The "plain film" bladder shadow in outflow obstruction: as accurate a discriminant of residual urine as ultrasound.

The height, width and area of the bladder shadow on post-micturition plain abdominal radiography was compared with the residual urine obtained at endoscopy from 58 men presenting with pure bladder outflow obstruction. Each parameter of the bladder shadow correlated significantly with the residual urine in patients in whom this shadow was visible. Post-micturition plain abdominal radiography is considerably cheaper than ultrasound and appears to be equally effective in the determination of residual urine. Its use as the sole imaging technique in the routine management of bladder outflow obstruc

Selective use of ultrasonography for the detection of pneumoperitoneum.

OBJECTIVE: Whether ultrasonography is superior to plain radiography for the detection of pneumoperitoneum is unknown. The goal of this study was to determine the value of ultrasonography for the detection of pneumoperitoneum. METHODS: One hundred thirty-two patients with suspected hollow-organ perforation were prospectively selected for study. All 132 patients received ultrasonography, upright chest radiography, and left lateral decubitus abdominal radiography examinations. The diagnostic accuracies of chest and abdominal radiographs for the detection of pneumoperitoneum were compared with co

Bedside ultrasonography for the confirmation of gastric tube placement in the neonate.

BACKGROUND: Naso/Orogastric tube (NOGT) misplacement can lead to significant complications. Therefore, the assessment of tube position is essential to ensure patient safety. Although radiography is considered the gold standard for determining NOGT location, new methods may be helpful in reducing repetitive radiation exposure, especially for neonates. In this study, we sought to investigate if bedside ultrasonography (BUSG) can be used to verify NOGT placement in neonatal intensive care patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Infants requiring NOGT placement were enrolled. After insertion of the NOGT

Fecal impaction detected by imaging predicts recurrent urinary tract infection.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the efficacy of ultrasonography (US) and abdominal radiography in assessing bladder and bowel dysfunction in children aged <24 months. We aimed to investigate the association between the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) recurrence and fecal impaction using imaging findings. METHODS: The medical records of 121 children (aged <24 months) with initial febrile UTI (fUTI) who were admitted to the authors' institution from January 2004 to September 2019 were reviewed retrospectively. We evaluated the rectal diameters of children with suspected fecal impac

Rigler Sign in a Child With Posttransplant Lymphoproliferative Disease: A Sign That Should Not Be Missed.

Rigler sign is a double wall sign suggesting pneumoperitoneum and intestinal perforation, and it needs emergency surgical treatment. Early diagnosis of intestinal perforation by clinical symptoms, presence of Rigler sign in abdominal radiography, and then early surgical treatment can reduce mortality. Here, we report a patient with Crigler-Najjar syndrome who underwent liver transplant and then developed posttransplant lymphoproliferative disease and received chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone plus rituximab. She was referred to the emergency departmen

The utility of staging in canine mast cell tumours.

Current staging of canine mast cell tumours (MCTs) practiced by many veterinarians involves a minimum of lymph node (LN) assessment, abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiography. Historically, some have advocated buffy coat and bone marrow evaluation. Two hundred and twenty dogs with MCT seen at a referral clinic were staged using LN palpation/cytology, thoracic radiography and abdominal ultrasound. The utility of each method was evaluated by considering prevalence of spread and future behaviour. At presentation, 30.9% of dogs had metastases to the local LN; 6.8% of all the dogs also had dist

False negative sonographic finding in emphysematous cholecystitis.

Two patients presented with fever and acute abdominal pain. Acute cholecystitis was diagnosed when ultrasound examination showed a double-contour gallbladder wall. Radiography showed gas in the gallbladder wall in both cases, indicating emphysematous cholecystitis. This demonstrated that gas in the gallbladder wall may go undetected by ultrasound at the time when it could still be detected by conventional radiography of the abdomen. Awareness of the value of conventional radiography in these cases has an important diagnostic significance which may affect patient management.

A review of the radiological diagnosis of small bowel obstruction using various imaging modalities.

Radiological investigation is an important tool in the diagnosis of small bowel obstruction (SBO). While plain abdominal radiograph remains the commonest investigation done in SBO, contrast gastrointestinal radiography, ultrasonography (US), computerised tomography (CT) scan -- with or without contrast enhancement are increasingly being advocated particularly in equivocal cases of SBO. We conducted manual, medicine and internet search for relevant literature on diagnosis of SBO using radiological investigations. Plain abdominal radiograph has a diagnostic accuracy for SBO that varies widely fr

Comparison of radiography and ultrasonography for diagnosing small-intestinal mechanical obstruction in vomiting dogs.

A cross-sectional study was performed on acutely vomiting dogs to compare the accuracy of radiography and ultrasonography for the diagnosis of small-intestinal mechanical obstruction and to describe several radiographic and ultrasonographic signs to identify their contribution to the final diagnosis. The sample population consisted of 82 adult dogs and small-intestinal obstruction by foreign body was confirmed in 27/82 (33%) dogs by surgery or necropsy. Radiography produced a definitive result (obstructed or not obstructed) in 58/82 (70%) of dogs; ultrasonography produced a definitive result i

Accuracy of Plain Digital Radiography for the Detection of Gastrointestinal Masses in Dogs and Cats.

Abdominal radiography is commonly used as an initial diagnostic tool in dogs and cats with gastrointestinal (GI) signs. Historically, abdominal radiographs were considered unreliable for detecting GI masses, with detection rates below 50%. The purpose of this retrospective, case-control study was to determine the accuracy of abdominal radiographs in identifying the presence and location of GI masses and to assess the influence of the reviewer experience. Radiographs from 114 dogs and 111 cats were reviewed by two board-certified radiologists, one first year radiology resident, and one rotating

[Abdominal pain and inconclusive ultrasound: a CT scan may not always be the best next step].

A 4-year-old male presented to the emergency department with fever, mucous diarrhea, abdominal pain, and vomiting for 36 hours. On abdominal palpation, he had generalized pain without rebound and increased hydroaereal sounds. The blood count showed leukocytosis and elevated C-reactive protein, and an ultrasound revealed intestinal loops with abundant content, increased peristalsis, and a normal appendix. Due to the suspicion of invasive gastroenteritis, he was admitted for observation. Due to the persistence of symptoms, a new ultrasound was performed which showed pelvic free fluid but did not

[Digestive perforations and occlusions].

Acute abdominal disorders are common reasons for consultation at the emergency department. The diagnosis of all acute abdominal disorders begins with a careful history and physical examination. When appropriate, the clinical examination should be supplemented by conventional plain abdominal radiography. Gastrointestinal perforation and obstruction are very commonly encountered in the diagnosis of acute abdomen. Plain abdominal radiographs are the initial diagnostic methods of choice. In some circumstances, ultrasonography and CT may be valuable for the evaluation of the cause of abdominal diso
