[Early detoxification therapy in radiation exposures].

According to the structural metabolic theory of radiation injuries radiotoxins perform a leading role in the development of disorders. The experiments have disclosed the characteristic features of the development of toxemia in irradiated organism. These data have served as a ground for studying the efficiency of various methods of detoxication. Metabolic plasmapheresis is seemed to be of most pronounced effect in comparison with other methods of detoxication. On the basis of the results of these studies several practical recommendations were provided for performing an early disintoxicative the

Exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation in flight.

The ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure of airline pilots during flight was measured with ultraviolet-sensitive film badges. The badges were worn by flight crew on the epaulette nearest to the window of either a Boeing 737 or 767 during 18 different flights in 1989. The results showed in every case that the UVR exposure was negligible; a flight lasting several hours resulted in an exposure equivalent to no more than a minute or two outdoors. There is anecdotal evidence that pilots may be at increased risk of developing skin cancer compared with many other occupational groups. The suggestion t

Intrauterine radiation exposures and mental retardation.

Small head size and mental retardation have been known as effects of intrauterine exposure to ionizing radiation since the 1920s. In the 1950s, studies of Japanese atomic-bomb survivors revealed that at 4-17 wk of gestation, the greater the dose, the smaller the brain (and head size), and that beginning at 0.5 Gy (50 rad) in Hiroshima, mental retardation increased in frequency with increasing dose. No other excess of birth defects was observed. Otake and Schull (1984) pointed out that the period of susceptibility to mental retardation coincided with that for proliferation and migration of neur

Uncertainty and relative risks of radiation exposure.

Exposure to ionizing radiation in a nonmilitary emergency is likely to alarm those persons exposed and their families. Not only is the outcome uncertain, but the risks are difficult to convey. This communication discusses uncertainties in short-term outcome and long-term effects, as well as means of conveying the magnitude of risks to patients and their families. It emphasizes that the perception of radiation hazards is contextual. It offers three ways of presenting the prognostic long-term risks of accidental radiation exposure by comparing them with the incidence of cancer and genetic abnorm

Radiation Exposure, Training, and Safety in Cardiology.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is an inherent occupational health hazard in clinical cardiology. Health risks have been reported previously, including predilection to cancer. In addition, orthopedic injury due to prolonged wearing of heavy protective lead aprons, which are mandatory to reduce radiation risk, have been extensively documented. Cardiology as a specialty has grown with rising volumes of increasingly complex procedures. This includes electrophysiological, coronary, and structural intervention, advanced heart failure/transplant management, and diagnostic imaging. Both the operator a

FDXR is a biomarker of radiation exposure in vivo.

Previous investigations in gene expression changes in blood after radiation exposure have highlighted its potential to provide biomarkers of exposure. Here, FDXR transcriptional changes in blood were investigated in humans undergoing a range of external radiation exposure procedures covering several orders of magnitude (cardiac fluoroscopy, diagnostic computed tomography (CT)) and treatments (total body and local radiotherapy). Moreover, a method was developed to assess the dose to the blood using physical exposure parameters. FDXR expression was significantly up-regulated 24 hr after radiothe

Radiation exposure in perfusion CT of the brain.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to show the simulation of the radiation exposure of the brain during perfusion measurements multi-detector-CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The effective dose and different organ doses were measured with thermoluminescent dosimeters in an Alderson-Rando phantom and compared with the data of a simulation program (CT-Expo V1.6) for varying scan protocols with different tube voltages (in kilovolts) and constant parameters for tube current (270 mAs), scan length (28.8 mm), scan time (40 seconds), slice thickness (24 × 1.2 mm), and number of scans (40) for multi-detector-CT pe

[Effects of radiation exposure on human body].

