BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Flavonoids, including quercetin, have attracted much attention due to their potential health-promoting effects.
METHODS: The current experiment aims to see whether quercetin (QUE) in nanoparticle form could mitigate testicular and renal toxicity caused by cisplatin (CIS) more effectively than normally formulated QUE. Rats were randomly treated with CIS alone or in combination with QUE or QUE.NPs (Quercetin-loaded chitosan nanoparticles) for 4 weeks. QUE and QUE.NPs were given orally (10 mg/kg, three times a week), while CIS was given intraperitoneally (2 mg/kg, twice a

Periodontitis is characterized by bacterial infection, elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), excessive inflammation, and immune imbalance. Consequently, there is an urgent need to devise promising strategies capable of simultaneously combating infection, alleviating oxidative stress, suppressing inflammation, and regulating immunity in periodontitis management. Herein, an injectable silk fibroin/quercetin (SFQ) natural hydrogel was developed through self-assembly. The quercetin-silk fibroin interaction and the quercetin-enhanced β-sheet formed the self-assembled dual-network structure, bring

Neuroinflammation, a central pathological mechanism in central nervous system disorders, remains challenging to treat due to the restrictive nature of the blood-brain barrier and poor drug delivery efficiency. In this study, we developed a novel intranasal brain-targeted delivery system by constructing peptide-modified quercetin liposomes (QuR-lipo). By using intranasal administration to bypass the blood-brain barrier, QuR-lipo demonstrated higher uptake and accumulation in the brain compared to unmodified liposomes. This system disrupts the vicious cycle between neuroinflammation and oxidativ

In this study, the interaction between quercetin and Fagopyrum tataricum starch, as well as the mechanism by which it increases the RS content, was analyzed. The results showed: (1) at 5% addition, RS content reached 60.38%. (2) Quercetin penetrated starch granules and blocked pore structures, reducing the accessible surface area and hindering amylase hydrolysis: the first mechanism for RS increase. (3) The internal quercetin formed stable complexes with starch molecules (90 kJ/mol binding energy, 7H-bonds), reconstructing the hydrogen bonding network, altering molecular arrangement, and modif

OBJECTIVES: Renal fibrosis represents the principal pathological characteristic of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Quercetin, a well-known flavonoid with diverse pharmacological effects, has been studied for its link to preventing DN. Previous studies indicated that SIRT5 might have significant implications in fibrotic diseases. This study investigated whether the protective effects of quercetin on DN was related to SIRT5.
METHODS: Three doses of quercetin (30 mg/kg, 60 mg/kg, and 120 mg/kg) were orally administered to streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats over a period of four months. Colorimetric

Quercetin, a dietary flavonol enriched in food, regulates immune-related models through epigenetic modifications. However, few studies have explored the transmission of regulatory effects across generations to the progeny. Here, we selected Escherichia coli, a conditional pathogen capable of causing gastrointestinal infections or various localized tissue and organ infections under specific conditions, as the pathogenic strain to infect mice. We provide evidence that quercetin can not only induce responsiveness changes against systemic E. coli infection in directly exposed organisms, but also i

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cigarette smoking has been reported as an independent risk factor for periodontitis. Tobacco toxins affect periodontal tissue not only locally but also systemically, leading to the deterioration and recurrence of periodontitis. However, the mechanism of cigarette smoke-related periodontitis (CSRP) is unclear and thus lacks targeted treatment strategies. Quercetin, a plant-derived polyphenolic flavonoid, has been reported to have therapeutic effects on periodontitis due to its documented antioxidant activity. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of quercetin on CS

It suggests that the poly (3-hydroxybutyric acid-co-3-hydroxyvaleric acid) (PHBV) scaffold can be used for cartilage tissue engineering, but PHBV is short of bioactivity that is required for cartilage regeneration. To fabricate a bioactive cartilage tissue engineering scaffold that promotes cartilage regeneration, quercetin (QUE) modified PHBV (PHBV-g-QUE) fibrous scaffolds were prepared by a two-step surface modification method. The PHBV-g-QUE fibrous scaffold facilitates the growth of chondrocytes and maintains chondrocytic phenotype resulting from the upregulation of SOX9, COL II, and ACAN.

Various natural proteins are finding application in drug delivery for their high biodegradability and biocompatibility. Albumins are well explored and now focus is shifting to other proteins like hemoglobin (Hb) with unique structural properties. In the present study Hb is allowed to denature at pH 5.0 and model hydrophobic drug quercetin (Q) is encapsulated via self-assembly and hydrophobic interactions. Fluorimetric titrations record highest binding between Hb and Q at pH 5.0, rendering significant structural changes in Hb as captured in CD spectra. A decrease in fluorescence life time of tr

We previously reported that the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction of a 70% ethanol extract of Elaeocarpus sylvestris (ESE) inhibits varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) replication in vitro. PGG (1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-ß-D-glucose) is a major chemical constituent of the EtOAc fraction of ESE that inhibits VZV but not HCMV replication. In this study, we comprehensively screened the chemical compounds identified in the EtOAc fraction of ESE for potential antiviral properties. Among the examined compounds, quercetin and isoquercitrin displayed potent antiviral activities

Quercetin is a dietary flavonoid that shows effective neuroprotective action in cellular and animal models of Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease. However, its therapeutic application is limited due to low water solubility and cytotoxicity at the working concentration in the 20-100 μM range. Here we report a nanoparticle form of quercetin (nanoquercetin) that shows antiamyloidogenic performance at lower quercetin concentration (one micromolar) and inhibits polyglutamine (mutant huntingtin) aggregation in Huntington's disease cell model. Nanoquercetin is composed of a polyaspartic acid

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the commonest cause of global mortality and morbidity. Atherosclerosis, the fundamental pathological manifestation of CVDs, is a complex process and is poorly managed both in terms of preventive and therapeutic intervention. Aberrant lipid metabolism and chronic inflammation play critical roles in the development of atherosclerosis. These processes can be targeted for effective management of the disease. Although managing lipid metabolism is in the forefront of current therapeutic approaches, controlling inflammation may also prove to be crucial for an effici

OBJECTIVES: Quercetin is a plant flavonoid known for its pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. However, there is limited information available regarding its potential toxicities. A previous study showed that quercetin can inhibit human ether-a-go-related gene (hERG, also named KCNH2) currents, which may lead to long QT syndrome, torsade de pointes (TdP), and even sudden cardiac death. This study aimed to investigate the effects of quercetin on hERG and its potential mechanism.

Quercetin is a polyphenol of the flavonoid class of secondary metabolites that is widely distributed in the plant kingdom. Quercetin has been found to exhibit potent bioactivity in the areas of wound healing, neuroprotection, and anti-aging research. Naturally found in highly glycosylated forms, aglycone quercetin has low solubility in aqueous environments, which has heavily limited its clinical applications. To improve the stability and bioavailability of quercetin, efforts have been made to chemically modify quercetin and related flavonoids so as to improve aqueous solubility while retaining
