The epidemiology of plunging ranula in South Auckland.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Estimate the incidence rate and provide basic descriptive epidemiologic characteristics of plunging ranulas in a multi-ethnic population. STUDY DESIGN: Case series with chart review. METHODS: The study group comprised all Counties Manukau Health (CMH, Manukau City, Auckland, New Zealand) patients presenting to the CMH Department of Otolaryngology with a diagnosis of plunging ranula from January 2001 to December 2013, as recorded in the departmental case register. Non-CMH domicile patients were excluded. South Auckland comprised the base population, as serviced by CMH.

A Rare Case of Congenital Ranula in an Infant.

Ranula is a mucus extravasation cyst originating from the sublingual gland on the floor of the mouth. Congenital ranula is very rare. We report a case of a 4-month-old girl with a congenital ranula in the floor of mouth. The ranula was treated first by marsupialization, but the cyst recurred after 1 week. Excision of the ranula was done and was successful.

What is new in management of pediatric ranula?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ranula is extravasation mucocele arising from the sublingual gland, influencing the swallowing or eating; this review focuses on the most recent literature pertaining to pediatric ranulas and aims to comprehensively describe the methods of diagnosis and management approaches. RECENT FINDINGS: Ranulas consist of intraoral ranula and plunging ranula, which are frequently misdiagnosed, so it is vital for the differential diagnosis of pediatric ranulas to depend on the clinical examination, imaging and fine-needle aspiration cytology. Pediatric patients should first be observed

Fibrin glue in the surgical treatment of ranulas.

The essential treatment of a ranula is meticulous dissection of the thin wall of the cyst in continuity with the sublingual gland of origin. We have used a technique of fibrin glue injection into the cystic space of the ranula after it had been evacuated by aspiration. The fibrin glue within the cystic cavity prevents collapse of the wall of the cyst during surgery and facilitates and simplifies the surgical procedure by clearly outlining the involved area and by sharply delineating its thin wall.

Ranula and sarcoid granuloma of a sublingual gland.

A case is reported in which the treatment of the ranula consisted of dissection of the cystic wall along with excision of the sublingual gland of origin. The histological picture of the gland was consistent with sarcoidosis. Thereafter, all other examinations were negative for sarcoidosis. However, there remains the possibility that the lesion may be the precursor of widespread sarcoidosis which might occur in the future.

Ranula Formation After Lingual Frenectomy in a Newborn.

Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly characterized by a shortened lingual frenulum, which can range from cases with no clinical relevance to severe cases, where frenectomy may be indicated. In newborns, this indication has increased exponentially. The purpose of this report is to discuss obstruction of the sublingual caruncle, with a recurrent ranula, as a post-surgical complication of laser lingual frenectomy performed in a newborn. The treatment provided is also discussed (marsupialization and removal of the affected sublingual glands). Lingual frenectomy should be performed with great c

Treatment of oral ranula in HIV-positive patient.

HIV-associated salivary gland disease refers to the pathology in head and neck lesions such as ranula, salivary gland swelling, xerostomia, and benign lymphoepithelial cysts in the parotid gland. Here, we present a unique case of the ranula patient with HIV infection treated with OK-423 sclerotherapy. Case report: The patient was a 42-year-old Japanese male with a few months history of oral floor swelling. Computed tomography (CT) showed a low-density area limited within the right floor of the mouth. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a distinct T2-high intensity area localized on the s

Modern management and pathophysiology of ranula: literature review.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of consensus about the appropriate treatment of ranula. The objective of the present investigation was to produce a scientific basis for treatment. METHODS: A review of the relevant literature is interpreted in the light of improved knowledge about the local anatomy and the pathophysiology of the salivary glands. RESULTS: The oral and plunging ranulas are cystic extravasation mucoceles that arise from the sublingual gland and usually from a torn duct of Rivinus. The sublingual gland is a spontaneous secretor and the salivary flow is resistant to obstruction, which

Clinical Diagnosis and Management of Bilateral Plunging Ranula.

