BACKGROUND: There is little information on the prevalence of recreational drug use among UK heterosexual men and women, in particular on use of drugs associated with 'chemsex' within gay communities. The aim of this study was to examine among HIV-negative and HIV-positive heterosexual men and women in England: (i) the prevalence of recreational drug use (including use of drugs associated with chemsex), (ii) socio-economic/lifestyle correlates of drug use, and (iii) the association of drug use with sexual behavior measures and mental health symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Common recreational drugs and new psychoactive substances pose challenges to public health. This study investigated the feasibility of merging cases of recreational drug poisoning reported to European poison centres.
METHODS: Four European poison centres (Freiburg, Germany; the Netherlands; Sweden and Switzerland) collaborated in a retrospective, observational study. We collected aggregated data on poisonings with 11 common recreational drugs and case-by-case data on poisonings with new psychoactive substances in 2021 by using anonymized data from electronic case reports.

BACKGROUND: The UK has one of the highest rates of recreational drug use and consequent deaths in Europe. Scotland is the "Drug deaths capital of Europe." Intravenous drug use can result in limb- and life-threatening pathology. This study aimed to characterise limb-related admissions associated with intravenous drug use, outcomes and healthcare expenditure.
METHODS: Retrospective data collection between December 2011 and August 2018. Patients were identified through discharge codes. Admission details were extracted from electronic records and a database compiled. Statistical analyses were per

INTRODUCTION: Misuse of prescription medicines and the harms associated with such use are growing threats across the world. There is currently, however, limited data on the extent of prescription medicine misuse in Singapore and whether this is a current threat in the country.
METHODS: An online survey, limited to 1,000 individuals (aged 21 years and over) who were residents in Singapore, was administered through a survey panel company in September 2015. The survey collected information on participant demographics, and their awareness, self-reported lifetime and past-year misuse of commonly a

INTRODUCTION: Recreational drug use in the nightlife setting carries the risk of many negative consequences, such as violence, injuries, aberrant driving and sexual risk-taking. The aim of this study is to investigate recreational drug use and user characteristics among people visiting licensed premises, for example, nightclubs and bars, by using self-reports and biological markers. Staff of licensed premises will be asked to report drug use observations. Further, by using qualitative data, we will examine the motives, consequences and culture associated with recreational drug use. An addition

BACKGROUND: Recreational drug use (RDU) may result in sexual disinhibition and higher risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. We assessed whether RDU was associated with HIV, syphilis, and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) within the context of multiple sexual partnerships and unprotected sex.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among sexually-active MSM in six Chinese cities (Kunming, Jinan, Changsha, Zhengzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai) in 2012-2013. We interviewed participants regarding RDU and sexual activity a

OBJECTIVES: To describe the historical and current use of recreational drugs by a trial cohort of youth presenting to the emergency department (ED) whilst experiencing acute behavioural disturbance (ABD).
METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of a randomised, controlled trial comparing medication management of ABD in children and adolescents aged nine to 17 years who were deemed to require oral sedative medication.
RESULTS: Recreational drugs were used by 33% of participants any time prior to enrolment (115/348). Cannabis was the most commonly used (87/348, 25%), followed by amphetamines/me

BACKGROUND: Recreational drug use has been identified as a significant risk factor for the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This behavior is particularly prevalent among young men who have sex with men (YMSM). However, limited research has been conducted to investigate the correlation between recreational drug use and HIV incidence within this population.
OBJECTIVE: To examine HIV incidence and explore the association between recreational drug use and HIV incidence among YMSM.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted by a local non-governmental organization (NGO

INTRODUCTION: Clinicians managing patients with acute recreational drug or new psychoactive substance toxicity typically depend on self-reported drug(s) used. This study compares patient self-report (and/or from other sources) to the substance(s) that were subsequently identified in serum.
METHODS: A prospective sample of 1,000 adults presenting to a tertiary care, urban emergency department in London, United Kingdom, with acute recreational drug/new psychoactive substance toxicity was collected from 1 February 2019 to 2 February 2020. A total of 939 appropriate samples underwent qualitative

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) to urinary tract infection, prostatitis, sexually transmitted infection, lifetime sexual partner count, and recreational drug use in a population of men who have sex with men. LUTS in men are a source of considerable morbidity, distress, and medical expense.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, Internet-based survey of urinary quality-of-life outcomes in men who have sex with men. The main outcome was the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), classified as none/mild (IPSS 0-7), moderate/severe (IPSS 8

