The results of rehabilitation of 52 patients with radial nerve injuries were comparatively analyzed: the traditional rehabilitation complex (massage, training, etc.) was compared with the method of functional biomanagement. The technical characteristics of the designed functional cast were thoroughly described. The study demonstrated that reinnervation and functional recovery of the denervated muscles without segmental influence were significantly slower.

It is important for physicians who treat upper extremity disorders to understand motor palsy or pain syndromes caused by compression of the median and radial nerves about the elbow and forearm. Patients with anterior interosseous nerve syndrome may report hand weakness, whereas those with pronator syndrome may present with pain and paresthesia that can be confused with carpal tunnel syndrome. Patients with posterior interosseous nerve syndrome report hand weakness, whereas those with radial tunnel syndrome report pain in the lateral elbow and forearm, which may be confused with lateral epicond

BACKGROUND Secondary neurolymphomatosis is a rare clinical condition that may be observed in patients with hematologic malignancies. Clinical findings can overlap with other conditions. Diagnosis can be obtained by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and imaging with positron emission tomography (PET) and confirmed by biopsy. CASE REPORT A 55-year-old male patient with known previous history of periocular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type presented reporting he had a focal soft-tissue swelling mass on the external side of the right arm, suspected for lipoma. US,

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve palsies of the upper extremities presenting at birth can be distressing for families and care providers. It is therefore important to be able to identify patients whose diagnosis is compatible with full recovery so that their families can be reassured.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all infants presenting with weakness of the upper extremity to our clinic between July 1995 and September 2009. We also conducted a review of the current literature.
RESULTS: During the study period, 953 infants presented to our clinic. Of these patients, 25 were iden

The superficial branch of the radial nerve (SBRN) is highly vulnerable to trauma and iatrogenic injury. This study aimed to map the course of the SBRN in the context of surgical approaches and identify a safe area of incision for de Quervain's tenosynovitis. Twenty-five forearms were dissected. The SBRN emerged from under brachioradialis by a mean of 8.31 cm proximal to the radial styloid (RS), and remained radial to the dorsal tubercle of the radius by a mean of 1.49 cm. The nerve divided into a median of four branches. The first branch arose a mean of 4.92 cm proximal to the RS, traveling 0.

PURPOSE: To present an uncommon lesion of radial nerve paralysis with multiple constrictions.
METHOD: Eight patients were treated in our department between January 1994 and August 2000. There were 4 men and 4 women with a mean age of 26 years (10-43 y). The radial nerves of all patients were explored. There were 1 to 5 segmental constrictive lesions at the main trunks of the radial nerves or the posterior interosseous nerves; no obvious extrinsic compression was noted. Epineurolysis was performed in 3 patients, in the other 5 patients the constricted portions of the nerves were resected, and

Symptoms of tunnel pathologies of the radial nerve in the ulnar region were analyzed in 39 patients (48 arms). Of importance in the tunnel neuropathy development is an overstrain of the short radial extensor of the wrist and the supinator which are in a close anatomical contact with the radial nerve branches. The affection of the radial nerve manifests in a sharp painfulness on the lateral surface of the ulnar region. The pains irradiate in the distal direction. Sensitivity disturbances within the autonomous zone innervated by the radial nerve were revealed in 17, and a moderate paresis of the

Nerve transfers are an increasingly popular method for surgical treatment of nerve injuries. One of the most popular of these is the transfer of radial nerve triceps fascicles to the axillary nerve. The most common approach for this transfer is the posterior approach, which gives excellent access to both nerves but is not easy to combine with other nerve transfers. We describe here an alternative, the anterior approach, that offers safe access to both radial and axillary nerves and has the added advantage of compatibility with approaches for other common nerve transfers.