Ranula is a benign salivary gland lesion originating from the sublingual salivary gland. This condition is primarily associated with salivary extravasation and retention due to obstruction or injury of the submandibular duct. A plunging ranula represents a rare variant occurring in the neck, submandibular, or submental regions, with bilateral presentations being particularly uncommon. Clinically, due to its lack of specificity, it is easily confused with other cervical lesions. This paper reports a case of a 25-year-old female presenting with bilateral painless submandibular masses. MRI reveal

Submandibular gland mucocele associated with a mixed ranula.

Mucoceles of the submandibular gland are extremely rare pathologic occurrences that present an investigative and management dilemma owing to their clinical indistinguishability from plunging ranulas. Of the few that have been documented, these mucous extravasation cysts involved the submandibular gland alone. We describe perhaps the first case of an extensive submandibular gland mucocele occurring in conjunction with a mixed ranula from the ipsilateral sublingual gland, and discuss the various considerations in the management of such lesions.

Transoral approach for plunging ranula--10-year experience.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: Plunging ranulas (PRs) are infrequently encountered. The origin of PRs is mostly from the sublingual gland (SLG). Different routes to manage PRs include marsupialization, simple SLG excision, and combined SLG and submandibular gland (SMG) excision either transcervically or transorally. In this study, we demonstrated our experience managing PRs via transoral excision of the SLG with marsupialization. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 20 patients at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Linkou, between January 1999 and April 2009. All patient

Sublingual ranula: report of a submandibular clinical case.

Ranula is a raised mucocele on the oral floor. When the mucocele extends and passes the sublingual space and invades the submandibular space it may be called ''plunging ranula''. Its etiology is not completely known. Our clinical case is a clear example: a 10-year old formation, not painful, developed during several years and originally of small dimension located in the sublingual region. The purpose of this study is to underline that the surgical treatment of choice, in these clinical situations, is the drainage of the cavity and marsupialization rather than a radical removal.

CT scanning of the plunging ranula. Case report.

A diagnosis of the deep plunging ranula usually is based upon the history and clinical examination of the patient. The case presented here highlights the role of the CT scan in facilitating a definitive diagnosis. Visualization of the anatomic relations of the accumulated secretion, as it dissects its way through the cervical tissue planes, also is made possible.

Sarcoid ranula. Its association with wide-spread sarcoidosis.

The presence of noncaseating granulomas in salivary tissue is a specific feature of sarcoidosis. We document the case of a healthy woman who presented with a sarcoid ranula of the sublingual salivary gland without any other manifestations of the disease. This sarcoid ranula subsequently progressed to symptomatic widespread sarcoidosis in a span of 7 months. An asymptomatic sarcoid ranula may thus possibly represent a precursor to widespread sarcoidosis.

Not every sublingual swelling is Ranula, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sublingual epidermoid cysts, rare benign lesions of ectodermal origin, are typically located beneath the tongue or in the floor of the mouth. Although typically asymptomatic, these cysts can grow and lead to discomfort, dysphagia, or complications such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Since sublingual swellings might resemble other disorders, like Plunging ranulas, an accurate diagnosis and prompt treatment are crucial. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 22-year-old man with a persistent sublingual enlargement. It was associated with dysphagia, speech and chewing difficulties, and

Unusual Presentation of a Congenital Ranula Cyst in a Newborn.

Congenital ranula cysts are rare, benign cysts that arise from the obstruction or rupture of the sublingual gland ducts in the oral cavity of newborns. Here, we present a case of a congenital ranula cyst in a newborn, highlighting the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of this rare condition. The neonate presented with a smooth, painless, and non-tender mass in the floor of the mouth, which was identified as a sublingual cyst via ultrasonography. The neonate underwent successful surgical excision of the cyst, with no complications or recurrence observed during the follow-up perio