In humans, associations between germ-cell mutations and hypothetical aetiological factors can be investigated by (1) examining the relationship between the factor of interest and conditions known to be of genetic aetiology; (2) examining the relationship between conditions of unknown aetiology and route of exposure, especially paternal preconceptional exposure. As regards smoking, alcohol and 'recreational' drugs, the first approach has been applied in studies of retinoblastoma, Wilms' tumour and chromosomal anomalies. Only Down's syndrome has received intensive investigation, in relation to m

RATIONALE: The progression of psychostimulant abuse is associated with a shift from recreational to habitual use (R2H-shift). Because this R2H-shift can be modeled using behavioral economics, we developed a novel Behavioral Economic model for the Analysis of Self-administration Time-curve (BEAST) to obtain R2H-shift variable(s). The relationship(s) between R2H-shift variables and drug intake (under normal and/or punishment conditions) is/are unknown. Our goal was to determine if the R2H-shift variable and intake variables obtained during the initial self-administration training phase were rela

BACKGROUND: Both injecting drug use (IDU) and drug use by non-injecting routes only (non-IDU) are recognised internationally as behavioural risk factors for syphilis. In Australia, this association has predominantly been assessed in sexual health services. To generate evidence supporting regular screening and timely symptomatic testing of all at-risk populations, South Australia in 2022 commenced routine collection of drug use information for statutory syphilis surveillance.
METHODS: We analysed reported IDU and non-IDU for all cases of infectious syphilis notified during the period 1 July 20

OBJECTIVE: We investigated syphilis prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) in China, as well as potential risk factors. Our principal hypothesis was that syphilis would be associated with the use of recreational drugs such as methamphetamines.
METHODS: From April to October 2013, we used several methods to recruit MSM in Qingdao, collecting demographic/behavioural information via self-administrated questionnaires. Trained health workers collected blood for the Treponema pallidum particle assay (TPPA) with positives confirmed by a toluidine red unheated serum test. We used an unmatch

BACKGROUND: Existing patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessments that measure the human abuse potential for opioid analgesics have been tested exclusively in experienced recreational opioid users, as required by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance.
METHODS: The goals of the current studies were to modify items from FDA-recommended abuse potential PRO assessments to specify the analgesic benefits versus the euphoric effects of opioids and to ascertain the clarity, understandability, appropriateness, and validity of the modified questions. This was achieved by conducting cognitive deb

BACKGROUND: Recreational and sexual drug use among men who have sex with men may result in increased risk of poor health. The aim of this study was to better understand drug use and harm reduction techniques among Swedish men who have sex with men traveling to Berlin in order to improve the health of this population and inform public health strategies.
METHODS: A qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 15 Swedish men aged 23-44 with experience of drug use were recruited through network sampling. Interviews were conducted in Stockholm and Berlin and analysed using content an

BACKGROUND: Understanding emergency department and healthcare utilisation related to acute recreational drug toxicity (ARDT) generally relies on nationally collated data based on ICD-10 coding. Previous UK studies have shown this poorly captures the true ARDT burden. The aim of this study was to investigate whether this is also the case elsewhere in Europe.
METHODS: The Euro-DEN Plus database was interrogated for all presentations 1st July to 31st December 2015 to the EDs in (i) St Thomas' Hospital, London, UK; (ii) Universitätsspital Basel, Basel, Switzerland; and (iii) Zealand University Ho

Body adornment through tattooing and body piercing and the use of recreational drugs are on the increase, producing a variety of secondary lesions, the etiology of which often remains undetected, as the medical community is not yet aware of the extent of the morbidity of such procedures and practices. Three cases are presented, which underscore the problem and also the role that fine-needle aspiration (FNA) can play in clarifying the etiology of such lesions. Two of these cases were lymphadenopathies, one secondary to tattooing and the other to tongue piercing, while the third was a deep intra

Recreational drugs have large impact on public health and security, and to monitor them is of urgent demand. In the present study, ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction combined with the detection of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was applied to the determination of seven common recreational drugs, including amphetamine, methamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine, 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine, meperidine, methadone and ketamine in 200μL of human whole blood. A series of factors which would affect the extraction efficiency were systematically investigated,
