The current intervention study aimed at breaking the potential intergenerational cycle of insecure attachment. The authors randomly assigned 81 first-time mothers to one of two intervention groups or a control group. The interventions involved four home visits when the infants were between 7 and 10 months old. The first intervention, VIPP, consisted of video-feedback and brochures to enhance sensitive parenting. The second intervention, VIPP-R, involved additional discussions of mothers' childhood attachment experiences in relation to their current caregiving. After the intervention, intervent

AIM: Functional dyspepsia, originates from gastroduodenal region, is described as resistant and recurring dyspeptic symptoms with unknown etiology. Although there is some evidence in support of a relationship between functional dyspepsia and psychopathology, attachment patterns of functional dyspepsia patients have not been studied yet. In our study, we aimed to compare attachment patterns of functional dyspepsia patients with organic dyspepsia patients and healthy volunteers.
METHOD: 43 patients diagnosed with functional dyspepsia, 38 patients with organic dyspepsia and 42 healthy volunteers

OBJECTIVE: Attachment insecurity may confer risk for developing an eating disorder. We describe domains of attachment functioning that are relevant to eating disorders including: affect regulation, interpersonal style, coherence of mind, and reflective functioning. Research since 2000 on attachment and eating disorders related to these domains is reviewed.
METHOD: We searched MedLine/Pubmed and PsycINFO from January 2000 to February 2014 and kept articles that: were empirical, included adults with a diagnosed eating disorder, and used a standard attachment measure. We retained 50 relevant stu

Since the beginning of clinical attachment research in the mid-1980s the number of research projects in this area has been continuously increasing. The research questions so far can be allocated to numerous medical disciplines such as psychosomatic medicine, adult psychiatry or child and adolescent psychiatry. Recently, children with ADHD and their families have also become subjects of this branch of research. Their specific behavioral characteristics from early childhood on constitute unique challenges on the parent-child interaction. If these interactions develop in a suboptimal way, childre

Major depressive disorder (MDD) frequently co-occurs with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and their comorbidity (MDD-SAD) increases clinical severity and functional impairment. Still, the specific psychological vulnerabilities of individuals with MDD-SAD are poorly understood. Individual attachment characteristics develop early in life through interactions with primary caregivers, and tend to persist throughout life. Early trauma can worsen attachment insecurity, increasing the risk for future anxiety and depression. The purpose of this study is to examine differences in individual attachment a

Disordered parental attachment can commit children to lives characterised by relationship difficulties, behaviour problems, educational failure, and poor self-esteem. It is a major root of trans-generational neglect and abuse and frequently underlies mental health problems, drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness, and crime. Early childhood setting of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis function appears to contribute to these costly difficulties. More broadly, the concept of attachment can contribute to defining and managing the psychosocial dimension of routine paediatric care. The current u

Research shows that individuals who experience distress when discarding their possessions are more indecisive than individuals who do not experience such difficulty. These individuals report more intense emotional responses and greater intolerance to distress when faced with a discarding task. The aim of this study was to determine whether an insecure attachment style contributes to indecisiveness among individuals with discarding difficulties and whether this association is mediated by emotional reactivity and distress intolerance. This study used a within-group cross-sectional design. One hu

Approximately 4.2% of pregnant women consume illicit drugs during pregnancy (AIHW, 2011). Drug exposed infants are more likely to be born small for gestational age, be pre-term, and be admitted to special care or intensive care nurseries (AIHW, 2007).

