Cognitive behavioral therapy for public-speaking anxiety using virtual reality for exposure.

This study used an open clinical trial to test a cognitive-behavioral treatment for public-speaking anxiety that utilized virtual reality as a tool for exposure therapy. Treatment was completed by participants (n = 10) meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV criteria for social phobia, or panic disorder with agoraphobia in which public speaking was the predominantly feared stimulus. Treatment was conducted by a licensed psychologist in an outpatient clinic. Treatment consisted of eight individual therapy sessions, including four sessions of anxiety management

Artificial intelligence (AI) for virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET): A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review maps what is known about using artificial intelligence (AI) to tailor virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to better meet the needs of patients and therapists. BACKGROUND: Exposure therapy is a well-supported treatment for fear- and anxiety-related disorders that works by exposing patients to feared or avoided stimuli. VRET can facilitate exposure that would otherwise be impractical. AI offers growing possibilities to personalize VRET, potentially improving its effectiveness. INCLUSION CRITERIA: We included peer-reviewed journal articles published up to N

Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy for Reducing School Anxiety in Adolescents: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is a promising treatment approach for anxiety disorders. However, while its efficacy has been demonstrated in adults, research on the efficacy of VRET in the treatment of adolescents with anxiety disorders is largely lacking. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study was carried out to test whether exposure to a virtual reality (VR) school environment elicits state anxiety and autonomic arousal in adolescents with school anxiety (diagnoses covering social anxiety disorder or specific phobia involving school contexts). In addition, we examined whether repeate

Virtual reality applications for diagnosis, risk assessment and therapy of child abusers.

Despite the successful application of virtual reality (VR) in a wide variety of mental disorders and the obvious potentials that VR provides, the use of VR in the context of criminology and forensic psychology is sparse. For forensic mental health professionals, VR provides some advantages that outrun general advantages of VR, e.g., ecological validity and controllability of social situations. Most important seems to be the unique possibility to expose offenders and to train coping skills in virtual situations, which are able to elicit disorder-relevant behavior-without endangering others. VR

[Antiretroviral therapy in inmates: between guidelines and reality of Italian correctional facilities].

In HIV-positive patients detention often represents a unique opportunity for health care. HIV-positive inmates enjoy the same rights as non-restricted people, as established under national and international legislation, declarations and guidelines. Antiretroviral therapy in restricted men shows some peculiarities such as the voluntary non-taking of drugs to worsen the health status or obtain legal benefits and the high frequency of concomitant psychiatric treatment. On the other hand, patient compliance may be considerably improved by adopting DOT strategy. Aiming to define the choices of firs

Comparison of virtual reality based therapy with customized vestibular physical therapy for the treatment of vestibular disorders.

We examined outcomes in persons with vestibular disorders after receiving virtual reality based therapy (VRBT) or customized vestibular physical therapy (PT) as an intervention for habituation of dizziness symptoms. Twenty subjects with vestibular disorders received VRBT and 18 received PT. During the VRBT intervention, subjects walked on a treadmill within an immersive virtual grocery store environment, for six sessions approximately one week apart. The PT intervention consisted of gaze stabilization, standing balance and walking exercises individually tailored to each subject. Before, one we

Augmented Reality as an Aid to Behavior Therapy for Anxiety Disorders: A Narrative Review.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders worldwide. These conditions are characterized by excessive anxiety that is difficult to control. In most anxiety disorders, symptoms are triggered by exposure to specific objects or situations. This leads sufferers to avoid such exposures, leading to impaired social and occupational functioning and reduced quality of life. Therapies based on behavioral principles, either alone or in combination with cognitive techniques, are the most effective psychological interventions for anxiety disorders. However, the effectiveness of these ther

Patients perceptions of virtual reality therapy in the management of chronic cancer pain.

The management of chronic cancer pain remains challenging and complex, with the process often involving a variety of pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches. Recent studies have shown virtual reality (VR) therapy to be successful in the management of acute pain. However, it remains unclear whether VR-based applications are effective as an adjunctive therapy for cancer patients with chronic pain. Moreover, there exists a gap in the current research landscape that address patient's perceptions of virtual reality therapy. This qualitative study enrolled patients from a larger ongoing r

Probiotics as an adjunctive therapy in periodontitis treatment-reality or illusion-a clinical perspective.

Periodontitis, a prevalent oral health issue, involves various microorganisms and clinical effects. This review examines probiotics as adjunctive therapy for periodontitis by analyzing forty clinical studies. Findings showed mixed results due to differences in study design, probiotic types, and clinical parameters; however, probiotics improved outcomes in severe cases. Caution is advised when interpreting these results, as longer follow-up periods reveal variability and potential regression in effects.

Electrophysiological correlates of in vivo and virtual reality exposure therapy in spider phobia.

Specific phobia can be treated successfully with exposure therapy. Although exposure therapy has strong effects on self-reported ratings and behavioral avoidance, effects on measures derived from electroencephalography (EEG) are scant and unclear. To fill this gap, spider-phobic individuals received either in-vivo or virtual reality exposure treatment. Patients were tested twice (one week before and after treatment), and control subjects once. In each session, EEG was recorded to spider pictures as well as other positive, negative, and neutral pictures. During EEG recording, participants perfo

Precision Therapy in Acromegaly Caused by Pituitary Tumors: How Close Is It to Reality?

Acromegaly presents with an enigmatic range of symptoms and comorbidities caused by chronic and progressive growth hormone elevations, commonly due to endocrinologic hypersecretion from a pituitary gland tumor. Comprehensive national acromegaly databases have been appearing over the years, allowing for international comparisons of data, although still presenting varying prevalence and incidence rates. Lack of large-scale analysis in geographical and ethnic differences in clinical presentation and management requires further research. Assessment of current and novel predictors of responsiveness

A controlled study of agoraphobia and the independent effect of virtual reality exposure therapy.

OBJECTIVES: Past controlled clinical trials centred on virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) for agoraphobia mostly used multicomponent therapy with success. However, the present paper aimed to evaluate the independent effect of VRET for agoraphobia. METHODS: A controlled study involving 18 agoraphobic participants assigned to two groups: VRET only and VRET with cognitive therapy. Nine specific virtual environments were developed using an affordable game level editor. RESULTS: Questionnaires, behavioural tests and physiological measures indicated a positive effect of VRET.