There are two types of radiation health effect; acute disorder and late on-set disorder. Acute disorder is a deterministic effect that the symptoms appear by exposure above a threshold. Tissues and cells that compose the human body have different radiation sensitivity respectively, and the symptoms appear in order, from highly radiosensitive tissues. The clinical symptoms of acute disorder begin with a decrease in lymphocytes, and then the symptoms appear such as alopecia, skin erythema, hematopoietic damage, gastrointestinal damage, central nervous system damage with increasing radiation dose

Medical exposure to radiation and thyroid cancer.

In 2008, the worldwide estimated age-standardised incidence rates for thyroid cancer incidence were 4.7 and 1.5 per 100,000 women and men, respectively. Thyroid cancer's overall contribution to the worldwide cancer burden is relatively small, but incidence rates have increased over the last three decades throughout the world. This trend has been hypothesised to reflect a combination of technological advances enabling increased detection, but also changes in environmental factors, including population exposure to ionising radiation from fallout, diagnostic tests and treatment for benign and mal

Hematologic consequences of exposure to ionizing radiation.

From the early 1900s, it has been known that ionizing radiation (IR) impairs hematopoiesis through a variety of mechanisms. IR exposure directly damages hematopoietic stem cells and alters the capacity of bone marrow stromal elements to support and/or maintain hematopoiesis in vivo and in vitro. Exposure to IR induces dose-dependent declines in circulating hematopoietic cells not only through reduced bone marrow production, but also by redistribution and apoptosis of mature formed elements of the blood. Recently, the importance of using lymphocyte depletion kinetics to provide a "crude" dose e

[Osteogenesis in exposure to ionizing radiation in vitro].

Irradiation is a well established therapeutical concept to prevent heterotopic ossification after joint replacement. The influence of irradiation on proliferation of mature osteoblasts and their potential osteoprogenitors, matrix formation and mineralization are not well known in this setting. We therefore studied the effect of different doses of ionizing irradiation on the several steps of osteogenesis in vitro, using cells isolated from the juvenile rat. A colony forming test, the MTT-viability assay, a cell count, measurement of the cellular protein content and alkaline phosphatase activity

Risks of radiation exposure to orthopaedic surgeons.

The risks of occupational radiation exposure for orthopaedic surgeons has not been well documented. The use of fluoroscopy in orthopaedics has reduced morbidity and by reducing operative time and by reducing the invasiveness of procedures. Increasingly procedures requiring the use of fluoroscopy are being developed. In a prospective study we have monitored cumulative radiation exposure over a 6-month period. The exposure levels are well below the maximum dose limits for ionizing radiation as recommended by European Economic Communities EURATOM directives. Experimentally using a phantom patient

Effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation.

Prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation induces some effects that are seen at birth and others that cannot be detected until later in life. Data from A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki show a diminished number of births after exposure under 4 wk of gestational age. Although a wide array of congenital malformations has been found in animal experimentation after such exposure to x rays, in humans only small head size (exposure at 4-17 wk) and mental retardation (exposure primarily at 8-15 wk) have been observed. In Hiroshima, small head size occurred after doses of 0.10-0.19 Gy or more,

[Exposure to noise, vibration and radiation in Cracow].

The problems are discussed connected with exposure to noise, vibration and ionizing radiation. In Cracow traffic and industrial noise is particularly troublesome. The greatest intensity of traffic noise is in the old part of the city and noise level caused by city transport is from 65 to 85 dB/A. Among the industrial sources of noise the highest intensity is in the Lenin Steel Plant, Leg Electrothermal Plant, and Solway Soda Works. Vibration and ionizing radiation resulting from the industrial activities are a considerable risk for human health in the Cracow area. The building materials in con

Occupational exposure to radiation as a cancer hazard.

There is much experimental data which indicates that ionizing radiation is a very potent carcinogenic agent. Most types of carcinoma can be produced by radiation. Carcinoma is apparently induced through a single or a series of mutations in somatic cells. Radiologists have excess leukemia and other malignancy from external x-ray; uranium and other miners have excess lung cancer from internal alpha radiation; luminous dial painters have excess osteogenic sarcomas; and uranium mill workers appear to have excess lymphomas. A large number of persons are now exposed occupationally to radiation from
