In Huntington disease (HD) the prodromal phase has been increasingly investigated and is currently in focus for early interventional treatments. Also, the influence of sex on disease progression and severity in patients is under discussion, as a sex-specific impact has been reported in transgenic rodent models for HD. Bacillus anthracis lethal toxin (LT) produces symptoms of anthrax in mice and induces rapid lysis of macrophages derived from certain inbred strains. LT is comprised of a receptor binding component, protective antigen (PA), which delivers the enzymatic component, lethal factor (LF), into cells. The primary research question of this study queries whether, beyond environmental conditions, genetic factors affect the development of joint contractures. We hypothesized that intrinsic genetic factors influence the severity of joint contractures developing secondary to joint immobilization. Forty rats from four inbred rat strains had one leg immobilized in knee flexion for 4 weeks. The contracture was measured mechanically as the lack of range of motion to a standardized torque. Spontaneous leukemia occurred in 36% of a group of 39 aged Slc: Wistar rats, which ranged in age at death from 99 to 123 (average age: 114) weeks old. We report the growth characteristics of autochthonous experimental colonic tumors as assessed by serial measurements at colonoscopy. Male Fischer 344 rats were given 10 weekly subcutaneous injections of the bowel carcinogen azoxymethane, 10 mg/kg (weeks 1-10). A chordoma arose in the lumbar region of the vertebral column from the last two vertebrae of a 112 week old female control F344 rat. Macroscopically it was a mass measuring 32 by 22 mm reaching the pelvic region and pressing against the colon and urinary bladder. Histologically the tumor cells were arranged into lobules and the cells grew in cords. Vacuolated large cells infiltrated the bone and surrounding muscles. This is the first reported case of chordoma in a rodent.

The effects of the 5-HT2A/2C receptor antagonist, ketanserin, on lordosis behavior were examined in hormonally primed, ovariectomized Fischer and Sprague-Dawley females. The prostates of 1775 (614 control and 1161 experimental) 2-year-old F344 rats from 12 different carcinogen bioassays conducted by the Bioassay Program of the NCI and the NTP were evaluated histologically.
