The application of artificial neural networks in the detection of mandibular fractures using panoramic radiography.

BACKGROUND: Panoramic radiography is a standard diagnostic imaging method for dentists. However, it is challenging to detect mandibular trauma and fractures in panoramic radiographs due to the superimposed facial skeleton structures. The objective of this study was to develop a deep learning algorithm that is capable of detecting mandibular fractures and trauma automatically and compare its performance with general dentists. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective diagnostic test accuracy study. This study used a two-stage deep learning framework. To train the model, 190 panoramic imag

Determination of mandibular morphology in a TURKISH population with Down syndrome using panoramic radiography.

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome (DS) is by far the most common known chromosomal disorder. Some characteristic features of DS are generalised growth deficiency, craniofacial abnormalities such as mandibular prognathism and underdevelopment of the midfacial region, dental abnormalities such as taurodontism and hypodontia. Individuals with DS have an increased prevalence of periodontal disease compared with age-matched control patients. The aim of the present study is to determine the morphologic features of the mandible among individuals with DS. METHODS: Thirty-four DS patients and thirty four age-

Calcification of the branches of the external carotid artery detected by panoramic radiography: a case report.

Atherosclerosis, a progressive inflammatory disease, may lead to stroke, coronary artery disease, or peripheral artery disease. The prevalence of atherosclerosis associated with morbidity and mortality is very high in industrialized countries. This report describes the case of a 49-year-old male patient whose panoramic radiograph taken as part of a dental examination showed calcification in the branches of the external carotid artery. The right facial artery and left maxillary, facial, and lingual arteries were also calcified. The patient had a history of thrombosis in the right axillary and b

Agreement between panoramic and intra-oral radiography in the assessment of marginal bone height.

Panoramic and intra-oral radiographs from 400 consecutive patients were evaluated for the assessment of the marginal bone height. Two hundred panoramic radiographs were exposed with the rotational technique and 200 with the intra-oral X-ray tube technique. Measurements of the approximal marginal bone level were independently performed by two observers. Complete agreement between panoramic and intra-oral radiographs was, on average, obtained in 55% and 49% of the sites, respectively. When the criterion for agreement was widened to include recordings with a difference of +/- 1 mm, the agreement

Comparison of detection performance of soft tissue calcifications using artificial intelligence in panoramic radiography.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is limited to teeth and periodontal disease in the dental field, and is used for diagnosis assistance or data analysis, and there has been no research conducted in actual clinical situations. So, we created an environment similar to actual clinical practice and conducted research by selecting three of the soft tissue diseases (carotid artery calcification, lymph node calcification, and sialolith) that are difficult for general dentists to see. Therefore, in this study, the accuracy and reading time are evaluated using panoramic images and AI. A total of 20,000 pano

Comparison of digital panoramic radiography versus cone beam computerized tomography for measuring alveolar bone.

BACKGROUND: Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in dental implanting. However, the local hospitals usually don't have access to CBCT due to the cost and medical investment, especially in West of China. The doctors in local hospitals have to make reasonable dental planting using orthopantomography (OPG) to reduce risks. Therefore, it is clinically meaningful to determine the magnification rate of OPG to obtain correct diagnosis. This study investigated the magnification rate of OPG in measuring different maxillofacial loci compared with CBCT. METHODS: Eighty-six patie

Use of panoramic radiography to predict possible maxillary sinus membrane perforation during dental extraction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the use of panoramic radiographs is a reliable method of predicting maxillary sinus membrane exposure or perforation during extraction of maxillary teeth. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The radiographs of 72 patients were evaluated before extraction of maxillary teeth, and a prediction was made whether exposure or perforation of the sinus membrane was likely. This decision was based on the proximity of the root tip to the radiographic floor of the maxillary sinus. The extraction site was then evaluated to determine if the sinus membrane was visible or if a perforation had oc

Application of the Kvaal method for age estimation using digital panoramic radiography of Chinese individuals.

The Kvaal method as a non-invasive method for age estimation based on the changes of pulpal size caused by secondary dentin deposition has been applied to different ethnics. However, its results are often conflicting and its accuracy is relatively poor. This study aimed to verify the applicability of the Kvaal method to estimate the ages of the Chinese population using digital panoramic radiographs and to formulate specific regression equations for use in Chinese subjects. A sample of 360 digital panoramic radiographs from northern Chinese population were selected, from which the pulpal size a

Panoramic radiography: effects of head alignment on the vertical dimension of the mandibular ramus and condyle region.

The aim of this study was to assess whether it is possible to derive accurate vertical measurements of the mandibular ramus and condyle from panoramic radiographs. A human dry skull was positioned in a panoramic machine. The skull was displaced along the sagittal and transverse plane and rotated around the vertical and transverse axes. A set of 252 digital radiographs with defined positioning errors was compared with a set of 42 radiographs in the 'ideal' position. The distances between the metal markers that had been attached at the angle of the mandible at a distance of 60 mm in the condyle

Development and validation of a polyfit approach for assessing alveolar bone loss using panoramic radiography.

BACKGROUND: Panoramic radiographs (PAN) are one of the most common diagnostic tools in clinical practice. Periodontal disease, the second most prevalent oral disease, significantly impacts patients' quality of life. However, there is currently no standardized and quantitative image analysis method for periodontal diagnosis. This study aims to estimate alveolar bone loss in six sextants of the mouth using the Polyfit approach on panoramic radiography. This approach utilizes ratio and proportional measurements based on fixed anatomical points to improve the accuracy of assessing bone loss. METH