AIM: The present study investigates the role of attachment representation and mentalization as possibly protective factors in the relationship between early maltreatment and potential for violence in adolescence.
METHODS: For the current study, 161 adolescents, aged 14-21 years, were recruited from high schools and youth psychiatry. Early maltreatment was assessed by the Childhood Experiences of Care and Abuse Questionnaire, attachment was assessed using the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System, and mentalization was coded with the Reflective Functioning Scale from Adult Attachment Inte

BACKGROUND: This article reports on the analysis of a Child Attachment Interview using the Dynamic Maturational Model (DMM) of attachment coding system developed by Crittenden for use with the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI). The aim of the study was to see if the two coders could classify the child interviews using the DMM-AAI approach and produce the range of DMM attachment strategies to be expected from previous research and the literature.
METHODS: Two coders independently classified interviews with 41 children aged between 6 and 13 years with an average age of 9.8 years. In total, 24 of

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have examined the impact of preterm birth on the quality of the attachment relationship to the mother in infancy, but few have examined extremely preterm born infants and almost no data have been reported on prematurity and its impact on the attachment organization attained after childhood.
METHODS: Thirty-nine adolescents born extremely preterm and 39 full-term born control participants were assessed with the Adult Attachment Interview.
RESULTS: The prematurely born showed lower scores regarding measures of attachment security and, in particular, a higher proportio

Disorganized/Disoriented (D) attachment has seen widespread interest from policy makers, practitioners, and clinicians in recent years. However, some of this interest seems to have been based on some false assumptions that (1) attachment measures can be used as definitive assessments of the individual in forensic/child protection settings and that disorganized attachment (2) reliably indicates child maltreatment, (3) is a strong predictor of pathology, and (4) represents a fixed or static "trait" of the child, impervious to development or help. This paper summarizes the evidence showing that t

OBJECTIVE: To assess convergence among three different measures of indiscriminate behavior and to assess the relationship of indiscriminate behavior to having an attachment figure and to aggressive behavior among young children living in a Romanian institution.
METHOD: Caregivers in the institution were interviewed with semistructured interviews regarding the behavior of 61 children with special emphasis on indiscriminate behavior. The study was conducted in Bucharest, Romania (1999).
RESULTS: Substantial convergence among measures of indiscriminate behavior was demonstrated. Indiscriminate

BACKGROUND: The past 10 years have seen a fruitful line of enquiry building on identification of previously unclassifiable patterns of infant-mother interaction. A critical review of these new findings in attachment theory, highlighting their potential relevance to child psychopathology, is presented.
METHOD: Selective literature review relating to disorganised attachment in childhood.
RESULTS: Disorganised patterns of attachment have only relatively recently been described. They show characteristic patterns of evolution in development. There is evidence that disorganised attachments are ass

Stress-related disorders are common in modern societies. What adds to the burden is empathic stress, arising when observing another's stress elicits a stress response in the observer. In romantic couples, we investigated the association between empathic stress and adult attachment-a deep emotional bond between partners-to understand its inherent facets of risk and resilience. Psychosocial stress was induced in one partner ("target") while the other passively observed the situation ("observer"). Stress reactivity was measured in both partners via salivary cortisol, heart rate, high-frequency he

The present study investigated multivariate associations between attachment styles and personality disorders (PDs)-and the mediating role of trust-in a sample of child molesters ( n = 84) and a matched control group from the general community ( n = 80). Among child molesters, canonical correlation analysis revealed that two variates resembling avoidant and anxious attachment dimensions were associated with PD traits. Attachment avoidance was related to schizoid, schizotypal, and avoidant PDs, with a marginal contribution of antisocial PD. Attachment anxiety was related to borderline and histri

BACKGROUND: Vulnerability to interpersonal stress is an important risk factor for Eating Disorders (EDs). Adult insecure attachment involves different emotional, biological and behavioural strategies to cope with social stressors. However, although attachment has proved to play a pivotal role in EDs, no study has yet explored the effects of attachment on the emotional and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses to a psychosocial stressor in EDs.
METHODS: Fifty-two ED women (29 with anorexia nervosa, 23 with bulimia nervosa) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Their emot

A dysfunctional relationship between parents and children can influence cognitive and emotional development and contribute to the development of psychiatric disorders, particularly panic disorder (PD). With the aim of exploring childhood experiences of parenting in PD patients, we compared subjectively perceived climate and objective recall by administering the Parental Bonding Instrument and 10 adjunctive items to 22 out-patients and 22 matched controls. Our analysis showed that DSM-III-R-diagnosed PD patients reported their parents to be significantly less caring than did the control group,
