corresponding CQD-TiO2 composite with a near 10-fold increase in quantum dot loading relative to more commonly used solvents such as chloroform or toluene. We propose this effect is due to the higher dielectric constant of

Cytotoxicity studies of quantum dots with the electroporation method.

In this study, the cytotoxicity of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) of various dimensions was examined using the electroporation method. The influence of the size of QDs on normal and tumour cell viability after 24 h of incubation with nanomaterials was examined. The three human cell lines were chosen for the tests: A549 (a tumour cell line derived from the lung), MRC-5 (normal fibroblasts from the lung) and HaCaT (normal keratinocytes from the skin). Accordingly, we modelled the effect of nanocrystals on various human tissues because nanoparticles can be introduced into an organism through different r

Methods to Characterize the Oligonucleotide Functionalization of Quantum Dots.

Currently, DNA nanotechnology offers the most programmable, scalable, and accurate route for the self-assembly of matter with nanometer precision into 1, 2, or 3D structures. One example is DNA origami that is well suited to serve as a molecularly defined "breadboard", and thus, to organize various nanomaterials such as nanoparticles into hybrid systems. Since the controlled assembly of quantum dots (QDs) is of high interest in the field of photonics and other optoelectronic applications, a more detailed view on the functionalization of QDs with oligonucleotides shall be achieved. In this work

Evaluation of biological activity of quantum dots in a microsystem.

The presented work aimed at systematic investigation of biological activity of CdSex S1- x /ZnS and CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs), whose surface was modified with different ligands. For these studies, we used a microfluidic system combined with fluorescence microscopy techniques, which enabled analysis of cells' morphology, viability, and QDs uptake. PDMS and glass-based microfluidic system enabled the precise control of the cell environment, allowed to examine five replications of each tested QDs concentrations (statistically significant number), monitor multiple cellular events, and avoid manu

Photoreactivity of a quantum dot-ruthenium nitrosyl conjugate.

We describe the use of cadmium telluride quantum dots (CdTe QDs) as antennas for the photosensitization of nitric oxide release from a ruthenium nitrosyl complex with visible light excitation. The CdTe QDs were capped with mercaptopropionic acid to make them water-soluble, and the ruthenium nitrosyl complex was cis-[Ru(NO)(4-ampy)(bpy)2](3+) (Ru-NO; bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine, and 4-ampy is 4-aminopyridine). Solutions of these two components demonstrated concentration-dependent quenching of the QD photoluminescence (PL) as well as photoinduced release of NO from Ru-NO when irradiated by 530 nm lig

Perspectives on the toxicology of cadmium-based quantum dots.

As the number of applications of quantum dots (QDs) grows, the likelihood of exposure increases. Because these metals have the potential for detrimental environmental and health effects, concerns have been raised over our lack of understanding about the fate of these products. Among various types of QDs, cadmium-based quantum dots attract the greatest attention due to their wide applications. To properly assess the potential risk of cadmium-containing QDs, we summarize the current state of academic knowledge on the toxicity of cadmium-based QDs.

Influence of quantum dots on the aromaticity of thiosalicylic acid.

When ligands are coordinated to quantum dots (QDs), the ring current of the ligand strongly influences the applications of the QDs, for example in solar cell technology. The Raman spectrum of the ligand can be used to probe and identify ions or measure ion concentrations. Here, we investigated, using a theoretical method, the aromaticities and Raman spectra of CdTe, CdSe, and CdS QDs coordinated with thiosalicylic acid ligands. We found that the aromaticity of the benzene ring in free thiosalicylic acid increased when it was used as a QD ligand. The ring currents of the benzene rings in the Cd
