Illness Burden in Adults With Cystic Fibrosis: Associations With Sex, Race/Ethnicity, and Socioeconomic Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Illness burden in cystic fibrosis (CF) is variable and sociodemographic characteristics-including female sex, minoritized race/ethnicity, and lower socioeconomic status (SES)-may increase the risk of burden. More information about these associations is needed. METHODS: This secondary analysis used baseline data from adults with CF (AwCF) participating in a palliative care implementation trial who completed questionnaires, including the Integrated Palliative Care Outcome Scale, Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale-Cystic Fibrosis, and Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire-Revised. Bivariate a

Preventable causes of cancer in Texas by race/ethnicity: Major modifiable risk factors in the population.

BACKGROUND: A number of modifiable risk factors have been designated as being causally related to cancer development. We aimed to estimate the percentage of incident cancer cases diagnosed in persons aged ≥25 years in Texas in 2015, overall and by race/ethnicity, that were attributable to these modifiable risk factors. METHODS: We calculated population attributable fractions (PAFs) for cancers attributable to thirteen modifiable risk factors using prevalence data from the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, as well as rela

Multilevel Factors Associated With Time to Biopsy After Abnormal Screening Mammography Results by Race and Ethnicity.

IMPORTANCE: Diagnostic delays in breast cancer detection may be associated with later-stage disease and higher anxiety, but data on multilevel factors associated with diagnostic delay are limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate individual-, neighborhood-, and health care-level factors associated with differences in time from abnormal screening to biopsy among racial and ethnic groups. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study used data from women aged 40 to 79 years who had abnormal results in screening mammograms conducted in 109 imaging facilities across 6 US states between

Independent Risk Factors Predicting Gradual Onset Injury in 2824 Trail Running Race Entrants: SAFER XVIII Study.

INTRODUCTION: Trail running is characterized by elevation changes, with uneven and varying running surfaces. Risk factors that may predict gradual-onset running-related injuries (GORRIs) in short-distance trail running have not been explored. The objective was to determine risk factors that predict GORRIs in trail running race entrants who entered mass community-based trail running events. METHODS: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, data were collected prospectively from a prerace medical screening questionnaire over 4 trail run events held annually. Using a Poisson regression model,

Influence of race/ethnicity on cardiovascular risk factors in polycystic ovary syndrome, the Dallas Heart Study.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is estimated to affect up to 20% of women. PCOS is associated with insulin resistance and cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. We aimed to evaluate the impact of race/ethnicity on the prevalence of CV risk factors and subclinical predictors of CV events. DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of data collected by the Dallas Heart Study, an urban, population-based cohort oversampled for blacks. PATIENTS: A previously described cohort of women with PCOS and control subjects of the same racial/ethnic group, matched for age and body mass index. MEASUREMENTS:

Race and other risk factors for incident proteinuria in a national cohort of HIV-infected veterans.

BACKGROUND: Proteinuria in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected individuals has been associated with poorer outcomes. We examined risk factors associated with the development of proteinuria in a national registry of HIV-infected veterans. METHODS: A total of 21,129 HIV-infected veterans of black and white race without preexisting kidney disease were receiving health care in the Veterans' Health Administration (VHA) medical system between 1997 and 2011. Using the VHA electronic record system, we identified kidney-related risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease)

Race and ethnic differences in the epidemiology and risk factors for graft failure after heart transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary epidemiology of chronic graft failure (GF) after heart transplantation (HT) is not well described. Moreover, differences in the epidemiology of GF based on race/ethnicity remain poorly understood, despite clear evidence of inferior survival of ethnic minorities after HT. METHODS: The incidence of GF and the population-attributable risk (PAR) of independent risk factors for GF were assessed in 15,255 patients (76% men; mean age 52 ± 12 years) who underwent primary HT from 2004 to 2012. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 4.7 years (interquartile range, 2.3-7.1 years

Race, homelessness, and other environmental factors associated with the food-purchasing behavior of low-income women.

Observance of the hunger-obesity paradox in urban Minnesota has ignited interest in the quality of low-income households' food purchases. This cross-sectional study investigated low-income, urban Minnesotan women's past-month food purchases and their associations with race, homelessness, and aspects of the food system, including food shelf (ie, food pantry) and food store usage, factors believed to influence food choice and grocery shopping behavior. The survey included demographics, the US Department of Agriculture's 18-item Household Food Security Survey Module, and grocery shopping question

Race, age, and back pain as factors in completion of residential substance abuse treatment by veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Variables associated with successful completion of residential substance abuse treatment were identified. METHODS: The records of 340 veterans admitted to a 120-day substance abuse treatment program were retrospectively analyzed. The likelihood of successful treatment completion was calculated as a function of race, age, gender, psychiatric diagnosis, past suicide attempts, homelessness, legal history, childhood physical or sexual abuse, parental history of addiction, multiple substance dependence, medical problems, and the race of the therapist. Medical Tent Utilization at 10-km Road Races: Injury, Illness, and Influencing Factors.

