Late Oligocene fossil acorns and nuts of Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis from the Nanning Basin, Guangxi, South China.

Quercus is the largest genus within the Fagaceae and has a rich fossil record. Most of the fossil material is attributed to the subgenus Quercus based on leaves, pollen or rarely acorns and nuts. Fossil records of Q. section Cyclobalanopsis characterized by ring-cupped acorns are relatively few and especially those described based on nuts are scant. In this study, we described four new species of Quercus section Cyclobalanopsis based on mummified acorns and nuts: Q. paleodisciformis X.Y. Liu et J.H. Jin sp. nov., Q. paleohui X.Y. Liu et J.H. Jin sp. nov., Q. nanningensis X.Y. Liu et J.H. Jin s

Contrasting elevational patterns of soil and root-associated fungal communities highlight host-driven filtering in Quercus wutaishansea forests.

The role of plant hosts in shaping root-associated microbial communities remains a central question in ecology, particularly in the face of changing environmental conditions. While considerable attention has been paid to soil microbial diversity, the interactive dynamics between plant individuals and soil microbial pool during root-associated fungi establishment across environmental gradients remain poorly understood. In this study, we explored the elevational variation in the diversity of soil and root-associated fungal communities of Quercus wutaishansea across ten elevational belts (1020 m-

A Bacillus pretiosus Biofertilizer Enhances Early Growth, Nutritional Profile, and Rhizospheric Dynamics in Quercus Species for Forest Restoration.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPBs) have emerged as essential biological inputs to improve the establishment, physiological performance and survival of forest species used in ecological restoration programs. The decline of Quercus forests throughout the Mediterranean basin requires innovative and sustainable strategies to improve early seedling establishment. Among possible PGBs, Bacillus pretiosus has attracted significant interest due to its ability to promote plant growth, modulate the nutrient status of the host, and safely interact with native rhizosphere microbiota. At the same time,

Variations in Acorn Characteristics Between Two Mediterranean Quercus Species and Their Hybrids Through Contrasting Environmental Gradients in Spain.

Oaks are characterized by high plasticity and intense interspecific gene flow due to natural hybridization. This generates a wide phenotypic spectrum, which creates taxonomic confusion within the genus. We compared the acorn traits across a temperature gradient in two types of Mediterranean Quercus (Quercus faginea Lam. and Q. pyrenaica Willd.) and their hybrids. Genetic groups were identified using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLPs) analysis. Acorns sampled from each of the three genetic groups were used for comparative purposes by means of 15 morphological characteristics. Eight

Inventory of vascular plants and conservation-related taxa in pure Quercus mongolica stands in Gangwon-do, South Korea.

Pure Quercus mongolica stands are a major component of temperate deciduous broad-leaved forests in South Korea and provide important habitats for vascular plant diversity. Although Q. mongolica forests have been widely studied in terms of community structure, succession and relationships with environmental factors, large-scale plot-based floristic information focused specifically on stands in which Q. mongolica dominates the canopy layer remains limited. This study aimed to document the vascular flora of pure Q. mongolica stands in Gangwon-do and to provide baseline information for floristic d

Anthropogenic NOx emissions alter the intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi) for Quercus cerris stands under Mediterranean climate conditions.

We investigated the effect of N deposition (Ndep) on intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi), the ratio of photosynthesis (A) to stomatal conductance (gs), for two Quercus cerris stands at different distances to an oil refinery in Southern Italy. We used delta13C in tree rings for assessing changes in WUEi; while the influence of climate and NOx emission was explored through delta18O and delta15N, respectively. Differences in WUEi between the two sites were significant, with trees exposed to different degrees of NOx emissions showing an abrupt increase with the onset of pollution. Assuming simil

Garryanalyzer: A morphometric workflow and open-source ImageJ plug-in for quantitative morphological analysis of Pacific Northwest Quercus leaves.

PREMISE: Accurate species identification is crucial for ecological restoration and can be especially challenging for understudied non-model species. Quercus garryana is the only native oak species in the Pacific Northwest and is an important component of the endangered oak savanna ecosystem. Quercus robur is an imported ornamental species from Europe and has been found to be mistakenly planted as Q. garryana in habitat restoration projects. METHODS: We measured leaf morphological traits sampled from herbarium collections in their native ranges using the digital morphometric tools MorphoLeaf a

Elevated CO2 buffers negative impacts of heat stress on short-term growth adjustments of 180 year-old Quercus robur.

Rising atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration are a primary driver of global warming and are expected to be associated with more frequent droughts, greater temperatures, and increased vapour pressure deficit (VPD). These factors are all key drivers of tree mortality. While elevated CO2 (eCO2) enhances photosynthesis (Anet) and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), its capacity to mitigate heat stress in mature trees under field conditions remains poorly understood. We investigated the effects of eCO2 on the physiological and growth responses of mature Quercus robur (~180 years old) at
