BACKGROUND: Alcohol has potential deleterious effects on donor heart function. This study was conducted in rats to determine whether long-term alcohol ingestion produces impaired hemodynamic performance while maintaining a normal left ventricular ejection fraction in donor hearts before transplantation and whether donor cardiac function is affected after heart transplantation.

Severe graft-versus-host disease was induced by transplantation of ACI rat bone marrow and spleen cells into irradiated Lewis rat recipients. Treatment with FK 506 or cyclosporine A (CsA) was started after clinical and histologic evidence of acute GVHD was present. Immunocompetent cell functions were evaluated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In animal models, estrogens are complete carcinogens in certain target sites. 4-Hydroxyestradiol (4-OH-E2), an endogenous metabolite of 17β-estradiol (E2), is known to have prominent estrogenic activity plus potential genotoxicity and mutagenicity.