Nerve transfers for brachial plexus reconstruction and the treatment of peripheral nerve injury have demonstrated excellent clinical outcomes and may be superior to nerve grafting. Previously described nerve transfers for restoration of elbow flexion include the Oberlin (ulnar to musculocutaneous) and double fasicular (median to biceps and ulnar to brachialis) transfers. However, these transfers cannot be performed in patients with loss of elbow flexion and concomitant high median and ulnar nerve injury. Other transfers utilizing the thoracodorsal or intercostal nerves have been described; how

BACKGROUND: In injuries of the lower brachial plexus, finger flexion can be restored by nerve or tendon transfer. However, there is no technique that can guarantee good recovery of finger and thumb extension.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the spinal nerve origins of the muscular branches of the radial nerve and identify potential intraplexus donor nerves for neurotization of the posterior interosseous nerve in patients with lower brachial plexus injuries.
METHODS: An intraoperative electrophysiological study was carried out during 16 contralateral C7 nerve transfers. The compound muscle action pot

One of the most common complications associated with a diaphyseal humeral fracture is the development of a radial nerve injury. We conducted a study to analyze the degree of recovery and prognostic factors associated with radial nerve palsy in patients with diaphyseal humerus fractures. We retrospectively analyzed 28 patients who presented to the Hospital La Fe, Valencia, Spain, with a diaphyseal humerus fracture associated with radial nerve injury between 2010 and 2020. A total of 14.3% (n = 4) of the patients in our cohort had open fractures and 85.7% (n = 24) had closed fractures. There wer

Knowledge of radial nerve motor branch anatomy is important when performing surgery in its vicinity, neurorrhaphy, and nerve blocks and for understanding the rate and order of recovery of muscle function after injury. Twenty normal fresh cadaver arms were dissected to quantitate radial nerve motor branch anatomy in the forearm. Though variable in individual specimens, innervation order from proximal to distal (based on mean shortest branch lengths) was brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus, supinator, extensor carpi radialis brevis, extensor digitorum communis, extensor carpi ulnaris

CASE: This case report describes a patient with paresthesia in the distribution of the superficial sensory branch of the radial nerve that was treated with surgery. Intraoperatively, there was a unique cause of internal compression by a rare superficial radial artery variant running adjacent to it. The nerve was mobilized from the artery with fascial releases. The patient had symptom resolution postoperatively.
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this cause of compression has not been described before and should be considered in a differential diagnosis. In addition, clinicians should be aware of t

INTRODUCTION: The traditional Kocher approach for lateral radial head exposure may be complicated by injury to the deep branch of the radial nerve (DBRN) and the radial collateral ligament. Kaplan approach is less commonly used, due to its known proximity to the DBRN. Extensor Digitorum Communis (EDC) splitting approach allows possible wide surgical exposure and low risk of radial collateral ligament injury. The comparison of the proximity of the DBRN to the surgical dissection at the level of radial head among approaches to the radial head has not previously been evaluated. We aimed to determ

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present paper was to determine the radial nerve morbidity associated with harvest of different venous conduits in the radial artery free flap.
METHODS: Retrospective study comparing subjective and objective symptoms of radial nerve morbidity in 51 consecutive free flaps over a 3-year period.
RESULTS: Damage to the radial nerve occurred in 9% (1/11) of patients in the cephalic vein group versus 18% (4/28) in the venae comitante group.
CONCLUSIONS: Raising the cephalic vein for venous drainage in the radial artery free flap doubles the incidence of radial nerve

BACKGROUND: Today, humerus nails have become the surgical method of choice in the treatment of humerus shaft fractures. Whether or not the radial nerve should be intraoperatively examined by default in case of primary paresis is currently under discussion.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical findings from 38 patients with humeral shaft fractures surgically treated with unreamed humerus nail (UHN) at the Department of Accident Surgery, University Clinics Bonn, Germany, between 2000 and 2003 were retrospectively assessed. Constant Score was applied for evaluation of functional results.
RESULTS: In

A case of posterior interosseous nerve paralysis is reported with discussion of some characteristics that appear to distinguish it from entrapment neuropathy and neuralgic amyotrophy. The surgical implications are also discussed. More than ten similar cases have been reported, but the pathogenesis of this condition is still controversial. The patient presented with posterior interosseous nerve paralysis related to focal radial nerve constriction secondary to vasculitis in the perineurium. The constriction site was resected and the radial nerve was sutured. The patient recovered completely afte
