Mosquito bite immunization with radiation-attenuated Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites: safety, tolerability, protective efficacy and humoral immunogenicity.

BACKGROUND: In this phase 1 clinical trial, healthy adult, malaria-naïve subjects were immunized with radiation-attenuated Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites (PfRAS) by mosquito bite and then underwent controlled human malaria infection (CHMI). The PfRAS model for immunization against malaria had previously induced >90 % sterile protection against homologous CHMI. This study was to further explore the safety, tolerability and protective efficacy of the PfRAS model and to provide biological specimens to characterize protective immune responses and identify protective antigens in support of malar

Effect of Low-Oxygen Conditions Created by Modified Atmosphere Packaging on Radiation Tolerance in Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) in Sweet Cherries.

Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) creates a low-oxygen (O2) environment that can increase the shelf life of fresh produce by decreasing respiration and the growth of pathogens. Low oxygen may also increase insect tolerance to irradiation (IR), and the use of MAP with products treated by IR to control quarantine pests before export may inadvertently compromise treatment efficacy. Spotted wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii Matsumura (Diptera: Drosophilidae) is a quarantine pest of stone and small fruits and a potential target for postharvest IR treatment. The effect of low oxygen generated by

Feasibility and patient reported tolerance of cryotherapy with Cooral mouth cooling device in patients undergoing radiation therapy (CooRay): a pilot study.

BackgroundRadiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is a major side-effect of (chemo)radiation (CRT) of patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). This study tries to establish a novel cryotherapy (CyT) method using a mouth care device (MCD; Cooral®, BrainCool AB, Lund, Sweden) to prevent RIOM.MethodsPatients were non-randomly assigned to use the MCD after every radiotherapy session for 30-60 minutes. Subjects were asked to answer daily questionnaires assessing tolerability of the intervention. Mucositis was assessed at baseline, once weekly and at weeks 1/3/6 after CRT. The primary endpoint was

A 5000 Fps, 4 Megapixel, Radiation-Tolerant, Wafer-Scale CMOS Image Sensor for the Direct Detection of Electrons and Photons.

We present the design and characterisation of a 4.2-megapixel, wafer-scale CMOS image sensor, achieving over 5000 frames per second at full resolution. The sensor has a pixel pitch of 58 µm square pixels, thus being as large as a full 200 mm wafer. The sensor is read out on two sides and features column-parallel programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) as well as analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs). The array has 2052 columns and 2064 rows; 12 rows are read in parallel, so that the total number of ADCs is 24,624. The data is transmitted through 216 sub-LVDS lanes running at 1 Gbps in double data

Tolerability and effects of two formulations of oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC; ACTIQ) in patients with radiation-induced oral mucositis.

BACKGROUND: Oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate (OTFC; ACTIQ) incorporates fentanyl into a lozenge allowing drug delivery through the oral mucosa resulting in rapid pain relief. OTFC is effective for breakthrough pain and could be particularly useful in patients with mucositis. METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, crossover study assessed two formulations of OTFC for tolerability in 14 patients with radiation-induced mucositis. On four separate days, patients with grade 3 or 4 mucositis received an OTFC unit 45 min before radiation treatment. Two units had a sweetened matrix formulation and

Evaluating physical and nutritional stress during mycelial growth as inducers of tolerance to heat and UV-B radiation in Metarhizium anisopliae conidia.

Elevated tolerance to UV-B radiation and heat may be induced in conidia produced on fungi exposed during mycelial growth to sublethal stresses other than heat or UV-B. This is due to a phenomenon referred to as 'cross-protection'. Several mechanisms are associated with this increased conidial tolerance, one of which is the accumulation of trehalose and mannitol within conidia. In the present study, conidia of the insect-pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. anisopliae were produced on mycelium subjected to nutritive, heat-shock, osmotic, or oxidative stress. The tolerance levels to UV-

The effects of cosmic particle radiation on pocket mice aboard Apollo XVII: II. Characteristics and tolerances of the pocket mouse and incidence of disease.

Pocket mice are facultative homoiotherms with the ability to drop their metabolic rate dramatically while at rest or in response to environmental stresses. Under these conditions, they characteristically enter a state of prolonged torpor. These animals require no drinking water and they can live in darkness for many months without apparent ill effect. They tolerate a wide range of ambient temperature, ralative humidity, and oxygen pressure and have survied without food for a mean of 14 d at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). Studies carried out on the pocket mouse colony us

Four germline POLH variants, including two found in skin tumors, impair DNA polymerase η function and cellular tolerance to UV radiation and cisplatin.

DNA polymerase (pol) η is vital for accurately replicating DNA opposite ultraviolet light (UV)-induced cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and cisplatin-induced intrastrand purine crosslinks. While human POLH deficiency is linked to the disease xeroderma pigmentosum variant, the functional consequences of germline and somatic POLH variants remain largely unexplored. We characterized nine nonsynonymous POLH germline variants, five of which have also been found in various tumors. Enzyme activity was first assessed using recombinant pol η (residues 1-432) proteins. Variants F17S, C227Y, and R356X displ

Toxicity of cobalt-complexed cyanide to Oncorhynchus mykiss, Daphnia magna, and Ceriodaphnia dubia. Potentiation by ultraviolet radiation and attenuation by dissolved organic carbon and adaptive UV tolerance.

BACKGROUND: Cobalt cyanide complexes often result when ore is treated with cyanide solutions to extract gold and other metals. These have recently been discovered in low but significant concentrations in effluents from gold leach operations. This study was conducted to determine the potential toxicity of cobalt-cyanide complexes to freshwater organisms and the extent to which ultraviolet radiation (UV) potentiates this toxicity. Tests were also conducted to determine if humic acids or if adaptation to UV influenced sensitivity to the cyanide complexes. METHODS: Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus myk
