Prevalence and Clinical Import of Thoracic Injury Identified by Chest Computed Tomography but Not Chest Radiography in Blunt Trauma: Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Chest computed tomography (CT) diagnoses more injuries than chest radiography, so-called occult injuries. Wide availability of chest CT has driven substantial increase in emergency department use, although the incidence and clinical significance of chest CT findings have not been fully described. We determine the frequency, severity, and clinical import of occult injury, as determined by changes in management. These data will better inform clinical decisions, need for chest CT, and odds of intervention. METHODS: Our sample included prospective data (2009 to 2013) on 5,912 pat

Which is a real valuable screening tool for lung cancer and measure thoracic diseases, chest radiography or low-dose computed tomography?: A review on the current status of Japan and other countries.

Chest radiography (CR) has been used as a screening tool for lung cancer and the use of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is not recommended in Japan. We need to reconsider whether CR really contributes to the early detection of lung cancer. In addition, we have not well discussed about other major thoracic disease detection by CR and LDCT compared with lung cancer despite of its high frequency. We review the usefulness of CR and LDCT as veridical screening tools for lung cancer and other thoracic diseases. In the case of lung cancer, many studies showed that LDCT has capability of early det

The Agreement between Radiography and Fluoroscopy as Diagnostic Tools for Tracheal Collapse in Dogs.

Tracheal collapse is a common disease in small, middle-aged dogs, and imaging tools are essential for its diagnosis. Radiography and fluoroscopy are the main diagnostic modalities used, but their agreement in different regions is not well documented. In this study, the agreement between thoracic radiography and fluoroscopy in tracheal collapse was investigated in 29 dogs. The results showed that radiography detected a lower degree of collapsing trachea compared to fluoroscopy at the carina region (p < 0.001). However, there was no significant difference observed between the degree of collapsin

Thoracoscopic removal with fluoroscopic radiographic guidance of thoracoamniotic shunting catheters in newborns.

Fetal thoracoamniotic shunting (TAS), which drains pleural effusion, is a treatment for severe primary fetal pleural effusion. While TAS is an effective treatment, its complications include bleeding and the catheter becoming dislodged, and also penetrating the thoracic cavity or chest wall. Catheters dislodged into the thoracic cavity in TAS can be removed by thoracoscopy. However, if there are adhesions in the thoracic cavity, finding the TAS catheter with a thoracoscope can be difficult. We used fluoroscopic radiography in addition to a thoracoscope to remove a TAS catheter in four patients.

Diagnostic Utility of Extended Focused Assessment With Sonography in Trauma (eFAST) in Hemodynamically Stable Patients With Blunt Thoracoabdominal Injury: A Prospective Study.

Background Extended focused assessment with sonography in trauma (eFAST) has become an important component of trauma evaluation for rapid bedside detection of thoracic and intra-abdominal injuries. Although its role in hemodynamically unstable trauma is well established, prospective evidence evaluating its diagnostic value in hemodynamically stable patients with blunt thoracoabdominal trauma remains limited. This study aimed to assess the diagnostic utility of eFAST in stable blunt trauma patients by examining its concordance with final hospital discharge diagnosis and comparing its detection

Chest radiography and computed tomography in the evaluation of mediastinal adenopathy in lymphoma.

Thoracic computed tomography (CT) in 232 patients with either primary staging of new or suggested relapsing lymphoma was compared with conventional chest radiography and both were correlated with clinical staging. Particular attention was given to the possibility of reducing routine thoracic CT, which is the current method used in this hospital in all patients with suggested lymphoma. Mediastinal lymphoma was detected by CT in 95 per cent of patients with clinically active mediastinal lymphoma, and by conventional chest radiography in 56 per cent. CT was found to be less reliable in evaluation

Evaluation of the Nexus X-ray rules in blunt thorax trauma.

BACKGROUND: There is still no agreed radiographic rule for the evaluation of blunt thoracic trauma. Emergency physicians want radiography according to their experience and examination findings. Various studies have been carried out on this subject and some of these studies have reached findings that can support the initial steps of the rules of radiography. One of them is the rule of Nexus thorax radiography rules. In this study, we aim to determine the accuracy of nexus thorax radiography rules. METHODS: Our study was a prospective cohort study performed in the emergency department of our Un

The utility of staging in canine mast cell tumours.

Current staging of canine mast cell tumours (MCTs) practiced by many veterinarians involves a minimum of lymph node (LN) assessment, abdominal ultrasound and thoracic radiography. Historically, some have advocated buffy coat and bone marrow evaluation. Two hundred and twenty dogs with MCT seen at a referral clinic were staged using LN palpation/cytology, thoracic radiography and abdominal ultrasound. The utility of each method was evaluated by considering prevalence of spread and future behaviour. At presentation, 30.9% of dogs had metastases to the local LN; 6.8% of all the dogs also had dist

Adjunct diagnostic value of radiological findings in mucopolysaccharidosis type IVa-related thoracic spinal abnormalities: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), systematic assessment and management of cervical instability, cervicomedullary and thoracolumbar junction spinal stenosis and spinal cord compression averts or arrests irreversible neurological damage, improving outcomes. However, few studies have assessed thoracic spinal involvement in MPS IVa patients. We aimed to evaluate thoracic spinal abnormalities in MPS IVa patients and identify associated image manifestations by CT and MRI study. RESULTS: Data of patients diagnosed and/or treated for MPS IVa at MacKay Memorial Hospital from Ja

[What are the tools for post-occupational follow-up, how should they be performed and what are their performance, limits and benefit/risk ratio? Chest X-Ray and CT scan].

Chest radiography and computed tomography (CT) are the two radiological techniques used for the follow-up of people exposed to asbestos. Since the last conference of consensus (1999), the scientific literature has primarily covered high-resolution CT and high-resolution volume CT (HR-VCT). We consider in turn the contribution of digital thoracic radiography, recommendations for the performance of HR-VCT to ensure the quality of examination while controlling the delivered radiation dose, and the need to refer to the "CT atlas of benign diseases related to asbestos exposure", published by a grou

Comparison of 3D Ultrasonography, Surface Topography, and Radiography in Assessing Sagittal Spinal Parameters in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) requires repeated radiographic monitoring, accumulating ionizing radiation during a radiosensitive developmental period. This prospective pilot study compared sagittal thoracic kyphosis and lumbar lordosis measurements obtained via three-dimensional ultrasonography (Scolioscan), electromechanical surface topography (Spinal Mouse), and standing lateral radiography in 19 AIS patients (mean age 15.95 ± 3.67 years; Cobb angle >10°). Paired-samples t-tests, Pearson correlations, and Bland-Altman analyses were performed (matched n = 15 thoracic, n = 16 lumbar).