PURPOSE: To increase awareness of the need for coordinated medical care at 10-km races and to help direct future medical planning for these events. METHODS: We related medical encounter data from nineteen 10-km road races to runner, race, and environmental characteristics. We quantified the most commonly used resources and described the disposition of runners in these encounters. RESULTS: Across the 19 races and 90,265 finishers, there were 562 medical events for a cumulative incidence of 6.2 events per 1000 finishers (95% confidence interval, 5.7-6.8). Race size was associated with an incre

Black Race and Body Mass Index Are Risk Factors for Rhabdomyolysis and Acute Kidney Injury in Trauma.

Purpose: Obesity has been shown in a single-center study to be a risk factor for rhabdomyolysis. More recently, sickle cell trait, known to be more prevalent in blacks, has been shown to be a risk factor for rhabdomyolysis. We hypothesized that in trauma patients, black race and a higher body mass index (BMI) are associated with risk for rhabdomyolysis and acute kidney injury (AKI). Materials and Methods: The National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) was queried (2013-2015) to identify patients age ≥18 years and grouped by BMI: normal (18.5-24.99 kg/m2), underweight (16.5-18.49 kg/m2), overweight (25-2

Multiple-component remediation for developmental reading disabilities: IQ, socioeconomic status, and race as factors in remedial outcome.

Results from a controlled evaluation of remedial reading interventions are reported: 279 young disabled readers were randomly assigned to a program according to a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design (IQ, socioeconomic status [SES], and race). The effectiveness of two multiple-component intervention programs for children with reading disabilities (PHAB + RAVE-O; PHAB + WIST) was evaluated against alternate (CSS, MATH) and phonological control programs. Interventions were taught an hour daily for 70 days on a 1:4 ratio at three different sites. Multiple-component programs showed significant improvements

STD and HIV risk factors among U.S. young adults: variations by gender, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation.

CONTEXT: STDs, including HIV, disproportionately affect individuals who have multiple minority identities. Understanding differences in STD risk factors across racial, ethnic and sexual minority groups, as well as genders, is important for tailoring public health interventions. METHODS: Data from Waves 3 (2001-2002) and 4 (2007-2008) of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health were used to develop population-based estimates of STD and HIV risk factors among 11,045 young adults (mean age, 29 at Wave 4), by gender, race and ethnicity, and sexual orientation (heterosexual, mixed-orie

An Assessment of Race as a Risk Factor for Doxorubicin-Related Cardiotoxicity in Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Doxorubicin carries a risk of congestive heart failure (CHF). Black race has been suggested as a risk factor for doxorubicin-related cardiotoxicity, but data are limited. We assessed whether HF occurs at higher rates in Black patients compared to White patients who receive doxorubicin for DLBCL, and evaluated race as an independent risk factor for the development of HF after adjusting for known risk factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We used SEER-Medicare to identify patients 66 years and older with DLBCL. We excluded patients with CHF documented prior to diagnosis with DLBCL. We asse

Anxiety may be a risk factor for experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms during endurance races: An observational study.

Scarce research has examined the links between stress, anxiety, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms during competition, despite that they are positively correlated in the general population. A total of 186 endurance athletes completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)-14, Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI)-3, and State-Trait Inventory for Cognitive and Somatic Anxiety (STICSA) before races. Afterwards, they reported the severity of in-race GI symptoms. Associations between high levels of stress and anxiety (defined as the top tertile) and GI distress (≥3 on a 0-10 scale) were examined using logisti

Impact of traditional risk factors for the outcomes of atrial fibrillation across race and ethnicity and sex groups.

BACKGROUND: Although traditional risk factors for atrial fibrillation (AF) and its outcomes are established in whites, their role in the pathogenesis of AF across race-ethnicity and both sexes remain unclear. Cohort studies have consistently shown worse AF-related outcomes in these groups. The objective of this study was to determine the role played by race- and sex-specific risk factors in AF outcomes in non-Hispanic blacks (NHBs), Hispanics/Latinos (H/Ls), and non-Hispanic whites (NHWs). METHODS: Using electronic health records (EHR), 3607 patients with an ICD-9 code for AF were identified
